I have felt a deep connection with the Old Ones ever since I entered the religion of Occultism. Sometimes, when I read the Book of the Key, which tells about how to get to Zin through ur dreams, I see the Night-Gaunts and one time, I seen a creature that resembled a dragon/dinosaur hybrid which could move thru solid objects and breathe fire. My use of the rituals from the Cthulhu Bible is extremely useful. I used the Baleful Rite to place a curse on a girl who was slandering me in terrible ways. She had a red rash for three days and had to miss college for a week.

I think I always knew I was called, I just didn't know what the calling was. When I was maybe eleven or twelve, I was on my way to the beach for vacation with my parents. We stopped on the way in Princeton, NJ to stretch our legs, grab something to eat, and shop a bit. It being and old college town, I was able to wander into a wonderful old book store where I found and bought on itter whim a Lovecraft collection. Nothing elaborate, just a dozen or so of his more popular works.
Later that night when we settled i nat the beach, I sat on the hotel balcony with a view of the water and read...and read...and read. I spent the entire night reading, and the remainder of the vacation.
It was one of my first windows into the darker and more occult side of things, and I never really went back. It was powerful, reading those tales at that young an age - with the ocean crashing so very near. From that point on, things changed in subtle ways. On drives I would see abandoned places or lonely hillocks and feel not a deep dread or fear, but an intense longing. I devoured any tale of great and unseen things in the deeps or in other hidden places from that point on, and a few years later when the internet gave me access to others of like minds and secured my belief that this was not all simply in my head...I knew for certain that I'd been Called.

At the age of eleven I read From Beyond (which I still refer to ) and I realized an interesting thing about the tale.It seemed as though he actually experienced it first hand.Shortly after that I went on a frantic search to read more of the Lovecraft tales. But it wasn't until I read the Pickman's Model that I realized that the stories seemed to become more of a road map then just the normal tales of horror and suspense.
Jump ahead 22 years...
At the age of thirty three and looking back on the childhood I lead, I believe the calling came from that first sentence in From Beyond "Horrible beyond conception" I realized the the importance of what i was reading.

What is 'The Calling' specifically? Is it the religious experience of one's involvement in the mythos; or is it a calling to the religion of the magi's own design?
When I think of the phrase 'The Calling' it communicates a connectedness, now this connection could be to the symbolism, the story, the people involved, or to something completely separate from the mythos, but inspired by it.

For me "The Call" can be expressed through many things.
Mainly it is the word for the force/element/phenomena that drags us towards our path, or the truth and in this case Cthulhuism.
But in truth, i find the story "The Call of Cthulhu" to be very realistic and accurate in describing what the Call is, and how it is experienced. The dreams, artists and the sensitives. Many of them are touched by the call.
But the person narrating the story is also called
And so is the author of the story.
As to actually HEARING the call with ones ears in wake state i can only say:
Terrible faiths are alot.
But this is just my take on it, i know nothing.

I've always had strange dreams and visions. I've had lucid dreams with strange symbols and creatures in it. My NORMAL dreams would be nightmares to "normal people". My first experiance with the old ones happend once when I was attempting astral projection. I didnt see the hypnogogic images that I normaly see.. only blackness.. still.. but somehow pulsing blackness.. then suddenly the blackness opened up, like a lid to a great eye, and I saw a strange eye before me. I decided that it was late and I should go to bed. That night I dreamed that I was some strange Amphibious, dark (mostly black) scaled creature.. never saw more than my hands or feet. But I remember seeing strange symbols, one stuck in particular.. a symbol that looks kind of like an eye. See, the strange thing is.. this movie called Dagon came out, and it turned out that The Esoteric Order of Dagon used the SAME symbol as their religious icon! THAT is how I somehow knew I was called.. MANY years after my experiance with the eye-thing...

I think I've been called. I've always had a strong connection with dreams and intuition, as well as with the element of Water. I remember as a child I used to swim at the beach in the hot New Zealand Summer's. It was always in the roughest and most turbulent parts of the beach, and yet I always felt a total feeling of safety - like I belonged there. I now know that that was my first connection with Cthulhu without even knowing Him. But now I'm older and my delvings into the occult have revealed to me that I am indeed a Child of Cthulhu. Even the name Cthulhu struck me hard when I first read it, setting off bells in my mind - like it was familiar and I knew it well, but I had never heard it before. So yes. I'd say I have been called. And I have answered. I have seen the abysmal beauty of R'lyeh and the tyrannic majesty of Cthulhu during scrying sessions. Yes, I have answered the Call and now I shall strive to restore R'lyeh and its dread Masters to their former glory! Ia!

I'm kinda a mundane kinda fellow. No need for magick and I admit to having been away from the mythos for a while.Things seemed normal but as of reccent I been having these dreams of strange chants and demons coming from the deep.I dunno if it counts a a calling but it felt like something.Even if I am deluded...Would that be considered a calling or is something more unexplainable supposed to occur?Have I been called?I dunno but it bought me back here!

I have been called by the Great Mother of the Sea, Tiamat.
Ever since I discovered her, I knew my half fear half fascination with the sea was her calling me to discover her and remember her name in ritual. The Autumn Equinox is when she was sacrificed by Marduk and became Goddess of our oceans, thus its why the sea holds so much mystery to mankind.
Its said that the sea gives up her treasures only when she wants to, and those that disrespect her laws pay with their life.
The way of the Goddess is her own, and such is the way of the Great Mother Tiamat.

I was what some people were called...born a "natural" witch. Even though i didn't know what i was doing, i used energies to make things happen, and my dreams of past lives, and the fact that i have knowledge on a personal level of the truths of religion is a personal great. I Remember a dream when i was five that there were 13 people standing around a fire with stones with Forms of Runes, but not really runes, they were chanting something that actually sounds like the prounounciations of the likes of "Ia! Ia! Cthulhu F'tagn!" ( i mean the way they pronounced the words, not those words itself), and the symbols if iwanted to i could write them out. I used witches tools and witches spells before i knew they were there, and i even finished the N'acht (A really old spell that had the last words taking out).
Well other than the feelings since i was a child, i have had a fascinations with squids, amphibians, and water, and anything living in water. AND i think i have had several encounters with Cthulhu kin- type. In my dreams they come to me and show me great secrets, like a big cicular tube that was found in Egypt in 1998, but i saw it in '96.
I , to this day, am a natural witch, but my darkness is engulfing me, my hate my anger, and my natural born abilities are fading. Right now i am fighting back the personal darkness to win myself back. For i am a person of water, not of blackness.
If that makes any sense to you, comment back.

I know I have been called in some small part, not to Cthulhu, but to Yog-Sothoth. At times I find my self inexplicably and irresistibly drawn to call out his name, and to draw him into my mortal coil (to be slightly poetic). To offer prayer and praise. As he opens the Gate to me, I open mine to him, because all is one and one is all in Yog-Sothoth.
I've always felt drawn to Yog-Sothoth, but more so now because I have been reading a bit about Siddhartha, and Buddhism, and how all is one in all the universe. In my heart I feel Yog-Sothoth is the radiant Om, as am I, and for that I fell all the more connected and drawn.
Am I Cult of Cthulhu material? I doubt it, but I am your brother.

that's a good question to start with. if you are dissatisfied with life, desire change, and finally take action... then assuredly you are.

That question was actually half rhetorical. No, I do not believe I am Cult of Cthulhu material, I have other, stronger, callings; but I do feel a sort of kinship to you folk. At least for now ;D.

I of course agree with VS. If you have "stronger" callings, follow them. But I'm curious where this sense of kinship comes from, if you believe you're not our kind of material, so to speak.

Does everything have to make sense? I feel kinship because I, too, believe Lovecraft was a prophet, and that his pantheon are quite real.
However, if I am not wanted I will go, if not I will stay. But now this is digressing from the topics point.

you are, of course, welcome to stay. everyone is encouraged to discuss ideas here in a civil, constructive way. even total non-believers.
looked at properly, almost everything does make sense. it's because we lack the tools to grasp meaning out of life's apparent meaninglessness that makes it so.
actually, this is precisely the topic's point. the questions... has one been called? how does one know? what does it mean that all of us are gathered together here, sharing a similar vision? are we not already united in everything but name?

The call of Cthulhu, that wicked undefinable thing that drags us all to this place and to our place in the universe. To define it is impossible but it still works its magic. It is mainly the call that makes Cthulhu come into flesh through his dreams. The call is the dreams of the dread one entering our being. Or so i speculate.

Post by Yevathik on Sept 12, 2008 3:21:21 GMT -6
The call can be obvious, such as a vivid dream of the dread Old One and/or his sunken city, or it can be more subtle, such as a niggling feeling in the pit of your stomach telling you that there is more to this universe than what can plainly be seen, and that feeling is what draws you to the Old Ones, sooner or later.
One thing is always the same. The call starts out faint, and soon after is a roar in your head. Eventually, the roar will be not simply be in your head, it will be you doing the calling to others.
