My favorite Lovecrafts story (if i have to pick one) would be "The Call of Cthulhu", but i havent read half of his work, not even near.
Not that there is THAT much, i should read it, but i dont want to ever be in the situation where there are no lovecraft stories i havent read. Right now, i like that i have an incomplete overview of his work. ;D

Well, only a handful of his childhood writings still exist, so one may never read EVERYTHING he wrote.
I liked the Color from Outer Space, the Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, At the Mountains of Madness, and too many of his minor work and collaborations to list.

The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, though the Silver Key one was a good one. And the follow up.

I have to say "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" is my favorite story written by H.P. Lovecraft. Although if one were wanting to brush up on their Lovecraft i would suggest the following website: dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/index.htmlThey have most, if not all, of H.P.Lovecraft's works, and hey! They're even in alphabetical order. I believe they also contain other writers such as Edgar Allen Poe along with other related information and links. Enjoy. - Latheeb

Mine is definately "The Shadow over Innsmouth"
I remember the first time I read it.
It was positively mind blowing.
...It left such an impact on me at the time
It's just the way Lovecraft describes things in that story.
Could make a person go mad!

In case some of you haven't heard, Guillermo Del Toro is set to direct the At the Mountains of Madness movie.

I didn't even know there was a At the Mountains of Madness movie... Although that's great though, that is a Lovecraft story that deserves a movie adaption. Although all of his stories are great, I don't know how the Hell you could make "The Terrible Old Man" into a movie. haha IA!

no, it's supposed to be a giant blockbuster.
after i heard Del Toro was putting off AtMoM for Hellboy 2, i decided to delay any anticipation or excitement until i had actually seen it with my own eyes. didn't care for Hellboy 1. time will tell...
and one day maybe i'll make a feature film. yep, that will be one hell of a movie!

argghh, my only concern is the masses of idiots that will watch the movie and walk around thinking they're Aleister Crowley or something...and will never even have heard of HP Lovecraft.

At the Mountains of Madness is definitely one of my favorite. Though I love the whole Dream Quest series with the eventual Silver Key ending. Definitely a mind bender. And of course I love all of his works really, he wrote many great stories.
It is questionable whether that At The Mountains Of Madness movie will be good. I do almost wish they'd leave it alone. They tend to ruin a lot of good books/stories when they bring them to film, if not nearly all of them. Lovecraft in particular I find to be quite difficult to translate to film.

there is to be a german adaptation of 'the colour out of space' which is among my top hpl picks. 'the call of cthulhu' stays #1 for me because it is so definitive. best opening paragraph of any horror story i can remember.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Statement of Randolph Carter, The Hound, The Music of Erich Zann, lord there's so many, I'd have to go through my anthologies to name them all, and it'd take up a lot of space. CDW would have to be my current favorite though. Very powerful imagery.

did you know that Vincent Price made a movie about that piece called "Haunted Palace"? I didn't snap, since I got in on the movie after the first ten minutes, but when I heard the name Charles Dexter Ward, my ears perked up! Then I heard all the other character names and it was like "wait a minute! This is a Lovecraft story!!" It's really pretty good but does vary on a few points.

I don't know why, but I still LOVE 'The Music of Erich Zann'. It's so beautifully and vividly written. Always loved 'The Dunwich Horror' too.

yes, The Haunted Palace is a personal favorite of mine. it is based on the HPL novella, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. before watching it, i never thought to see Vincent Price in a Roger Corman film where the name Yog-Sothoth was spoken!
i wish The Haunted Palace had spawned a dozen other such efforts. alas, Price and Corman spent more time on Edgar Allen Poe.

Now, now... Let's not knock Edgar Allen Poe. Were it not for Poe's seminal work; would we have ever had Lovecraft or the finely crafted Mythos that his work spawned...We would even all be here now; were it not for "quote the raven...Never more." I think not...
