Can ownership be a form of identification? How?

Yes. I would say it's more a form of considering.
To use a simple example, look at children fighting over toys. One child wants to play with the toy and the owner of the toy becomes angry because it is "mine". Why do they do this? Because the toy has become a part of their identity.
Adults do the same thing. The reasons tend to get a bit more complex than that but it has a lot to do with pride, suspicion and jealousy.
