I am fond of reading self-help and spirituality books, but I realize I have been neglecting books and efforts of the Work for those books. An 'I' says that as long as I am using those books to improve myself then it is fine. Another 'I' more interested in the Work itself isn't so sure.
I ask the opinions of my brothers and sisters on this point. Is it useful in the sense of Awakening to use what these books give or is it better to just follow the Work as laid out in books like The Fourth Way? Or should I do both? Any help or insight you can give would be appreciated.

I think you should first follow the Work, and then, only after being "Awake enough", read the others.
The reason is that there are soooo many bad books on spirituality (I would say at least 90%) written by charlatans, plagiarists and crooks that you need a strong 4th way background to recognize a valuable book when you find one.
If you already read a lot, then keep this in mind !
For sure, make the 4th way the core of your spirituality, in any case.

Well, to work on yourself requires that you've observed something in yourself that you can work on, something you want to improve. In my opinion, the most important thing to know is what you're working on and why working on it.
If you're working on something in yourself that you've observed from a work point of view, then it's fourth way work. If you're working on something else, if done consciously and with understanding, it's still fourth way work.

If no such connection exists, then it's not the Fourth Way.
