Thorgrim made the following comment in another thread and since it was about the GT, I've created this thread to discuss it separately. It's something I've noticed and wanted to discuss for awhile now.
I appreciate the drive behind this and it's lead to some PR problems for the Cult, especially with social networks.
One problem is that some Cult members are really productive and though some people welcome self-promotion on their social network streams, when a productive cult member publishes everything they produce to such a person's stream, it tends to dominate it and appear as excessive spam.
Imagine if you were ok if someone posted their projects to your wall but then when they do you find that 90% of all the posts on your wall are theirs. So it's important to keep in mind the relative volume of one's productiveness and the volume of the stream itself.
Otherwise, it appears as spam.

I agree whole heartedly with your assesment, lets not be rude about it. We should all use some manners when doing so and not abuse our hosts if we are so lucky to find one. Just a simple link is enough, those with LHP interests will follow it, others will not. I am a firm believer in " you get more flies with honey than vinegar", so lets be good to those who will allow their cyber lands to hold the occasional sign pointing here.

Just a simple link is enough, those with LHP interests will follow it, others will not. I don't think people will follow it just because it labeled LHP. People are interested in what has value to them, personally. When it's CoC related I share what I personally find value in and would post to my stream no matter who wrote it. For example, the last thing directly related to the CoC I posted to my stream was the "Just in Time" article which I really hoped people would read and get something out of it like I did.
So, I think that one of the guidelines for promotion on one's social network stream is to not think of it as promotion at all, but sharing what one finds value in.

Seems like we are boiling this down to semantics now, personally I have a general interest in LHP. Meaning I at least look into most things that identify as such. If someone does not like what our group is putting out, that is fine, no hard feelings. The CoC however is a pretty big umbrella organization for LHP practicioners of a wide variety (I am Thelemic Odian for example), the fact that we ALL do whatever we do in a LHP context is what unites us whether they are Theistic satanists, Sumerian Sorcerors, or dark side Heathen like me. We all unite under Cthulhu as the avatar of change. Cthulhu is tough to swallow for most, not so much because he is a fictional character (men created ALL gods as faces for the timeless cosmic forces), but rather what he represents. He tells us we are living a lie, most occultniks prefer to believe they are one of the "special" one who get it. They shutter to think they have only just begun. I accept this however, Cthulhu as Jormungandr in my paradigm makes perfect sense, and is needed to perform an essential function no matter the mythology this force appears in. So our job is to simply try, in the end people have to walk their own path, many get lost however, and a few signs on the road can only help them.

There are fine lines between self-promotion, spam, advertising, and simply letting people know what you're up to or that you enjoy.
Obviously, don't go overboard. For instance, if one's comments, links, or whatever are dominating a person's Facebook wall, then that's probably too much. However, there's nothing wrong with a weekly reminder. If a certain individual is not at all interested in the LHP, Cthulhu, 4th Way, and similar topics, the recipient will usually do one of three things 1) ignore the bulletins. 2) mention their lack of interest. 3) block you, unfriend you, delete your postings, etc.
