Here's a video on the recent controversy, even though Mitt Romney's religion is old news. Obviously, religion is a hot-button topic in American politics. The following are, I hope, thought provoking questions...
Is Mormonism not Christian enough? Can the people accept a Mormon? If not, then what does that say about America? Is calling Mormonism a cult going too far? Does such a comment resonate with evangelical Republicans, Tea Party, or conservatives? Does it leave the door open for the Cult of Cthulhu in 2016?
And this says pretty much the same thing.

I was discussing this very thing yesterday, people seem to think that the religion of the candidate is not important, but obviously its a hot button subject, because religious belief drives decisions, agendas and are to represent 'the people'. It's not just the credentials of the potential reps, its their religion too. I read a lot of commentary, that stated things like 'he thinks he is a Christian', its the age old debate over which denomination has it right, and represents the better values.
It was mentioned that we'd never see a pagan or satanic candidate in our lifetimes. Why the hell not? Sure it would be a media circus, but no more ridiculous than those we have already. I kicked in the idea of a Lovecraftian Theocracy, and woooo people hear theocracy and go wild! That word 'cult' it burns! And it depends on locale, Christianity is on the books as a cult in Australia. I say bring on Cthulhu! You running for office VS?

Yes, religion matters. And the masses, predictably, will get it wrong time and time again. Instead of looking at a man's actions, they attach way too much importance on with what he identifies. At least, faith is being openly discussed. Discussion brings with it the opportunity for illumination.
If it wasn't for major elections being determined by money, I'd be confident about running for office in the near future. I happen to think I'd make a good Presidential candidate in 2016, but I don't have millions of dollars lying around to get my campaign started. And what are the chances that a guy like me will get the donations needed? Of course, if they pass reforms and get the corrupting influence of corporate and lobbying money out of the system, then at least I'd have a chance.

Mormonism a cult? I guess it depends on how you define a cult. I have to admit that Mormons have some of the best prosthelytizing techniques, and they are very quick to get their temples built out of the ground. I think they announced 2 or 3 being built this year. (Maybe the CoC should start doing the same? Temples to the Old Ones would be badass.) I am honestly not surprised at all that they would attack his religion. Looking back at America's deeply religious roots and taking in the religious paranoia from 9/11, it seems to me that, yes, it is a big factor in politics.

Moronism is the biggest conspiracy taking place in America today.

Oh you mean Mormonism.
In answer to your query, Yes! Mormonism is a cult, in the sense that it is a shared bubble of delusion with a slave mentality that attempts to engulf the neuos-sphere with it's parasitic idiocy in the way that an amoeba surrounds and digests a smaller organism!
Mormonism is more of a cult than the Cult of Cthulhu - at least until this cult makes everyone swear obedience under the threat of infantile punishments and has enough money to buy huge billboards that feature smiling models with capped-teeth and dead eyes looking into the camera and a giant caption that says "We're Mormons!"

To the farthest stretch of the word Cult the mormon's are ! there also racist in there beliefs as said in the book of mormon Alma 3: 6 "And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men."
This same racist approach to people of color was the basis for denying people of African descent from partaking of priesthood blessings, a clear indication of which was their dark skin. According to the church the dark skin was a mark placed upon Cain and his posterity so they would not be killed. (Gen. 4: 15)
The church officially claimed from the pulpit for many, many years that a dark skin identified those who were cursed and could not receive the priesthood. Then, magically, the lord washed it all away by telling Spencer Wooley "It's all good. They're forgiven. Give them the PH."

I understand what frateroculus is saying when he says our Cult is not as Cultish as Mormonism, maybe because we are allowed to practice our mysticism in a way that is unique to ourselves.

Growing up Mormon, I can spot one a mile away. I know their tricks, I know their mannerisms & I can tell when & what Romney is looking for. Venger said it best that he'll do anything for the nomination which he very well could get if Obama can't hold on. My whole family is voting for Romney, but I just don't trust his intentions. I feel it by the look in his eye, which I've seen a million times growing up among them. I can't describe it, but I don't like it.
Also what the hell will he really get done. It's always talk, with these slight changes that make us feel like shits getting done. But the bigger issue of life & the sustainability of the human race just ain't on the menu. He's a politician like all other politicians.
I can tell you from what I've been hearing on the radio, that the Evangelicals will back Romney compared to Obama when it comes down too it.
As for whether Mormonism is a Cult? We'll they do have some secrets that the public wont hear, but those secrets aren't all that important. I mean it's not like the masons or anything. Most shit is public. Their secrets are done in the temple & they pretty much have only to do with personal commitments, like devoting your self to Christ & the Church. Nothing all that fantastic. But I don't know how the word Cult is being used, so I don't know. That would be awesome! What the Occupiers are toying with is ways to get the money out of politics so as to level the playing field for nominees. I might make a thread for just that so I can see what you guys can add. So far it would be way more minimal in terms of advertising. Each would get an equal amount of air time & as for the corporations donations not being available....we'll I don't know how badly that would hurt their chances.
