As most people around here know, I like to challenge myself. Well, my latest surprising and ambitious move is dipping my tentacle into the waters of stand-up comedy.
This video is my first attempt and kind of an intro to what I'm doing. Yeah, I know it's rough and not terribly funny, but give it time. I've read that you don't start getting really good until after your initial 100 performances. That's when a comedian finds his own personal style.

A little dry on the entryway, but other than that, funny for someone just starting out. And I do concur with the statement about religion. That you can justify just about anything with it. I live in the bible belt and I hear, "It's okay! Jesus died for my sins!" on damn near a daily basis! What ever happened to accountability to oneself? But I digress! Certainly an interesting start High Priest. Will continue to watch!

Great try, Lord Satanis. I applaud your efforts. I personally found much of the material disheartening and sexist, but I wish you the best of luck on your new endeavor.

Confirmed sexist and proud of it. If I may borrow a line from one of my favorite films Prince of Darkness. Keep in mind that my stage persona and act (especially in the beginning) will be quite different from the Venger Satanis who leads the Cthulhu Cult.
A little update on my progress. I took my girlfriend, Scarlet Princess, with me to Madison's downtown comedy club for their weekly open mic. Put my name down on the list, but didn't quite make the cut to perform that night. However, I did get to watch the other amateurs which was fun and gave me some much needed learning experience. Next Wednesday I should have a better chance of getting on stage. Also, got a flyer about another open mic comedy venue on Tuesday nights.
Meanwhile, I'll keep working on my material.

I tried stand up a couple years ago for the first time & failed horribly. Its the connecting to the crowed that is of utmost importance. If I had gotten that, I know I could of had it. Interesting experience though.

Interesting experience though. Awake! How many times did you try it? Was there only silence or just no big laughs? Could you determine if the audience was at least entertained? I sometimes don't laugh out loud at a comedian's material, but I still enjoy it.
I've read a few books about stand-up comedy now and the consensus is that if you can easily count how many times you've performed on stage, then it's too early to tell if you can be really successful at it.
If you enjoyed it, why not give it another go?

One guy laughed lol, but the rest, I think were so taken back by my material, that they were more interested in me. I told stories of my past that were so strange to them, that I was more the focus, instead of my jokes. Which would have been good! if I knew to connect with them first. But Its definitely an art. Ill try it again some day now that I know what it feels like to have an audience just stare at you in bewilderment lol. It was pretty nerve whrecking actually, but an experience all the same.

Venger As'Nas Satanis Ipsissimus Cult of Cthulhu This is very exciting, Lord Satanis! Much luck to you! I have been trying to get Jason to do stand-up for years, but I don't think he's interested in it. I'm intriuged to hear how your experiences turn out! I think this is an improvement. Not sure if I'll be doing exactly this set this week, assuming I can perform at an open mic, but it will probably go something like that.

Much better! Mainly what I noticed (and I'm a huge fan of Comedy Central) is that you need next to work on the smoothness of the delivery of the material and you need to kinda smile every so often as though you KNOW the material is a joke and funny. Awake!

I think it's rather extraordinary, nay prophetic, that my first stand-up comedy performance in front of a live audience took place last night on January 11th. For those who have been with me for awhile, you'll hopefully remember that 111 is my number. I associate myself with it and whenever I see it randomly during my daily life, I take it as a sign.
Not that it was anything more than a dozen people sitting in an upstairs Irish pub before a non-stage with a couple speakers and microphone, most cradling acoustic guitars waiting to do their own open mic performance or their significant others... but still, it's a baby step in my progression. There were a few chuckles, but that's it.
I hope that all of you have goals and are reaching towards them. That's what the Left Hand Path is all about.

This was a little like watching a 120 pound muscular dystrophy patient try out for the dallas cowboys. Haha. Yes, well played. Actually did my 2nd live performance at the Comedy Club on State last night in front of about 50 or 60 people. I got some laughs; was less nervous too. Your little dig, cb, reminded me of this video. I hope everyone takes this message to heart because it's so easy to have one's dreams squashed if one allows it to happen.

Gurdjieff referred to laughter as a release of pent up energy, that if not released, could potentially evoke negative reactions to mundane occurrences and become poisonous. This is supported by the medical industry stating that laughter boosts our immune system, relaxes our body, and increases blood flow which helps to prevent heart attacks and other cardiovascular issues.
As you go through the process of The Work and and engage in Self-Remembering, remember to laugh at some of the discoveries of your mundane Self. Find the humor in your false personality as you learn how to release this unnecessary part of your Self. Share in your discoveries with the other students you are Working with so that they, too, can find the humor of your situation and learn with you. Laughing at yourself can be one of the hardest parts of letting go as you progress along the Fourth Way path, but it is well worth the effect.
And to Lord Satanis, as you go through this new endeavor, I advise you to remember the words of Thomas Ligotti, "To my mind, a well-developed sense of humor is the surest indication of a person's humanity, no matter how black and bitter that humor may be."
When the stars are right.

Nice Ligotti quote. Thanks. I agree, as did Anton Szandor LaVey. A sense of humor is vital.
There's a wide spectrum between suck and awesome. All things considered, I'm probably much closer to the suck end. We have to start somewhere.
Even now, I'm taking steps to improve my material and performance (which is why I've been absent for the last couple days) because months from now I want to be less sucky. My goal is to be slightly more awesome than I currently am. This is part of the progression we talk about in the Left Hand Path... in The Work.
Attempting something when you don't know the outcome is a scary proposition. Fear of the unknown stops many human beings in their tracks. Rise above, overcome, conquer! Realize that being terrible is the first step to becoming Godlike.

True. You start to realize how passive the audience actually is & that you can totally take advantage. That one time I was on stage probably cleared up 40% of my fear. Which is a lot now that I think of it.
A crowed is an interesting thing. They don't know what they want at a comedy club. A lot of times they are open to where ever they're taken. Where ever the comic will take them. Its a strange feeling recognizing it too. An open mind is probably never more apparent in a person than when they're at a comedy club. Interesting.
So right. Ive noticed that when Im at my most spiritual, I am more inclined to laugh. As if the emotions are connected; or at least that laughter is a byproduct of said spirituality. Where as when I'm "in the world"(daily bullshit),you almost have to force laughter; or "chose" it as a break(from reality).

It's not every day that people muster enough courage to face their fears. Public speaking is among the top fears that people often share. So, Lord Satanis I commend you for your efforts. It takes a lot of guts to do something like this. If you truly enjoy this I'll stand behind you (not that you really need me to anyway, but just for support) and encourage you to pursue this to it's fullest.
I am sure over time you will develop a style of your own and it will come with a lot more ease. Watch out for the hecklers though, they can be pretty brutal.

That right there is something I can relate to. I've often let the fear of the unknown (as well as my own insecurity) get in between me and what I want to accomplish, especially with romantic relationships.
I'm slowly learning to not worry so much about the "what-could-happens" and focus more on the present at hand and where I want to go with things. I've been such a slave to my own paranoia and it's really disrupted my personal life in many ways. I'm only just beginning to learn to friggin' relax a bit more and take control instead of wasting time worrying over nothing.
Your words and actions are inspiring Lord Satanis and I would do good to listen to you and rise above, over come and conquer.
The Cult of Cthulhu shall never die!

Yes, Cult-related topics influence what I talk about on stage.
Monday night saw my 4th open-mic performance. It went well even though I'm still not as comfortable as I'd like to be. A guy came up to me after the show in order to tell me he enjoyed my act and thought I was funny. Needless to say, I greatly appreciated that unsolicited compliment.
