I heard a lot of shit about that, so I searched for what this mayan prophecy really is...
This is it:
"The first prophecy tells us about the “time without time,” in it it’s said that starting in 1999, the human being has to choose to make a change of attitude and conscience; to open its mind to integrate everything that exists. This will be a period of 20 years (a cycle that according to the Mayans started in 1992 and will end in 2012, a key date for the indefinite transformation), in which humanity will enter a process of great learning and change. They also pronounced that seven years later will start a period of darkness in which will face every individual will be faced with his own behavior. Humanity will enter the great room of mirrors; materialism will be left behind and will give way to liberation from suffering."
I think this make some light on the question.

All,
I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. The Maya Long Count will reset to the 13 Baktun in late 2012 but that is about it. Any changes would probably be symbolic and not a literal "end of the world".

Of course I am not worried, but i think when we change of era like that it often happen things... everything is possible. In fact It never have an end, but you know some people seem to think that human race will continue to live without facing any big problem or cataclysm in the next decades: I don't think so...

i've heard about this whole 2012 faisco. it could go a lot of different directions. yes, the mayans did predict all of this but we must consider this one question....how did they know?

The Mayans had been deeply fascinated by astrology. They charted out the course of our solar system's bodies, and no doubt used this knowledge to predict certain celestial events.

All that seems fairly unrealistic. Im sure its more symbolic. Cthulhu could rise at any shift not just 2012. His time will come im sure of it but i feel this is not his time.

This is one scenario for 12-12-2012, go watch it. AWAKE!!!! Well wouldn't that just totally suck! My mind just refuses to accept the "total destruction" scenario. I think it's going to be more of an evolution of all mankind. And it's well overdue! Awake!

One of the earliest theories I've heard regarding the Mayan calendar 2012 prophecies dealt with the alien "gods" that inspired the Mayan civilization would return to the mayan pensula(sp) in Mexico on that date.
