I think there was a thread like this before. My answer is the same as before: Cthulhu, because his call rings within me above all others.

Equually, i feel close to Cthulhu, Azathoth and Shub Niggurat I have chosen the latter because i had to choose ONE. And because i feel drawn to do so. We are in the cradle of the black goat. So Shub Niggurat

I'm seek to be an avatar of Nyarlathotep.
Master Magician Guru Trickster Messenger of the Old Ones Avatar of Cthulhu The Dark Father Master of the Void
Hence my handle... I know it sounds kinda cocky calling myself Lord Void, but it's a reminder to myself to master Myself and My Void.
To "conquer " the Void within is to "conquer" the Void without.
I've also had many visions of Nyarlathotep in my waking hours while sober too.
The first time was so intense that I freaked the fuck out. But since reading some Carl Jung and the Process of Individuation I've come away with tools to help me work with Him and not totally freak when he shows up unexpectedly.
Now I'm working on trying to have an actual Vocal Conversation with the Dark Father.

Azathoth. I like the way the name rolls off my tongue, it feels natural. Lovecraft jots this name down for the first time in his diary in the year 1919 (hence adding it to the "Grotto of Azathoth - 1919, it will have various meanings). Lovecraft scholars believe it's a fusion of Azazel and Thoth. Azazel loosely translated means 'impudent to God', strengthens against God. Wiki had this to say: The first appearance of the name "Azazel" is in Leviticus 16:8, when God orders the high priest Aaron to "place lots upon the 2 goats, one marked for the Lord and the other marked for Azazel" on the Israelite's Day of Atonement. The goat designated by lot for the Lord is to be used as a sin offering, while the goat designated for Azazel "shall be left standing alive before the Lord, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness to Azazel" (Lev. 16:10). Aaron was to "lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their sins, putting them on the head of the goat; and it shall be sent off to the wilderness by someone designated for the task. Thus the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness" (Lev. 16:21-22). Leviticus also says that "He who set the goat for Azazel free shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may reenter the camp" (16:26). This is the origin of the term scape-goat (see below). According to some scholars, the name Azazel may be derived from azaz meaning strong, rugged, or grandeur/majesty, and el meaning of God or strong, giving either strong one of God or referring to the rugged and rough mountain cliff from which the goat was cast down.[2] Some theories propose that Azazel may have been derived from the Canaanite god 'Asiz, who caused the sun to burn strongly. [2] JewishEncyclopedia.com - AZAZEL Esoteric teachings state that AZAZEL aka ZAZEL, SAMYAZA, SAMYAZAZEL, SHAMGAZ, SHEMYAZA, SHAMYAZA, SHEMIHAZAH, SHAMASH (Babylonian), UTU (Sumerian; The Shining One),* SAMAS (Akkadian), BABBAR (Sumerian), Ashur (Assyrian), SHAMIYAH (Hathra), SEMJAZA * Zodiac Sign: Capricorn/Aquarius (both 1-10 degrees) * Tarot Card: Ace of Swords * Planet: Saturn, the Lunar South Node (Dragon's Tail) * Candle Color: Blue, Black * Metal: Lead * Element of Air * Symbols: The Eagle and the Scorpion; the Faravahar ( * Number: 20 * Rank: Chief Standard Bearer of the Infernal Army Azazel works directly with Satan He is in charge of top security in Hell. I'm a Capricorn, and I find this out later - so voila, I'm diggin' it. Thoth, was considered the heart and tongue of Ra as well as the means by which Ra's will was translated into speech. This calls to me, because I'm often the voice or the interpreter, and speak my views freely. Thoth has played a prominent role in many of the Egyptian myths. Displaying his role as arbitrator, he had overseen the three epic battles between good and evil. All three battles are fundamentally the same and belong to different periods. This also calls to my character. So, if what scholars believe is true, the fusion applies to me quite nicely. Azazel is often depicted in this manner, goat-like with a goat companion. I am the Goat, and this symbolism calls to me. Having the head of an Ibis, and the body of a man. In sumarian mythology, Lilu is the male counter-part to Lilith. A demon of flight, Thoth takes on this role in Egyptian Mythology often depicted as the Alchemist, and scholar. Yeah, that's me. I'm also known as the 'Alchemistress', alchemy being something I'm into philosophically. Close analysis of Azathoth will reveal that it is a winged creature (thoth) and desert dwelling (Azazel). So the scholars may be somewhat correct in their assumption. Lovecraft's central deities are Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth, both representing opposing cosmic principles. Azathoth, the "blind", "idiotic" ruler of the pantheon, occupies the literal center of the universe, whereas Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth's co-ruler, embodies the infinite, existing in all places and in all times. Next in the hierarchy is Shub-Niggurath (whom Lovecraft mentions but never describes in his stories), representing some sort of pagan fertility god. Attending Azathoth at his court are the Other Gods, mysterious beings that dance mindlessly around Azathoth's throne in cadence to the piping of a demonic flute, and Nyarlathotep, the avatar and messenger of Azathoth and the Other Gods. Nyarlathotep is the only being that can interact intelligibly with human beings, though he often manifests himself in human form to disguise his true appearance. The topmost tier of deities is served by terrestrial, non-human beings. Cthulhu is regarded as the priest of the gods, while Dagon appears to be his subordinate. The lowest tier consists of a race of ocean-dwelling humanoids, the Deep Ones, serving Cthulhu and Dagon, and a pair of extraterrestrial races, the Elder Things (along with their slaves, the shoggoths) and the Mi-go. Sad, Yig (father to all serpents) is not an option. So I chose Cthulhu. He is the one who sparked my interest for the darker side of things. I am eternally grateful for that.

I've always resonated well with Nyarlathotep. He never appears to be on any one side except for his own and as a Black Magician I see great value in this quality. He appears to be very interactive with humanity and was said to show men the most terrible of truths, which seems rather Óðinnic to me and thus characteristic of the LHP.

Excuse me, I'm not Northern American, I'm Italian. My english is not perfect.... I chose Dagon, because I have always dreamed to be a sea being. And because maybe his sons live near my town, in the Delta of Po river.... They live there since many centuries, I suppose...

Why do you like Cthulhu so much? When I was a child we (my family and me) used to go to vacations at the beach in Puntarenas. My sister treathened me with some kind of octopus or sea monster and she scared me a lot whith a hole in the sand very deep (to me at seven years) and full of water and sand. Sience then I can not go to the deep water and octopus and squids make me sick. But this Nyarlathotep is very of my liking.

I chose not to pick one over any other. My mind is open to the possibility of all. Shubby holds an attraction because of the fertility thing and is mentioned in many stories and chants but then again so is Nyarlethotep. I like Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth simply because of their power. I also dig Cthulhu and Dagon. Mainly because they are both very strong images physicaly. Theres enough love in me for all gods and creatures of the mythos

i didn't even think of Kort'thsalis as an Old One, but since it's up there... yeah, maybe. why not? a Great Old One that exists primarily as a sigil, a Meta-Sigil at that!
have you ever run, played, or read through Masks of Nyarlathotep for the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game? extraordinary!
fear and the overcoming of such an old and powerful emotion is what the Mythos is all about. i have no fear of octopus or squid, but don't fancy big spiders... even so, i find them fascinating and respect the fact that they make me uneasy.

It was Cthulhu; he who sleeps and dreams, but will awaken soon; that brought us all here...
But, if I was to indentify with another, it would also be Dagon. Shadow Over Innsmouth was my first Lovecraft story; and, I took comfort that Dagon was interesting in the affairs of man; and wished to help us...

I've actually retracted my vote.Originally, I said Cthulhu but that was out of haste and not alot of thought went into it. I've re-voted, and this time for Shub-Niggurath, which should have been my first choice really. With an inborn love and respect of nature and the environment, and a strong and driving libido, I feel that the hermaphroditic Black Goat is a much better-thought-out and truer choice. Ia, Shub-Niggurath! The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young!
