Last night before bed I lit up the day's last cigarette and proceeded to the bathroom. I reached up on top of the bathroom sink grabbed the small ashtray I stole from McDonald's 8 years ago then I sat down on the toilet (I'm not trying to be crude here, you'll see my point soon) place the ashtray on the edge of the sink and began to smoke.
It was then that I realized something. I do this every single night, no matter what. I smoke in the bathroom, use the toilet, then brush my teeth and head to bed. Sometimes I don't even have to use the bathroom and I will still sit in there and smoke. It's a routine, a force of habit, a pre-slumber ritual.
Every morning when I wake up, I grab a change of underwear, light a cigarette, then sit on the toilet and smoke it and then take a shower, get dressed, pack my lunch and then check the internet.
Another mechanical routine; a morning ritual. It really struck me as odd because I could so clearly see the learned mechanical process, the creature of habit behavior.
I've noticed this in other people as well. We have a favorite place to sit at lunch, a particular spot for our things etc. etc. I am sure any of us could come up with a dozen different examples of this behavior.
It just made me wonder; are we that afraid of change that we have to have some ordered sequence to our behaviors? What would happen to some people if they couldn't do these things? If they completely flipped their entire routine?
I believe many people would find it hard to start the day or perhaps not feel quite right throughout the whole day. Others, such as myself, would be able adapt to the change, the "chaos" so to speak.
Through this observation I find that people can be incredibly predictable.
I'd like to hear your observation on this topic, so please if you have some outlook you'd like to share, I'd love to talk about it.
