I just had a quick question i didn't think merited a whole thread, so i thought id make one for any question for him.
~What is the founding date of the coc? I imagine you thought about it for a while before you made, but there would have been one point were you thought, 'yes i will make it' and then later 'sweet I'm the high priest of a cult of cthulhu, kick-ass'.

being part of the Church of Satan and Temple of Set got me close to something important. i had this feeling like i was near an ultimate experience, an otherworldly power... i was passionate about the Left Hand Path, darkness, sexuality, the occult, evolution, and H.P. Lovecraft.
i had also investigated the Esoteric Order of Dagon a little. to me, they were similar to the CoS and ToS; mostly aesthetics, playing the part, very little real world action.
the Cult of Cthulhu wasn't the first occult group i started. there were a couple of others that never got off the ground. one of them, in high school, was called The Blasphemous Dawn. Another, later on, i named The Order of Satan.
back in 2004, there were some new Lovecraftian things coming into being. movies, comics, scholarly books on the Master and his prose... i remember playing the collectible Call of Cthulhu card game feverishly for several months. all those Mythos names, descriptions, and artistic renderings might have been the eventual trigger, hadn't thought about that until now...
but i had been tired of just drifting through life, being obsessed about black magic and such things for an extended period and then putting it aside because i was (almost) always practicing alone. life would invariably get in the way. i didn't have a mentor of any kind, besides the authors of my favorite books: Lovecraft, LaVey, Ligotti, Ouspensky, Phil Hine, and others.
before making it official, i scoured the internet for any group calling themselves the Cult of Cthulhu and found nothing. that seemed very strange to me, "there should be a Cthulhu Cult somewhere. how could there not be? maybe i should create it? is that my destiny?" that's what ran through my mind.
it was late summer of 2004. when i realized there wasn't a good reason not to form a religion based on H.P. Lovecraft's Mythos, i decided to perform a ritual to give this new movement life. i consider that the conception and knew i wanted another ritual to symbolize the birth. roughly about 9 months from August was the most fitting date i could think of, May Eve. that's what i based the first CoC convention around. Cthulhu One consolidated the Cult; it then had a life of its own which could not be stopped.
without knowing the exact night that our Cthulhu Cult became a reality, i sometimes use Lovecraft's birthday, August 20th. so if you want a founding date for the CoC being realized, might as well use 8/20/04. after that, the sweet i'm High Priest honeymoon was incredibly brief because many people came out of the woodwork to either discourage me or outright ridicule my efforts. such is life...

Great post, VS.
Maybe you should write an official "brief history of the Cult" somewhere if you already haven't. It's the 5th anniversary this year after all...

Well, seeing that I was among the riduculies - I would say, it was 'how' you broke on the scene with your new theology. You were kind of a dick. In hindsight, I know it was related to some residual feelings you had from the COS and their ilk - but c'mon VS, self examine. :-)

haha, and you were kind of a bitch.
but hey, it all worked out in the end. actually, i was referring more to the Lovecraft nerds that couldn't bare to see someone usurp their precious man from Providence.
maybe if i had a guidebook to maintaining sanity while becoming High Priest of your own religion, that would have helped smooth the way? ah well, what's done is done...

Not much has changed for the lovecraft nerds. Its not hard to find one (or one-hundred) that doesn't like our ideas.

"Maintaining Sanity While Becoming High Priest Of Your Own Religion" that would be a very odd book, if only it existed, it would be a great conversation topic.

I have an easy question...how and when do we get our magical name?

since anyone can join and call themselves a Cultist, i'm instructing people to choose their own name from the glossary at the end of Liber A:O. could be just a word or a short phrase, totally up to you. or create your own word.

do you still recuire that heralds submit the nine questions document, along with their details?
if not why, and if so do they still require your approval for membership?

for standard membership, which means officially belonging or aligning with the Cult of Cthulhu, no. members do not have to fill out an application nor be approved. however, to be considered an active member who might be thought of as an engaged participant and/or representative of the Cult, then yes. the 9 question application must be answered and approved by me.
as of now, a Herald of the Old Gods is considered an active Cult member and a Messenger of the Outer Angles is considered an official member yet not active. previously, Messengers were not considered actual Cultists but sympathizers; so that has changed. the following webpage has all the updated details:www.cultofcthulhu.net/I-am-the-way-cthulhu1a.htmchanging your screen name on the forum is a good idea; however, you don't need to re-register. you can alter any part of your account information including the username.
