Ninja'd from PP forums, a user there has this written under his avatar...:
F.E.A.R.: False.Evidense.Appearing.Real.
False Evidense Appearing Real
(Dunno just wanted to make the starter thread not be teeny tiny mini small so I did 2 versions of the explanation)
Any other thoughts on what fear is?

hey, thats pretty clever. I see the point, how fear alone, can be used as a tool to control and dominate. But from another view of the word, fear is real and useful. Fear is one of the things that keeps us alive as mammals, it is a natural function. Even predatorial animals feel fear. If we were fearless, we would be ineffective as animals. We are highly instinctually driven. And fear is ONE of those instincts. If we didnt have it, we would have died before we even crawled ashore back in the day. It is a function, and it has a useful purpose. But when i say that, i am of course talking about the sensation/phenomena "fear" in itself, not what we fear today. If those fears are all relevant is subject to discussion, to say the least. ;D

So thank you so much for getting it on the list this fast cuz it's kinda important ;D

That is very clever indeed....its one of the reasons why I am enjoying this message board, so many different points of view from people with open minds willing to share them.
Fear, to me , is used by those in power by creating Taboos about the boundaries that have been made forbidden to cross.
Either you get the masses to obey these boundaries and avoid them like so frighten sheep...or you get those maverick individuals that are made more bold and daring to cross and explore those boundaries.....just because they are forbidden.
Its like the old tale of forbidding a teenager access to something, their daring curiosity makes them want to explore the forbidden.
I see the Occult ,and those who dare practice it, as a border that the authorities put fear in the masses and forbid them to cross.

Fear is the animalistic urge to survive.Lose fear and you may not respond how you ought to in muddy situations.
Fear is also a hindrance that keeps a person distant from their human potential because they hide away and avoid rather than live (I know this all too well)
In the human fear is the thin line seperating two duals. The animal instinct operating within us and the ability of the rational mind to look forward and determine what disadvantageous situations may occur. It seperates and merges the rational and animal mindIt all boils down to survival. It clashes with social rules sometimes but is also responsible for social rules.
It can get one into trouble by causing them to react irrationally but can also save one from trouble by keeping them outta harms way.
Fear is the sword that when gripped too hard slices into the wielders hand!

Fear, if wallowed in, leads to paranoia.. which leads to gnosis.. so it can be your friend.. as long as it doesnt control you, but you control IT.

False Evidence Appearing Real
Any adult who had a fear in childhood, such as the 'man in the closet', 'monster under the bed', or the 'boogey man' - knows exactly what it means to F.E.A.R.
My son was sheltered from any belief in the boogey man, until he was about 7. Then his pip of a father told him the story. From that point on, he slept with the door open, and a light on in the hallway. He wanted an escort down the dark hall to his room (which I always refused). The false evidence, was the story fed to my son. Appearing Real, is the child's imagination and what that can manifest. If a child is not given any basic characteristics, the child creates it.
After about a year or so, and no matter what I told him - the boogey man just disappeared. Just like that. When I asked him, where did it go? He shakes his head, as if embarrassed that he believed in it in the first place. He just stopped believing, and he realized that it was just a figment of his imagination.
Most 'F.E.A.R.' is not for basic survival. We are not talking about the instinct that prevents us from walking off a cliff, or into fire. We are talking about the terror that the mind creates.
I guess I was always an odd kid. I wished monsters were real. I wanted to play with them. I always scared the shit out of my little brother by jumping out of closets with monster masks on - for the sheer thrill of watching his face turn to horror. Who knows, it's probably the reason he wants nothing to do with me - I probably traumatized the poor kid. Weeeeee!
F.E.A.R. lives!

I think you can divide fear into two main sections:
A. Mindless Fear B. Mindful Fear
Mindless Fear is generally negative and will block a person's Will from fully Manifesting. Examples include fear of clowns, fear of mustard, fear of the Unknown, etc. Mindful Fear, however, isn't necessary negative in nature. It is beneficial to be afraid of some things in life and Working with your fears in a directed manner can bring about your Will easier than if you try to stamp it out completely. Examples include fear of being shot in Compton during midnight, fear of running into oncoming traffic, fear of fist fighting a hippo, etc.
I personally see no need to ignore or bind one's own emotions. Whatever positive or negative qualities they hold can be directed and focused through the magician's Will, and they can hold many keys to Knowing your Self if you experience them fully.

Fear is something in you clinging to life.
Have it not an you excepted death on some level long ago.
Species with no fear die fast! Adios! -J
Still I wanna come up with a cool abbreviation...Lets see...
Foreseen End Approaching Real
The less detached from reality, the less fearful I found. When I was into the occult and lost in my thoughts for a period fear was less dominant. When I returned to focusing on real things that can occur and left my common sense of the occult mindset,I knew what true fear was.I think the abbreviation supports my thoughts

I like the notion of mindful fear and mindless fear, i think it is a great way of putting it.
That is also a great way of putting it. Fear is the flesh and the mind, i dont know if it is also in the soul/spirit/higher being.
all is of course relative, for ever.
