Based on a family portrait. I first saw this photograph in the Annotated Lovecraft Vol 1 by ST Joshi. The image was small and and I used to squint at it, tring to figure out--is that HPL as a young boy, cruely dressed up as a little girl? It was. And a darling little princess of a girl at that.

are you saying that HPL drew this? if not, then who did and where did it come from?
i already knew that his mother actually wanted a little girl instead of a boy and did dress him up and fix his hair like a girl's until he was six years old or something...

Apologies for the confusion. I drew this earlier today based on a family photo of HPL and his loving parents.

Holy mother! ;D Thats crazy ;D And fun. Maybe she has been the source of his later sensitivity for madness. EDIT: I got so blown away by the girl thing that i forgot to say thanks for posting the drawing. I like it.

no prob. i kind of guessed that, but was hoping against hope that HPL himself had drawn such a bizarre and monstrous tableau. well done. i really wish i could see into the mind of our religion's first prophet... further than his stories alone would allow us to wander.

Thank you both very kindly. Parental figures very much form a basis of ones perception of divinity. A simple look at most major religions will back this up. Tyler Durton agrees with me on this as well. Syphyliitic and crazy father, mother who dressed him up as a little girl...mommies whole suicide bit. HPL took these influences, and the insanity all around him, and coped with it, in part by crafting a cosmology which has resonance for us all. To me, the old photo of our prophet in a dress really humanizes they old gent. Taken with what we know of his life, this image (the original photo) very much makes him a sympathetic character. Just my two-bits, better that I leave the biographying to other hands! Newer version of same drawing. Niether attempt succeeds entirely, alas. Fuck it, here's another recent scetch. A flower of life design, with eyeballs and degenerating into chaos along its periphery. A simple curruption of typical new-age iconography.

Love the Flower of Chaos design, Gargenstein! [Edit: Okay, I liked the other one too, but I had to comment the Flower because of personal reasons. ]

The new drawing is excellent.
To anyone who read the "Hallucinations" thread...
This kinda looks like the "flower heads underneath the water" or the bi-hive pattern i was talking about. It was the first that sprung to my mind when i beheld the drawing.
Thanks for posting it.

on the contrary, your drawing rules! you should give your artwork a title and pass the image around to other forums, myspace, and HPL related websites. and if you wouldn't mind... mention the Cult of Cthulhu.
