ok, just saw the premier of Dexter last night on Showtime. this is an unbelievably awesome tv program. i'm hooked after just the first episode! already planning on buying the DVD next summer...Dexter is based on the compelling novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay, a South Florida native. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.

Too bad I do'nt have Showtime. That whole blending in with society thing reminds me of "American Psycho". That's a great movie! I have'nt read the book though."Dexter" sounds great. I suppose i'll have to wait till it comes out on DVD.

well... luckily for those who don't have Showtime, you can go to the main website and download/watch the first two episodes for free:
www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.do
also, before season 2 starts coming out on tv, there will most assuredly be a season 1 DVD set. i'm gonna buy that sucker so fast, it'll be insane!
i seriously think this is one of the best tv shows... ever.
go Dexter!

yeah, the season finale was on last night. it was mind blowing.
and now i feel empty inside...
luckily for all of us serial killer fans, Show Time has announced a new season for next year. i guess the program is as sucessful with critics and viewers as it deserves to be. i think it won at least one award for best drama or something.

Gaarrrrggghh! that sucks, guess you'll have to move to the US, Setnacht. ;D
but seriously, it's only a matter of time before the lethargic Germans get Dexter ( i hope ). now if only they had region-free DVD players. maybe that new HD DVD or Blu Rey crap is without regional bullshit. hate to recommend that marketing gimmick though.

Wow, If I had realized this thread was here I would have posted when I first came to this forum! I loooooove Dexter. Serial killers fascinate me and sociopaths fascinate me. I thought this show was a wonderful and well done peek inside ones brain. I had only just finished watching the first season over the summer as I do not have Showtime. I am now watching the second season, but am finding myself a bit dissapointed with last weeks episode as they seem to be having problems (in my perspective) staying "true" to the character. I read that last season they followed the story of Dexter as it was written in the book series BUT! Showtime decided in the second season to no longer look to the book series for this season. I felt a big change come over the show....there is more humour and it seems as if the writers cannot handle the "essence" of a sociopath....they seem to be wanting to "save" him and damn, I dont want Dexter saved. I think he is perfect as he is. Grrrrrrrr.

i know exactly what you mean, Jasmine. Dexter is taking a turn... hopefully not for the worse. the people who write for the show have to make it accessible for a decent-sized audience, and i suppose that means toning Dexter down a little bit... making him a bit more human. not necessarily a bad thing, but it may be cause for concern down the road. let's see how season 2 shakes out.

Dexters back!!!! And better than ever! I was on the verge of walking away from the series and they saved him. No, he saved himself. And the sex scene in last weeks episode was awesome!!! Gonna have to go write fantasies for that one.....oops I wandered. hee hee. No really, I liked your advice Venger.....patience is not my strong suit. It was worth waiting for.....plus the new girlfriend/sponsor.....mmmmmmm.

I just watched episode 7. They are taking the plot forward too quickly I feel. I like his burgeoning relationship with Lila as she is a much more interesting character than Rita as well as there is better on screen chemistry with Dex and Lila. The manifesto is a huge mistake. He did not realize how much info he is giving away by not being on top of his game. I am liking how his sisters character is has grown since the 1st season. I like the Lundy character despite my first inclinations. He is a great foil for Dexter. As far as Dokes is concerned, I think Dexter just made that situation a lot worse. With Dokes off the force he has nothing better to do than make it his lifes effort to fuck Dexter over. Plus he is more dangerous as he has had all police restrains removed. As long as he remained an officer he had to follow the rules as best he can.....now there is nothing holding him back. It should be interesting to see what they do, I have to admit I hope the show can keep its integrity of character intact. We will just have to wait and see!

I feel badly that you had to wait a week between episodes! I was behind and just watched last weeks and this weeks back to back....I dont think I could have handled the wait. I am wondering however, just what the hell they (the writers) are planning for Dokes. I really do not understand why he is being kept alive unless Dexter has managed to "create" irrefutable evidence that Dokes did it. He also will soon have Dokes's best friend after him as well (cannot remember the name of the character). It is wonderful that he is embracing his old darker self as that is the one I love so much! My hubby is certain that Lila must die! She did kill someone....remember? I have to say I am leaning in his direction as well. She already showed a willingness to commit arson quite blithley and I am certain that the person she killed was not on accident as she claims. Which makes her Dexter fodder.....cool. Although I will miss the much hotter sex scenes....but I am old horn dog, what can I say?

Ok, I finally had time to catch up. I watched the last 3 episodes of the season back to back. I felt disappointed with the season finale. I also was disappointed that they were even having Dexter consider turning himself in. I have read a lot in past years about sociopaths and serial killers. One commonality is an inability to express or really feel compassion. They are portraying him incorrectly in my eyes. I feel that they are trying to package the show for mass consumption. It is watering down the beast that rides within. I am losing interest. I like my men with a lot of beast in them....Dexter is looking pretty wimpy to me. I actually did like what they did with the character of Lila. I think she is a more interesting character than Dexter is right now. I was also really relieved that they killed Dokes....his character was really irritating me. I am uncertain how much I will really watch the show if it returns next season. I like the actors in the show....for the most part they have a really stellar cast....just the scripting is really no where near as good as the first season. I wish they had not left the book series behind this season...they lost the "feel, texture and taste" of Dexter for me this season. Oh well. At least I can go back and watch last season over again! ps. I really loved the painting that Lila did of Dex though....I wish they would release a poster version of it...I'd buy it.

I do want that painting...yes I does. It was really cool. I liiiiiked it. Has anyone here read the books yet? I have not and I have heard that they are worth reading....my magical reading list is so long right now, I really don't have time for fiction or I would be on it now!!! Also, Venger, perhaps you have more info on this....How much do you think the writers strike affected this show? I am thinking they were already off the mark at the beginning of the season. I personally think that it was already on its way downhill before the strike happened.
