Going from our earlier (and still ongoing) discussion of "Absolution Calling" by Incubus, I'm posting this as an example to start a related discussion about objective art.
The video is "A Certain Shade of Green" by Incubus. One of the main purposes of the video is to wake he person watching it a little by getting them to realize that they're watching TV.
This is done in several ways:
* pointing out the edges of the screen by using frames within the screen area, and by the lead singer pointing them out, getting you to follow his hands which then leave the frame * odd video effects * shining lights into the camera (at the person watching the video * and my personal favorite: knocking down the spaceman just to get you to wonder what knocked him down (the camera, of course!)

Know that I think about it, the spaceman is like someone with a dominant personality and the naked people are like people with dominant essence. (Personality surrounds essence like the seed around the germ of life in the seed.)
Back when I first got into Incubus I hadn't yet discovered the Fourth Way and thought about it without the Fourth Way language -- the spaceman represnted artificial parts of us, picked up by imitation and the naked people represented people living authenticly true to themselves.
Looking back at it now, the spaceman is an apt Fourth Way metaphor in another way false personality is represented by The Moon in the Ray of Creation.
Does anyone see any other Fourth Way correlations in the video itself?
(I can think of one, but I'll wait to see what you guys think first.)

"Magic Medicine World" she says...
Flashes of Negative Imaging - negative space. Reminds me of your negative space vase and your test on observation.
His song is about signs, what shade of green are you waiting for. He also has hand signs in the video but I don't know what they mean. Claw, Flat raised hand with a finger drawn across it, fist, etc.
Overall, the lyrics are calling for action.

"The Magic Medicine worked!", she said. I seem to be drawing a blank. Do you mean the Rubin vase? He's miming the lyrics. The flat hand with a finger drawn across it is miming a sign. The flat hand is the flat surface of the sign and the finger pointing it illustrates the lyrics : "All signs around say move ahead." His hands are miming a sign with an arrow pointing forward. To an audience clearly sitting in front of the TV instead.

There's a part where he pulls out a fake dred and another where he's standing on the same set (green lights behind him) where he empties his pockets.
This illustrates separating from what's artificial, not really you, not identifying with them anymore.
As Tyler Durden said "You are not your fucking khakis, you're not the contents of your wallet..."
Except in this case he would have said "You are not your funky hairdo, you're not the contents of your pockets..."

The Negative Imaging was in reference to the Rubin vase. It's a matter of refining your attention, or fragmenting it. The flashes of negative images might be a method of de-hypnotizing from the TV slumber. Kind of like static used to snap me out of watching when I was a kid.
I stopped watching TV from 1991 to 2002, and rarely watch it now. Yeah, some jokes and catch phrases are beyond me sometimes but I've gained years of activity and thought. Free thought. I have never had a show I had to see and interestingly if I watch anything now I am bored by the 3rd episode. The best way to disintegrate the connection is to get rid of cable and satellite. You are not 'missing' anything you can't replace with something better in the real world.

I know exactly what you mean about TV, with few exceptions, 'cause only Sith speak in absolutes. Heh. And ...
