A nurse has recorded the most common regrets of the dying ... Bronnie Ware is an Australian nurse who spent several years working in palliative care, caring for patients in the last 12 weeks of their lives. She recorded their dying epiphanies
Here are the top five regrets of the dying, as witnessed by Ware :
1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. ...
2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard. ...
3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings. ...
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. ...
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. ...

I think people get caught up in the grind, droning along for basic survival needs that they forget to live. Thus, they live to work. I admit, I did this for over a decade, until I felt like there was nothing of me left, there was only the job. The type of work I did was all-consuming. It was a 24/7 type of job, so there was very little time for myself. Even vacations were a minor pause, because while I was out, I would still get emails, and phone calls. I've always been ambitions, and with a strong work ethic. This gets you perks, you climb the ladder of 'success' quickly but it always carries a price. No good deed unpunished, right?
I cared for the Elderly when I was a child. Often times, they just needed the company, and minor care of their person. It was often conveyed to me that time slips by so fast, that by the time you realize you are of retirement age, you look back and say to yourself: What the hell did I do? Could have done? Is there time to do more? Do I have the physical capability to do it if I wanted to?
Today, I do my best to work smarter, not harder. I work to live. Money is a necessary element of our daily lives, but it doesn't have to be our Master.
Great post. Thought provoking.

Life is a struggle to survive. Anyone who says they have no regrets is lying to themselves..or everyone else. I concur, excellent post.

These are funny in a way. Looking at the exterior attitude of your everyday, hardworking citizen, then looking at what they actually feel about themselves. It's quite a juxtaposition.
