I finally got around to watching the film. There are a number of references one could use to tie into the paradigm.
Green is the color of Will Yellow is the color of Fear
In order to increase your power of Will you must over-come fear. Much like the Dune reference I used in a previous thread: Fear is the mind-killer, it is the little death.
See: Xanthophobia
www.associatedcontent.com/article/1314801/xanthophobia_fear_of_the_color_yellow.html
It made me think of the Solar Plexis chakra, which sits right above your belly-button. It's considered your power-center, a place for ego, and will. Where the Heart Chakra is green, considered to be your driving force for will, passion, Love.
Juxtaposed, fear in the Solar Plexis would stifle will; which is generated by your emotional center driven by Love.
I've not read the comic, so I'm just guessing here but is it possible that the name Parallax, is derived from paralysis and plexis?
When the ring chooses Hal, it senses something in him (in spite of his apparent nature) which we later find out is his power to overcome his fears (and perhaps his Wit as well). His humanity is then his strongest power. If he were to exceed his own humanity, I don't think he would have been able to defeat Parallax. It was his Love that drove his Will the most, and his ego played a huge roll in his ability to outsmart and out-Will the enemy (in both cases).
The journey of Hal Jordon from the time he receives the ring, until he fully embraces his responsibility is interesting. He doesn't necessarily change, but instead is able to be all that he is when he overcomes his fear. Placing it back in the context of the Chakras, he is able to open his crown.

Just some initial thoughts...

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a big fan of the comics. I threw my theory at him (paralysis+solar plexis = parallax), and he thought I was going beyond what the creator intended, but it is quite possible. He had no knowledge of anything published that explained the name, only that 'yellow' represented fear on the 'emotional spectrum' and Abin Sur explains that 'fear' is intellectual vs. emotional - which is why beings with a higher-intellect suffer the most. All Parallax needs is even a glimmer of fear in the mind, and he can over power and destroy his opponent.
He did tell me the first appearance of this being is in #3, 2004, Yellow.
I did find a Wiki page that goes into a bit of the history of the character and back-story:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax_(comics)
My friend also explains that Hal Jordon descends into madness for a time, and destroys Green Lantern Corps, then dies off for a while and is replaced with a character called Kyle Rayner (see: Vol 3, #48, "Emerald Twillight"). Since the fans never really bought into the idea that Hal Jordon becomes a mad serial killer, they bring him back as a hero.
I did find more on the 'Emotional Spectrum' in use by DC comics: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_spectrum
"The Emotional Spectrum is a fictional concept within the DC Universe, primarily portrayed in Green Lantern titles. Most notably, the colors of the Emotional Spectrum are harnessed as power sources by various fictional organizations wielding power rings."
Color explanations:
" with each color corresponding to a different emotion: rage (red), avarice (orange), fear (yellow), willpower (green), hope (blue), compassion (indigo), and love (violet)."
1. Rage, Red = Root 2. Avarice, Orange = Sacral 3. Fear, Yellow = Solar Plexis 4. Will, Green = Heart 5. Hope, Blue = Throat 6. Compassion, Indigo = Third Eye 7. Love, Violet = Crown (also often represented by white)
There are also the Seven Powers in use by many religions/traditions which borrow from the East such as the Seven Powers of Santeria.
see: www.luckymojo.com/sevenafricanpowers.html
Ironically I watched 'The Believers' last night, which explored Santeria juxtaposed with Bucharia (Palo Mayombe).
The colors also represent the 7 Powers:
By the end of the film The Green Lantern, Sinestro puts on the yellow ring forged by the guardians. The Green Lantern abilities would succumb to the powers of yellow and fear. Sinestro Corps is suggested after the credits roll, to imply a future film may be in the works.
More on Parallax:
"Parallax Main article: Parallax (comics)
Parallax Parallax is the embodiment of fear, born when one of the earliest life forms first felt terror,[23] and is connected to the yellow light of the Emotional Spectrum; it is insect-like in appearance, and the inside of its mouth resembles the Sinestro Corps symbol. In Green Lantern: Rebirth #3, Parallax is described as an entity of living fear that is born at the dawn of sentience itself. Parallax creates fear and paranoia in any civilization it comes across, and threatens to trap the entire universe in a vicious cycle of fear and violence. To prevent this from happening, the Guardians trap Parallax in a comatose state and seal it within the Green Central Power Battery. Its presence within the battery eventually becomes the "yellow impurity" that renders the Green Lantern Corps power rings useless against the color yellow.[26] However it is able to posess Hal Jordan after Coast City is destroyed, and makes him slaughter nearly all the other Corps and Oans. At the conclusion of Green Lantern: Rebirth, Jordan, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Kilowog and Guy Gardner fight Parallax and re-imprison him in the Green Central Power Battery.[27] Following the creature's defeat in Rebirth, an experienced Green Lantern (with effort) can overcome the yellow weakness by recognizing the fear behind it and facing that fear.[28] Parallax was the first of the seven emotional entities to be captured by Krona. When Krona invades Oa with Parallax and the other six entities and had them possess the Guardians, Parallax took over the Green Lantern Corps' central power battery, restoring its impurity and gaining control of the Green Lanterns save for Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, and Ganthet.[29] Parallax was eventually removed from the Green Central Power Battery, and was completely free from Krona's control, after Hal Jordan defeated and killed the rogue Guardian. Parallax is once again at large in the Universe."
**Taken from the Wiki Page on the Emotional Spectrum.
To me, this implies that while you can over-come fear, you can never truly oppress it, imprison it, or eliminate it; due to our intellectual nature. It will always be out there running rampant in the Universe.
If you think of any instance when you have ever been afraid, in the moment of fear - it is paralyzing...unless of course you are aware you are experiencing fear at that moment and can overcome it with the power of Will. In order to increase the maximum effectiveness of Will, you must drive your Will. Taking care with all of the power-centers.
