Thought I would post the first part of a book that I am working on and would love some feedback.
Something in the Water
Time: Sometime during the Jurassic Era
Place: South Carolina
Three tons of cold rock hurtle towards earth from a distant point in space. The meteor gains
speed as it enters Earth's atmosphere and starts to burn. The fiery tail trails a mile behind the
object and, as it burns, it shrinks in diameter and mass. It slams into the primordial forest and
slides on impact. Eventually, it comes to a stop with billowing steam from the contact with the
cooler forest floor. A natural spring, unearthed from the impact, starts to cool the rock causing it
to contract and split open. Green liquid matter oozes from the meteor and it mixes with the spring water.
Chapter 2
Time: Present
Place: South Carolina
As Sue Minson spooned sugar into the tepid coffee, she gazed out the window towards the front lawn. Fleecy white clouds cast spotted shadows on the freshly manicured lawn. A late afternoon breeze carried the sweet smell of magnolias and Sue fell in love for the nine-millionth time with her husband George for bringing her here. South Carolina was a dream come true.
Sue brought the cup slowly to her lips, hesitant to move. She had become very lazy in the summer heat. But, it was still a welcome relief from the paranoia that big city life brings. She was worried today, though, about George's increasingly erratic behavior. Since he first took the position offered by the local university in the Biological Research Department, he had had the type of punctuality that she could have set her watch by. Nine a.m. to five p.m. on the dot.
But, for the past week, the department had shifted him to night hours only. Now he slpt around the clock during the day often till sunset and let without returning till four or five in the morning. As a result, they hardly saw one another for any length of time. Within a ew days, though, she had adjusted to the new routine. This was not say that she was happy about it.
She watched the sun dip slowly down the horizon and rose to wake her husband for work. She touched his arm and suddenly realized how cool his flesh was. She also realized how gaunt he had become lately. He was working himself into anorexia.
It wasn't worth the toll it was taking on him. The research on the strnage spring they had found on their property last month was tearing their once stable marriage apart. Sue didn't care anymore what was in the water. She had tried it once, but it had possessed such a rank odor and a strange taste that she had been forced to buy bottled water from that point on. But George was obsessed with endless chemical tests and analysis. he had never been the type of person to leave any loose ends.
