anyone else a fan? haven't played with a group in some months, so i just joined an online poker site where you can play for fun. wow, this already sounds like an advertisement...
so if anyone likes to play poker or even just watch (such as the World Poker Tour), then feel free to post in this thread.

i played Scrabble for the first time a couple months ago. even though i love words and language, i found it difficult, boring, and tedious. haha. yeah, not a big Scrabble fan.
poker's pretty easy once you get started. many different poker games, but Texas Holdem is the most popular. probably the most enjoyable 2 hour lesson would be to watch the movie Rounders with Matt Damon and Edward Norton. great movie and that's all they play.

Hey, Scrabble is as fun as the friends you're playing with! My mom and I declared ourselves scrabblomancers and our games are a bit over the top... Doesn't it get repetitive? (hehe I know, I know, it has to have a plot too! ... well.... unless it's porn! ) Ok I'm in a silly mood today!

Brother Satanis,
I am also a fan of poker, texas hold'em is also my game of choice. Haha! I have actually been looking to play some more serious games, I'd say I'm pretty well versed in the art of cards in general. I also play Magic the Gathering (well, haven't in a long time, but I used to and I still have the cards, THAT MEANS I STILL PLAY!!!! hahahaha)
Anyway, I could find a program we could download to play poker in a private room and we can have webcam's or microphones or just text chat and have a few good games of poker if enough people are interested. What do you think would be a good size group?

An excellent idea. I'm interested in pursuing poker (again) as not only an entertaining pastime, but a way to make additional money while stretching the capabilities of my mind. In fact, I just played about 5 hours at a local casino a few days ago. Played well, got a bit unlucky in a couple spots and ended up breaking even.
How about playing for free at Pokerstars or FullTilt? If you guys have a decent playing style, win rate, or strategic tactics for certain players/styles/limits, then please post them here.

Since 2004 on and off ever since I discovered WSOP on cable, Most of the people I played against sucked, as in I was the one mainly winning all the time. I really didn't get into it fully until August this year when I moved cities. Due to me living at a backpabcker at the moment, I get to play poker with all nationalities. Americans tend to play really professional and the other nationalites tend to play loser. At one point someone will go the American wants to play agian and we fellow backpackers in our heads going their goes our cash. I did get that bastard good though.
My poker tip is to try and catch those who have got nature luck and try and knock them out early. They are tricky bastards to beat. In saying that all poker players have certain style of poker players they hate going up against and certain card combinations and peole going in with a flush draw with low kickers agianist another flush draw are stupid!!! I have won so much off them and sometimes even knocked them out. Sometimes it is all about the kicker.
I rather play for a small cash game than free as it makes people play better and online free games you haven't got any incentive, so eveyone is going all in on nothing all the bloody time.

When soneone says they are good at poker, I tend not to beleif them until I play them.
Poker is one of those games where every one thinks they are good at, but they are not. I'm sure people have had those experinces when someone proves they not as good as they are time and time agian so when you come across a really good poker player you are screaming inside YES YES YES as good poker player are few and far between .
I have no idea how good I am as a poker player due to the fact I won''t even consider myself a good poker player until I win at least one professional tournament.

Indeed, the same can be said for The Great Work. Everyone, before they get deeply involved with the CoC, believes they are good... that they are already Awake. Of course, this is very far from the truth. Similarly, when I come across a really good student, I am screaming inside YES YES YES because really good students of The Work are few and far between.
Have you guys read any poker books... books about tilt, proper mindset, professional habits, strategy, advanced play, tournaments, cash games, etc.? If so, what did you think? I have a small library of Holdem books and magazines. Will be pouring over those soon since I aim to play more and improve my game.

As you progress as a poker player it is a lot like playing chess or tic tac toe.
Once everyone is at a certain stage it is very hard to move forward to the the next skill level at times.
eg, Chess can be quite predictable and so can tic tac toe and so can poker as it leads to a long game of stalemate and trying to out fox the opponent. I hope I'm making sense. Once you get to a certain stage to me its all about trial and error and reading body language and learning what type of player you opponent is, eg, calling station, lose, tight aggressive etc and keeping a look for the people who play certain cards in the hands if they are one of the first to call, in the middle of the pack calling or late callers.
Personally I use the poker books as a rough guide what to do and and to learn what everyone else is doing or up to. A secret of poker is there are those out there who play by the book and I mean literally playing how the book tells them to, you can spot them a mile away.

ps:-"Everyone, before they get deeply involved with the CoC, believes they are good... that they are already Awake."
I totally agree with you as I'm at that stage right now.

This week has been the best week of poker in my entire life, the hands were just beeping crazy all week long!!!
I was heads up against a fellow female backpacker and I had pocket 9s and on the flop was 8-8-8....WOW...I knew I could win big if I conned her right....so I went to her normally in a situation like this I go all in as any one can get a square(four of a kind) or aim for a full house, so i went all in 14000 in chips and she followed suit, which left her with one 500 chip left....I won that hand and the next hand she had to go all in with her 500 chip I had a K-6 and flopped a 6 and hit another 6 on the river.
I also managed to knock another player out this week in a heads up using the going all in on a full house and picking up the remainder of their chips the next hand.
I got knocked out in a three way battle today, I went all in on 6-6-6 then two other players went all in...second player had 4-4-4 and the other player had 9-9-9...I was not happy getting knocked being one of the first two knocked out.
Saw my first royal flush on the tables this week and I really hate going up against four of a kinds especially when two of those are pocketed pairs....very hard to play against.

All the time I have spent playing online poker via facebook has helped me be a better player poker as I have now played thousands of hands of poker via facebook poker and in turn have realised the patterns of the pre flop patterns and flops turn and river cards out and ins and how people bet and in turn have the discipline to fold if I have pocket pairs or triples as I know 90% of the time I will not win on them.
I am playing small cash games at the moment at the backpackers and I have learnt if you play it safe you want get where you want to in life and sometimes you as the individual need to shake things up and do something random which is liken top the withdrawal techniques and not doings that I have been taught on my path.
Therefore I have learnt that sometimes you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone and just risk it all to gain a lot.
Without pain there is no gain. Without certain risks you want gain much and just treading water and need to find a way to break the deadlock to full fill what you want aka if you are surrounded my poker players with the same skill level as you the game of poker drags on and on and on.
I hope I am making sense.

ps:- I am trying to bet this annoying Brazillain guy at the backpackers at the moment as he really know how to bluff and cover his arse while doing it which makes beating him the toughest challenge in my whole playing poker life!! I have a lot of respect for him as it is very rare for someone to get me wound up playing poker and in turn he is making me a better poker player as I have to go out of comfort zone and try new playing styles to better him.
The Brazillain players I am playing with at the moment is the best poker players I have played with ever as they have the proven experience and discipline!!! So it is fucking hard most of the time to beat all three of them.
C'mon me up against 3 really good Brazillain poker players in cash games is beeping ruthless!!!! But I am having the best poker experience of my life so far.
And yeah you need to play lots (thousands) of hands of poker to be really good as I have discovered in the last few months and I aint kidding about you need to play thousands of hands to be good at poker!!!!

I officially am starting to take records of all poker tournaments and cash games I enter and my progress and lack of progress and reasons why and the biggest lesson I have learnt so far is betting all in that a person hasn't got a possible straight is not a good idea for me as it gets me kicked out 80% of the time.

One of the best advice/statements about poker I ever encountered was that one has to learn poker and unlearn how to play poker to be better at poker.
I am applying this by playing the rubbish hands like 7-4, 8-2, 10-8 and aiming lower in my pairs and realizing I shouldn't;t assume my opponents is always carrying the best combination of cards and I shouldn't try to be the best poker player at the table, my only good is enough to knock out most people, something I picked up from Andre Agassis' autobiography Open.
And going on a tangent, while reading Open, I related it to the process of crystallization, melting and recrystallizing process that VS and the COC via 4th way teaches.
So I also relate the what I am trying to do with my poker playing as a way of that process which I am using as a gauge (via clues and stuff I have figured out while relating it to poker, cooking and other stuff I use to focus on to better myself) to crystallize, melt and recrystallize myself.
I am in the beginning stages of this process, so My head is a bit muddled right now, so I am hoping you get the general jist of my post.

I agree that ABC poker, playing strictly by the book, isn't always the correct choice. So much of it depends on your opponents.
Obviously, no one plays Texas Hold'em (or similar game) in a vacuum. We play against others. Therefore, we should take our opponents into account when making decisions. What is he thinking? What does he want you to do? Figure that out and then do the opposite. Hold'em is just as adversarial as chess.
Focus on Crystallization first. Until you have that, there's no reason to worry about shattering, melting, or re-Crystallizing.

Venger As'Nas Satanis you may be interested in the career of Amarillo Slim as he is quite a high ranking poker player and I recommend reading some of the books he has written. www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/sim-explorer/explore-items/-/0060817550/0amarilloslim.org/default.aspxI myself have never played poker but I enjoy reading about the exploits of the professional players and the poker tournaments they have taken part in. Slim's book Play Poker to Win is really good and I have read it at least three or four times over the years.
