Hello all,
I'm seeking advice. The situation is that I cannot spend much time running or walking due to a hurt ankle. I am in the process of reworking it back to its normal state. If I use it to much, I'll rehurt it.
So, what I'd like is a few suggestions as to upper body excercises I could do that will burn allot of calories. I'm interested in losing weight more than I am in gaining muscle, and i don't want to spend money on equiptment.
Thanks in advance.

Any exercise using large groups of muscles cooperatively will burn 'a lot of calories'. I like to use Trunk Rotations as they have a pretty intense effect.

Do you have any equipment at the moment? My answer will depend on what exactly you have available.

I know what it means to have something injured. I tore my tricep in half and had surgery that took up to 5 months before I could workout again. You don't want to hurt or re-injure your ankle, that's for sure. Like Master Satanis stated it would help to state what kind of equipment you have. There's a ton of stuff that you could do if you don't have anything available, like dynamic tension. I walk/ ride stationary bike/ run on trampoline, everyday I'm doing some kind of cardio. You'd be amazed at what you can do without any equipment. Let us know. Awake! Ia Ia Cthulhu fhtagn

Thanks Venger, Beast and Alba.
I use the treadmill everyday, but it's not enough to burn many calories. I am simply slowly getting my foot back to normal. I shouldn't use it to walk or run for any extended period of time. A while back, I fucked up and already rehurt the damn foot, so now I'm taking it super slow but still excercising it a little every day and slowly increasing my time a bit every week.
Other equiptment: Well, I may have a dumbell lying around, and I am willing to improvise and use things like jugs of water etc.
My primary interest is in a workout that doesn't involve using my ankles.

Hey beast, Looked at the trunk rotations. Looks great. I'll begin tonight startign w/ 3 sets of eight. I guess doing them every other day would be best.

You're welcome! Anything you can do to get your heart rate up and sweat. Alot of stuff you can do with a dumbbell or jugs of water. Diet is important too especially since you can't do normal cardio stuff. Cut out sweets and carbs to a low, drink a lot of water and maybe try fasting for a day.
Try fasting for half a day and see how it goes. Try laying on your back and use your legs like you're peddling or running, sounds silly but trust me i have done it lol.
I broke my foot on the side and couldn't do anything for cardio for almost 2 months. Improvise, sweat, diet. It is possible. Good luck!

Then I would start with a few seated (or otherwise supported) exercises involving the dumbbell, and then graduate to similar standing exercises as your ankle improves.
What comes to mind: front raise, lateral raise, overhead press, curls, triceps extension or kickback, bent over row, weighted crunches (along with a dozen different exercises for abs), dumbbell bench press (lying on your back, even if you only have a single dumbbell) or simple push ups.
If it's not too strenuous, try squats and deadlifts with just your body weight. Have a sturdy bar you can grip? Do pull ups. A beginner and intermediate trainer can get a great workout without a gym or lots of equipment.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Alba and Venger,
Great advice, thanks very much.
Alba: I believe my first couple fasts will be half a day fasts and then, if those go ok, I'll do a day long fast... Eating is probably key for me now. I can easily cut down on the sugar. Carbs, those will be harder to cut, but I can certainly do it. I believe you are talking about bicycles, and actually, I've already started doing that. I imagine I could easily find a good playlist on youtube or listen to podcasts and listen while I do biciles and crunches.
Venger: Thanks. some of those excercises, I'll have to search, but that's ok. I don't have a bar, but how expensive could one be? I think I'll start w/ Alba's route and then work up to yours as my foot heals.
You guys are great. We'll be the fittest cult on the planet! :-D

Also the fasting is good to switch up the boredom sometimes or a cheap yoga video at Wal-mart or where ever is also great for doing something different. Ever tried Yoga? Holding a pose for a period of time? Sounds wimpy but you get a great workout and you'll be crazy sore for days lol. Changing things is a must. I been working out for 21 years, I started when I was 19, and there has been plenty of times that I had to switch routines around, just so I wouldn't go insane lol. Let us know how it goes! Awake!
