Just a thought, I'm more than half way thru The Power of Now and something dawned on me. The Power of Now could help addicts of every kind to overcome addictions, since most of them live in the past and/or future.
Once a addict always an addict, right? No, if they were living in the now they would be free of the addiction. The more they live in the past then they'll always be an addict.
But then thats what the world wants, wants people to be some kind of addict, keep them enslaved. At least we know how to be free!

Honest introspection and self-empowerment are the key to breaking an addiction that's primarily psychological. The Power of Now could definitely be used to help people recover from any sort of compulsive behavior, from OCD hand-washing to bulimia to heroin addiction. It probably shouldn't be used alone; underlying medical problems need to be addressed, family and friends need to show their support, etc. But it certainly can't hurt.
Speaking of what can hurt, AA and other 12 Step Programs are actually counter-productive (which would explain AA's 95% fail rate.) They teach people to adopt a sense of learned helplessness (Step 1: admit you are powerless) and label themselves with the problem, thus identifying with it ("I'm an alcoholic"). For a person who needs to get his life in order, this is the exact opposite of what he needs to do.

Awake Yeah I was reading the Power of Now, and its so powerful I was like this could help someone with a addiction problem of any kind. People can go to rehab, but also when people find religion, and/or God they can quit the addiction cold turkey. I'm glad I'm not alone in this. Cool to see the replies. Awake! Ia Ia Cthulhu fhtagn
