Has anyone here read the 13 Gates of the Necronomicon by Donald Tyson?? I am a fan of Tyson's work in this area, but it is becoming troubling that Llewellyn and Tyson have begun to make an industry out of applying the Lovecraft Mythos to existing occult systems. It is like seeing yet another Tarot card set done using the symbolism of Native American/ gothic/ Parker Brothers Games... when does it go from being a new perspective on a spiritual pathway to being just another gimmick?
Tyson's "Necronomicon" was a great fictional tale and added to the over-all Mythos. "Alhazred" expanded on his "Necronomicon", fleshing out the Mad Arab. "Grimoire" provides a colorful and workable occult system, but workable only because it relates directly to other basic occult systems. They did their own Tarot, and now they are putting their own spin on the Zodiac through "13 Gates". I haven't read it yet as it is due to be released next month. As a collector, I will purchase it just to complete the set. As a student of the occult, it will be one of those 'asides' I occasionally indulge in for entertainment.
I am looking forward to Tyson's future releases; "Yoga of the Necronomicon", "Necronomicon Feng Shui", and "Necronomicon Witchcraft for Teens" (co-written by Silver Ravenwolf). Down the road, Llewellyn might even branch off into "Necronomicon Auto Repair" or "Cooking with Cthulhu".
I like the guy's work. I just don't take it too seriously.

Apparently, me and Tyson had a similar idea because I created a book around the Shining Trapezohedron, the Haunter of the Dark, and Shub-Niggurath. Not to mention a couple rituals for Yog-Sothoth and Tawil At'Umr. This book was created by me around five to seven years ago. It is being sold on Sacred-Magick.com in their necronomicon section and the book is called "Liber Trapezohedron". It has thirteen steps in just like the new book has. One step on the path for each of the signs of the American zodiac and also one step for the Master of the path. I updated the "Bloody Mary" Mirror Ritual to where it is similar to "The Enchantment of the Glass" in the Yellow Edition of the Necronomicon by Dr. John Dee so it now works too.

I am getting the book myself.. screen out the BS it may contain, and use what works.. Tyson has some interesting stuff, but he may be pressured by the Llewellyn company to make the entities more relateable. Or maybe Llewellyn (like Disney) is trying to move a little AWAY from their fuzzy side, and show a LITTLE bit of dark as their audiance matures. I say the best way to relate to them, the Ancient Old Ones, is to meditate on them yourself, instead of going by what others say, but who know.. the book MAY be useful. I will give a review of it ASAP.. should be arriving any day now..

Ok.. I just got it.. it's not that bad actually. If ANYTHING, it makes a good Lovecraftian Encyclopidia.
It is a book on Gatewalking (surprise). It goes over the 13 Zodiac Signs, adding Ophiuchus like it USED to be when there were 13 months. Two stars in each constelation in the sky are the "physical" location/marker of the direction of the gate. During that zodiac's period is suppost to be when that gate can be accessed. It goes through the method of Gatewalking, and even shows an illustration of how the physical keys used as a ritual object, if you chose to make one, should look, or at least how you might want to visualize it looking.
It debates on the Real/Unrealness of the Necronomicon, and the Old Ones in general.. and basically settles with how it is BOTH... as it is NOT physical BUT Astral due to all of the mental energy people direct towards it. It is unknowable, and not understood if it existed before Lovecraft or not. What it settles down to is that the Necronomicon, LIKE the Book of Dzyan of Theosophist Madame Blavatsky, is actually ASTRAL in existance, and any physical form is only a PART of the massive source of forbidden knowlege.
The Gates themselves are divided into the Cardinal Directions. The zodiacs are used because that is when the sun is suppost to be aligned with the "physical" location of the gate within the constellation of the Stars.
The Necronomicon, to make it easier to understand instead of trying to read an astral book, is to be envisioned as a walled Arab city. Each part of the city is like a different area of knowlege of the Necronomicon book. Utilizing the structure may aid in recovering lost or known knowlege of the Mythos. Using the proper gate will help narrow it down to the topic you wish to know.
The Eastern Gates focus on the "persons" of the Mythos. The 1st-4th are under this catagory.
The First Gate Governs over knowlege of The Great Races. That chapter tells alot of Info about the Arachnid race, Ancient Ones, the Elder Race, etc. It is represented by Sagittarius (Dec 18-Jan20 by the 13 month system). The sun is within that constellation's zone during that time, and the gate is suppost to be located between the stars Pelagus and Al Nasl, which are IN the Sagittarius constelation.
The Second, which goes over the Unique Personalities, or people, mentioned in the mythos or involved with Lovecraft or the Mythos (Abdual Alhazred, Afrasiab, Randolph Carter, John Dee, Harry Houdini, etc.) Capricornus is the 2s gate's sign. The location of the gate in the constelation is between the stars Deneb Algedi and Dabih. Jan20-Feb17
The 3rd is GODS AND DEVILS of the Mythos (Cthulhu, Chaugnar Faugn, Dagon, Lilith, etc.) Aquarius is where the 3rd gate is located, stars making the pillars of the gate are Skat and Sadalmelik. Feb 17-March12
4th is MONSTERS. Goes over stuff like bog-wraiths, ghouls, gugs, etc. Pices is the Zodiac, Al Rischa and Alpherg the stars marking the gates location. March12-Apr18
The Southern Gates (5th-8th) Deal with PLACES of the Mythos in the Necronomicon. 5th= Human Habitations (Mu, Nath, Martense Mansion, Miskatonic University, Lemuria, Innsmouth, etc.) Under the sign of Aries. Beta Ari and Hamal are the gates. Apr18-May14
6th=Alien Dwellings (Leng, Grh-yan, R'lyeh, etc) Taurus. El Nath and Aldebaran. May14-June21
7th=Dreamlands (Cathuria, Aran, Great Abyss, Kadath, The Tower of Koth, etc.) Gemini. Pollux and Castor. June21-July20
8th=Other Worlds (Kynarth, Shaggai, Yaddith, etc) Cancer. Acubens and Al Tarf. July20-Aug10
Western Gates, things and objects in the Necronomicon.. which, as you may have guessed, is implyed to be the source of the Mythos by now. 9th-12th Gate.
9th=Books. (Book of Eibon, Book of Thoth, De Vermis Mysteriis, and of COURSE the Necronomicon) Leo. Zosma and Regulus. Aug 10-Sept 16
10th=Talismans (Elder Seal, Elder Sign, Sign of Doom, Sign of Koth, Standing Stones, Grey Eagle's Charm, etc.) Virgo. Syrma and Spica. Sept 16- Oct 31.
11th=Oddities (Aether, Akurion, Avatars, Essential Salts, Powder of Ibn Ghazi, etc.) Libra. Zubenelschemali and Zubenelgenubi. Oct 31-Nov 22.
12th=Abominations (Abyss, Black Fever, Black Throne, Black Mass, Brown Jenkin, Hounds of Argos, Howler, Soul Bottles, Yazidis, etc. Scorpius. Nov 22-Nov29.
The Northern Gates section, Sorceries, contains the 13th Gate alone. 13 Gate= Rites and Incantations. (Aklo, Candlemass, Dho Formula, Haloween, Long Chant, etc.) Ophiuchus, the "forgotten" zodiac, is over the 13th gate. Nov29-Dec18.
The rest of the book lists all of the Mythos works of Lovecraft, and gives a summary of each of his stories.
I think is worth having, even for just all of the referance material it contains. You may or may not learn a thing from it, but it is an interesting read. It makes some connections between known historical with Lovecraftian-History (I was surprised on the Hudini-Lovecraft corispondances!) If someone wanted to know WHAT the Mythos is, it tells a little about everything. I know it will come in handy in the future when my child on the way is old enough to start learning about such stuff. And I am eager to attempt the Gatewalking as instructed!
AWAKE!

Regarding the "13 Gates of the Necronomicon", if you read Tyson's articles regarding Azathoth, Nyarlathotep, and Shub-Niggurath, he draws some very interesting ideas correlating them to the upper three sephira of the qabbalah. In total, Tyson's work is about 50/50 for LHP usefulness, but I did like the encyclopedic nature of this volume.
In other Necronomicon news, I found the greatest video ever. Click here to see it. [glow=red,2,300]Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn![/glow]
