This is sweet! Is there anyway to make a little doe having a permanent museum set up for Lovecraft? I might have some cash in ten years. Say I bought a house in Rode Island, turned it in to a HPL museum & filled it with memorabilia from around the world(Art,statues,comics,T-shirts,etc). What would be some of the hard parts of putting it together? And could it make money?
Id think a lot of artists would be pleased to hand over their art. It would give them more exposure. But if not, we could simply buy it.
As for tourism, well the big Apple isn't to far away. Actually its about 100 miles away, so that sucks. Do museums get a little discount or tax exemption on land? Or would it just be easier to claim it as a "house of worship" for the Cult to get those benefits?
Also why not make it a bit theatrical to draw more attention. The curator where's a robe or dresses in an investigators out fit from back then, Ominous lighting, etc. Maybe have some local LARPers do a show once a month. What do you all think?

I'm not sure how well a museum dedicated only to Lovecraft and the Mythos would fair, strictly speaking of the means to generate enough revenue to keep itself sustained. I would think that something else would need to be introduced with a bit more public demand or interest, perhaps something like a comic/game shop.
The game shop could be a front for the Lovecraft museum which could also generate a small percentage of the revenue with a ticket price for a tour of the museum.
Of course this is merely my speculation. I know that I would definitely pay visit (or make a "pilgrimage") to the museum should one exist in New England.

I agree, Ill elaborate. Here's a way I see it being the most effective in bringing the masses to Cthulhu. And its not as much about money, even though that would help.
Stage #1 A big, old house on the edge of town(If an average house on the block goes for 50G's in Rhode Island. What could we get for 200G's). Get a two or three story house & tear out the floors in back to make a high ceiling chapel. Or if it has a big, barn; convert it into a chapel & connect it to the house. This could take a long time, maybe a year or two depending on the financing. Hell, my brothers & I could do most of it in 3 months, let alone if we had assistance. Other wise elicit help from what ever maniacs or charitable types we could get. The building & slight remodeling is done!
Stage #2 Call & invite EVERYONE from around the WORLD to fill it with items & lend their talents in the designing of the interior(Ya, a shit load of doe might be needed for this part). Unless an organization or two comes out of the wood work to help!! Everything from statues to actual HPL personal effects. Artists could mail their stuff in or we buy it off em for cheap. If one asshole with a good piece wants to much doe, fuck em! we'll settle for a less valuable piece & they can have the exposure. A lot of people out there are making Cthulhu items who might want to have their piece more visible. Now the place is slightly filled & we can open.
For now its just a museum for HPL & related Cthulhu art. Nothing grand. Some local couple runs it,(maybe me) barely surviving on selling T-shirts & Azathoth lighters lol. Donations & a cheap admission fee keep the place going.
Stage #3 Three years down the line! We have the money to completely remodel the place! Plaster the place like,LIKE H.R. Geiger. Lights, atmosphere & a PATH(trail) cut out to maximize the effect of the art & statues. If were lucky we get life sized sculptures like a "House of Wax" along the path. Cute. The chapels done & you gotta pay extra if you want to spend time in there lol. That would be mostly for us when we visit. At this point I imagine the place is definitely self sufficient.
Stage #4 Collaborate with all HPLovecraft organizations in the accumulation of items AGAIN!lol . The best of the best. They give it or we buy it. We got a slide show, clothing of HPL, fucking shoes he wore! Actual things he owned that can be viewed. Maps of how to get to his last place of residence or birth place, Articles from news papers of the times all that. Have a LARP show once a month or every year where we put on a show for the people. "Bring your kids for some entertainment" that kinda thing. And honestly, I think that might be the high point of the whole operation. Like the "viking festival" or "Ren fair", we have a local show that can be seen every so often that's FREE, till more people start showing up, then we sell tickets for maybe 2$. cheaper than a movie. One hour show that's it. Id think this place would inadvertently become a hub during Halloween lol(Haunted house show?).
Stage #5 That's it. Maintain at this level with the occasional switching out of old art for new items & the ever expansion of the house. Maybe get a new plot a few years latter. But if money is an issue, I think it would only be a problem in the beginning. Then again the curator would have to be quite the sociable guy to keep it going lol. Ill have the cash to buy & slightly renovate the house, thats not a problem; But the hardest part I see would be the accumulation of enough good stuff to get it started(art, statues etc). Plastering the barn to look like Geiger would take a lot of doe & at least some skill. It would take a while Im sure. The land being considered religious would help with its cost. All the money would go to furthering the Cult & Cthulhu's cause.
But ya, I see it would take at least 20G's to get some merchandise to start. But sustaining it I don't think would be so hard.
Especially if it was Cult endorsed. I would. Shit I would anyway.
