Strange...I always imagined hallucinogens to be the drugs of choice for fans of Lovecraft. There is no drug of choice for Lovecraft fans, one needs to only imagine and to dream. Lovecraft is a drug all its own. Awake! Ia Ia Cthulhu Fhtagn

It was an interesting article, cannabis would help with coming with some cool stuff, I know I haven't had any since joining the Coc. Plus getting into the fourth way, and having a couple of fourth way books to delve in I need my mind clear lol. CoC is like a drug for me anyways, but i do see cannabis as a helpful tool indeed. A lot of people commenting on that article are bringing up other myths concerning the origins of 4:20, most of which are actually retrospective guesses from people who used the term but didn't know what it meant. This is clearly the earliest documented reference.
It isn't the room the Grateful Dead always stayed in at hotels... It isn't Janis Joplin's death date... It isn't the section of the California penal code... It isn't the police department's radio code... It isn't Bob Marley's birthday...
And as for "well isn't that the time people go smoke?" Yes, but WHY? Isn't that kind of arbitrary? Wouldn't it vary depending on what time a particular school district let out, etc?
And as for Hitler's birthday, that's a total coincidence. Like you'd actually smoke weed because of a fascist dictator...

I had encountered at least one of those curious mirage-plants about which so many of our men told stories. Anderson had warned me of them, and described their appearance very closely—the shaggy stalk, the spiky leaves, and the mottled blossoms whose gaseous dream-breeding exhalations penetrate every existing make of mask...Although everything was spinning perilously, I tried to start in the right direction and hack my way ahead. My route must have been far from straight, for it seemed hours before I was free of the mirage-plant's pervasive influence. Gradually the dancing lights began to disappear, and the shimmering spectral scenery began to assume the aspect of solidity. When I did get wholly clear I looked at my watch and was astonished to find that the time was only 4:20. Though eternities had seemed to pass, the whole experience could have consumed little more than a half-hour.
"In the Walls of Eryx" by H.P. Lovecraft
It's come round again... Happy 4:20, everyone!
Perhaps the Cult of Cthulhu should sanction, as part of our emerald religion, a solitary day each year to partake in hallucinogenics? That would certainly cut down on abuse while incrementally opening the successive, undimensioned portals of our inner mind.
Thoughts?

I submitted it to the SNOPES page last year, but I didn't see it on the page, so I re-submitted it.

I smoked too much, yesterday and I have a hangover,I am stopping that for the summer,I have had enough of smoking,I was stoned for almost 20 years and so be it.
For those who like it,it can be helpful in many ways, but it can also be dangerous,it can relief anxiety, but it can also make it worse, the mind gets addicted and the withdrawal can be terrible, but it makes a good rope, and I would like to have clothes made of hemp, they could last for generations.
After so many years,it does in no way suit me anymore,I feel out of place and paranoid and find it hard to manage my anxiety and it is so strange that I could not sleep without it,but now,i have trouble sleeping when smoking it,and it messes up my stomach.
No,20 years is good,I want to spend the next 20 years with a clear head.

Everything in moderation. I don't get people that smoke all day, that shit makes you stupid. A little here and there, sure, but from the time you get up until you go to bed? That's like putting a layer of goo on your brain, and expecting it to function normally.

I agree with the moderation. Here's a helpful tip: if it's been less than a year since you've indulged in some kind of psychedelic / hallucinogenic drug, then pass April 20th on by in favor of getting all "gooey" the following 4/20. Sound fair?
Since the date caught me by surprise (as usual), I made zero preparations. However, I'm planning on not being as careless regarding 4/20/13.

Thanks for telling me how you heard the legend. I'm always interested in hearing how these tales are told in different locales.

I don't get it, I'm not sure what it takes to have this added to the page.

At least there are quite a few online articles that do mention Lovecraft's origination the term. As for the "urban legends" page, "I'll see it when I believe it." Hahaha!
