I have been thinking about similarities between the A:O and the cthulhu mythos and other religions or god systems in the world and wanted to talk about it. I had written sizable chunk on it but in the end can cover the same points much more quickly with out it, plus it wasn't going to make a conversation about it anymore... talk-able. Anyway, some example of what i mean might be the relationship of Shiva and shakti and its similarities to yog-sothoth and azathoth. One is raw yet blind power the other is complete knowledge. Or if you wanna look at cthulhu he has some similarities with... Jesus . In things like: he was born from yog-sothoth(all knowing all seeing etc. very Yahweh-ish) then he came to earth were he defeated the starshape, or crinoid old ones(can't remember which it was that was controlling earth life) Cthulhu then sunk into he ocean and used magic to protect the old ones. And now we are waiting for his return. I was explaining the pantheon of the gods in the mythos and the alien races to a friend and she said it was like the greek mythology, i don't know much about that(nothing more then what grade 9 history teaches) but theres another example. Just thought id open it up for chit-chat.

hmmm. Interesting thread. I see Nyalathotep as being like Loki and Shubby as being like nearly all fertility gods and godesses. I can see the similarity between Jesus and Cthulhu but I think Cthulhu is far greater. Jesus did fuck all other than give his opinion. Cthulhu fought for his people.
I think Cthulhu rising is far more likely than Jesus coming back. We nailed the dude to a plank of wood last time! Would you come back to save the people that tortured you to death? If Jesus does come back then Im sure he will be armed. Maybe David Koresh really was the second coming?

Cthulhu, Dragon-like entity dwelling within the sea, representing an ancient chaos long ago ensnared or subjugated. I am thinking of Tiamat.
Shub-Niggurath, the comparison with Pan is obvious, and since I love Pan, I'll just go with the obvious choice.
Yog-Sothoth, Choronzon. Choronzon is percieved as evil because he exists with one foot in Universe A and another in Universe B. Since Yog-Sothoth is the gate, gatekeeper and key, the two seem quite related. This comparrison is one I borrow from the Nighside of Eden, inwhich Grant made this argument much more convincingly than I could.
Azathoth--Blind Idiot God of All--Yaldaboath, the Demi-Urge.
Nyarlathotep. As both a herald of the gods and a psycho-pomp for mortals, there is the Hermes connexion.
Dagon could possibly equate with the Nommo (you remember, the fish gods from Sirius, from the mythology of a people who actually call themselves the Dogon.
Okay, so I went with obvious choices for all of these. I like the Shiva and Shakti comparison.

The concept of the Old Ones in reference to the patheons of whatever gods worshipped; is part of the reason I found my way here. It seemed a natural conclusion to draw that the Old Ones were representative of the ancient gods that, as a pagan, I pray and believe in...
Very insightful thread that you've started here, Shaz...Bravo!
