The Great Old Ones The Necronomicon is said to contain the lost knowledge of the Elder Gods, the ancient lords of darkness that held dominion over the Earth aeons ago. Believed to hold the key to opening forgotten gateways between worlds, the text prophesies the return of the Great Old Ones and contains forbidden rituals of summoning that will bring about their resurrection. Now, for the first time ever, the Necronomicon is set to music with this dark symphony by Nox Arcana. This epic concept album based on H.P. Lovecraft's legendary book of shadows features a mixture of exotic, dark fantasy themes with 21 tracks of ominous orchestrations, Gothic choirs, Egyptian and Middle-Eastern melodies, eerie voices and otherworldly chants. This musical grimoire is a spellbinding tribute to the Cthulhu Mythos—a powerful and sinister soundtrack to evoke your darkest nightmare. This cd is dedicated to the memory of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, with special thanks to August Derleth and Arkham House for keeping the mythos alive. * * * A perfect soundtrack for those dark nights of dripping green ooze & sinister rites of black magick!

Yeah I ended up ordering this cd for dance/trance work - was a bit disappointed. Not that it's not good, but not exactly what I was looking for.
The Awakening and Cthulhu Rising make for interesting expressive dance tracks, but other than that? eh not so much.

Yeah, it even gets kind of annoying at times but at other times it's just perfect for a certain mood. AND, it has great spoken word parts which make awesome material for sampling.
I'm perfectly aware that it's nowhere near GREAT MUSICK but still.
If I want quality insanity inspired black moon musick I listen to Coil or Kerovnian or Lustmord...

I really enjoy all of the ambient music that Nox Arcana does. In my opinion, their songs do a good job at setting a Lovecraftian mood.
Of course i've only listened to some tracks online and I have yet to actually own the CD. But I reckon it'll be worth it. ;D

there's so many that i can't list them all. but my top three would have to be Lull, Lustmord, and Kerovnian. really, just go to myspace. search myspace for "dark ambient" and listen to the original music from dark ambient projects on their profile. if you like it, then ask where it's available or if you can buy it directly from them.
also, if you can ever find the CDs by Current 93 called I Have A Special Plan For This World or In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land... snatch those babies up. i'm not a big fan of Current 93's usual stuff, but the Thomas Ligotti collaborations are amazing!

'Necronomicon' was alright. Not all-together terrible, at least. Reminded me of some of Burzum's ambient work, and early Mortiis. Quite good.

Lull, lustmord, or a compilation of dark ambient... there used to be one dedicated to Lovecraft called The Outsider. that was good stuff.
or even check for that genre of music on youtube.

I have a few CDs from Nox Arcana. As some have expressed here, they are not the best. But I still think they are pretty cool. I like how dramatic they are. Some of their stuff is truly frightening as well. Perhaps not as much as Lustmord, but I think Arcana are good.
