{paraphrased} Anyone who is involved in the practice of self examination, self observation, and realization will have their psyche changed dramatically.

I was watching this docu-drama about the history of cults yesterday with a friend, amused by the commentary she made about how these people were 'brain-washed'. I pointed out that many of these groups did not hold their members at gun-point, they were not captives but willing participants in having their minds conditioned. One of the cults reviewed was called 'Children of God' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_of_God_(cult)). The major concern for my friend, was that the cult had changed the psyche of its members so dramatically, that they had sex daily with the children also part of the cult. Flash forward years later, these kids are now adults stepping away from the cult. Several had committed suicide, were in mental health care centers, and one member killed his old 'Nanny' before offing himself. The members were willing to have their psyche conditioned, their pre-existing realities erased and new realities formed.
We spoke about the negative connotations attached to the word 'cult'. She still has Christian leanings, so I pointed out that Christianity was the largest surviving cult in history. Naturally she disagreed. We debated it a bit, and the discussion ended with - at least we are not in a cult now. I told her to speak for herself, and reminded her that she's a member of my grotto based in 'cult' ideologies. Even if the focus seems 'positive' - the aim is to condition the psyche.
Face it girl, not only are you actively involved in cult activities - you enjoy it.'
There were all these 'but....' responses.
'It's a cult, and based on my observations - you may very well drink any proverbial Koolaid I serve you.'

Very well said. I agree that Christianity is a cult has been and will so be. I find a place in the CoC that I haven't found anywhere else.
