i've recently gotten back into exercise, weightlifting, bodybuilding, etc.
a few years ago, i was starting to become obsessed with it, reading everything i could and getting some decent results. now i've returned. there are far-reaching similarities between bodybuilding and magic. if anyone wants to discuss such things or has a question, use this thread.

I've recently started working out again. I found this site hundredpushups.com/index.htmlA regular program of light exercise improves body and mind. I believe that it helps to avoid as much synthetics in ones diet also. Natural foods and pure water! Whatever the future holds, a healthy body will be an asset.

For me when i work out i tend to go through cycles, which is similar to my magic. I usually do wieghts, m.m.a. and a little cardio. Actually i hate cardio.

looks like an interesting program. i noticed the 200 sit up and 200 squat programs as well. let us know...
yeah, doing different cycles is a good thing. muscle confusion has been a popular strategy in recent years. basically, one just tries to fool the muscle so it continues to make gains.
for instance, if the only exercise you did was push-ups, and did them in exactly the same way, soon you'd reach a plateau... no more muscle growth. however, if you trick the muscle, surprise it, make it work in new, unexpected ways, the muscle can't get lazy.
at the moment, i'm not doing much cardio. just various weights... sometimes i go heavy with few reps, sometimes light with many reps.
yes, you certainly have to eat more (or at least take in more protein) when trying to add lean muscle mass. i try to eat a combination of eggs, chicken, steak, shrimp, and protein drinks every day.

Does anyone use the protein mixes, and bulk up formulas. I haven't ever tried them because i thought they seemed... well either people using them were gym junkies who are there everyday and think that they're Olympians, or these weedy bastards who have less muscle bulk then a pencil. The most i do is take a multivitamin. thats about it.

I don't use protein mixes or any "bulk up" formulas. "Bulking up" is not on my agenda. I want to get more physically fit and "stronger". I've done the heavy workout thing before, and I had to go on a 4K calorie a day diet to do so, I hated it. I have an ectomorph build, I "eat to live" rather than "live to eat". I enjoy good food, but I only eat when I'm hungry. Water is my favorite drink. I figure that when you're thirsty, your body wants water, not a sugar and chemical laden soft drink.
High protien intake is necessary to "bulk up", so I can see the usefullness of such things (mixes & formulas) if that is your goal.

everyone's metabolism is different, but the reality is that muscle requires protein. it does feel weird to change your diet around so you can build more muscle, and sometimes it's a hassle, but that's what you need to do.
a diet can be adjusted to suit whatever your needs are. you can really bulk up if you want or you can actually lose body fat while generating lean muscle mass. depends on calories, but it also depends on what ratio of protein, carbohydrates, and fat you're taking in.
if you're looking for a subtle boost that won't alter your lifestyle, but should give you some good results, drink a protein shake (or mix in some Whey protein powder with either milk, juice, or water) just after working out and just before bed. other times, be mindful that eggs, tuna, beef, chicken, and cottage cheese will only help you. including those things into your diet will yield you guaranteed results in 2 months, assuming you are lifting weights at least 4 times a week.
now, if anyone has a question about weightlifting specifically, just let me know. or share what your routine is. there are also a ton of youtube videos on bodybuilding.

a day or two after my last post on this thread, i really got into research mode regarding muscle building, nutrition, training techniques because i didn't want to half-ass my response... i wanted to provide Cultists with something solid and reliable.
well, i found a total system that seems to have everything i was looking for. even a guy like me who knows a lot about weight training won't know everything. there's so much B.S. out there in magazines, websites, and talk in the gym that it confuses almost everybody.
i purchased this all-encompassing plan and already like the changes in my training. results without the fear of overtraining! to me, it makes sense and i think it's the best way to build muscle.
in fact, i liked it so much that i decided to become an affiliate. any $ that i make from referring people to Sean's system will go right back into the Cult of Cthulhu infrastructure. use the link below and Sean will know that i referred you. curious? ok, check out this link:
www.nalewanyjfitness.com/go.php?offer=venger&pid=1
i'll definitely let you know how my body building experience goes and will provide pictures after 6 to 8 weeks of being in this program.

My work out schedule currently is mon-shoulders, tue-legs, wed-chest/tri's, thu-off, fri-back/bi's, sat-off, sun-off. I made the most gains when I was doing legs, chest, back, arms, shoulders in a 7 day week. For a while there I was training arms twice a week! It's been a while since I was measured but everyone seems to notice that I work out with. I'm tall and lean so I have to eat everything I can get my slimy green tentacles on. LOL! I used to turn sideways and disappear at 155lbs. almost 4 years later and I weigh 186lbs. almost solid. My fat deposits are starting to go away with the removal of soda. Skinny dudes need to lift moderate weight for 8-10 reps and take in 2500 to 3000 calories a day at least! I blew up in a year and a half.

just shoulders on monday? how many shoulder exercises do you do? at the moment, i'm just doing seated dumbbell overhead press and sometimes i'll throw in dumbbell side laterals. i lump my shoulder training in with either my back, chest, or legs workout. although, i could see doing shoulders, traps, and abs all on a monday... that would be a nice little 30 min workout for me.
one thing that i used to practice, then ignored for awhile (at my peril), and have since been utilizing with Sean's system is progression and intensity. i had no problem with the intensity. i always try to take every set to muscular failure. however, from month to month i was lifting the same stupid weight (i'm talking about the amount of weight) without any change! i guess i was waiting for my strength to increase before i moved up to lifting heavier dumbbells. however, that never happened. i would plateau after a couple months and never advance.
eventually, and i think this happens to many bodybuilders, i ended up doing way more reps and sets than was healthy while working out each muscle group more often during the week... and BAM!!! overtraining.
god damn it! it was very frustrating. but now that i'm aware of the importance of progression which is basically always adding more weight or a rep or two every week, bodybuilding makes a lot more sense. i can't wait to see and show the changes in the next few weeks/months.
here's that link again for anyone who wants to know more about Sean Nalewanyj's system: www.nalewanyjfitness.com/go.php?offer=venger&pid=1VS

I do dumbell or barbell upright rows, then arnold presses, then an isolated rear delt exercise that I saw Markus Ruhl do on an incline bench, burn out with lateral raises and front raises, then finish with heavy trapz. so six exercises total. I used to do legs and shoulders all in the same day but a friend of mine said that was too much for one day. So I do legs the next day (3 quad exercises 1 hammie and 1 calf) .Chest day I do 4 chest exercises alternating with 3-4 tricep exercises. Then a day off, and start up with back and bi's. I want big lats so I do 2 lat exercises on back day with a lot of attention to upper back as well. I could go in depth but I don't want to bore everyone.
I have no idea how many calories I take in I just try to eat once every 3 hours and all unprocessed foods. I "cheat" about once a week. A few of my meals are protein shakes at 44 grams a pop. On days off I don't eat that much though, I don't have the appetite...

You and me both Venger! I want to command attention when I walk into a place. I was toying with the thought of a pro-hormone cycle, but my trainer refused to train me if I take any chemicals to get bigger. Creatine and protein, glutamine etc.. is all good but no performance enhancing chem's.

The best shape I'd ever been in my life, was when I was strength-training with resistance machines. I traded that in for a frickin' bow-flex and everything went down hill from there. 3000 bucks down the tubes, I ended up getting rid of that monstrosity. I just got frustrated with how my body changed and wasn't quite the same.
I've been trying to tighten up, I gained 15lbs over the last 2 years - which doesn't look that bad on me but I'd like to tone it and get my muscle definition back.
When I was doing the strength training, my diet consisted of protein, the right mix of carbs, and about 3000 calories a day.
I had to slow it down for a while, I was getting too defined and started to look like a dude. I look back at some the old pictures and was like whoa- dude look like a lady! I was actually accused of being trans-gendered.
Women have to be careful in that regard. I want to be toned yes, but I don't want to look like Mr. Universe.
I'll have to check out this program more closely.

haha, we shall see.
i'd have to agree with your trainer, all-natural bodybuilding is the way to go. aside from protein powder and drinks i just take a few daily vitamins. there are better ways to break through a plateau than wasting time and money on supplements.

Funny you said that because I've been thinking about getting into stuff like that. Because if I want mastery over my mind, I'm going to need mastery over my body first!

if you're actually going to muscular failure with each set, then you definitely shouldn't be working muscle groups 3 times a week. 3 sessions training the same muscle per week with full intensity will leave you overtrained in no time. that means your muscles can't grow because they don't have enough time to rest and recover. you're just treading over the same ground workout after workout.
however, if you aren't ending each set with muscular failure then your muscles aren't going to grow anyways because they need sufficient stress to break down so they can eventually repair and grow after 4 to 6 days of being destroyed.

Conan's Father: Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. But Crom is your god, Crom and he lives in the earth. Once, giants lived in the Earth, Conan. And in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered. And the Earth shook. Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. [Points to sword]Conan's Father: This you can trust.

Conan The Barbarian. great film!
so what is the riddle of steel? is it that man is potentially stronger than the sword he wields? i believe so.
and the other infamously awesome quote from that movie begins with a question... "What is best in life?"
who has seen this film recently, anyone?
