Just got done reading this book again. Read it at work on my lunch break as a focus. Its nice being able to read through an HPL story as a reminder of my goals & loyalty to the Cult.
This book is one of my favorites of HPL's to read. I love stories of exploration & finding of alien worlds. I just saw the movie trailer for it & dont know what to think. I do believe a lot can be added to the book to make the movie more gripping & complete though. But sadly it looks as if the story will stray.
My favorite parts in the book are:
#1 The description of the tools they use for the expedition.( since that era had some interesting inventions. And since their scientists, it would be cool to see a couple items that were just coming out at that time).
#2 The radio communications between our main character & Lake sequence is bad ass. Lots of tension there. And opportunity to show our hero just doing his job as a normal guy. trying to keep his head straight.
#3 Investigating the Lake camp. A big CSI opportunity.
#4 Of-course the plane ride over the mountains. Should be as epic as it can get.
#5 The walking through the city should take a long time. I don't see why a few more creatures couldn't be roaming about in the city( In reference to the movie). Low key though. Perhaps just as intimidated by the humans presence.
#6 The penguins are fine. Descending into the buildings tunnels should take a long time. I think everyone would love that. Lord of the rings shit.
#7 The Shoggoth could play hide&seek with the characters a bit more than it does in the book. This would give the characters a chance to get a bit lost while allowing the audience time to get to know the monster a little more.(Sounds it makes; how its body shifts in the darkness; how intelligent it seems, etc).
A couple more people added to the group would allow for a better body count(for horror fans:) Also showing our hero's humanity in trying to save them. Plus some good arguing:)
In the book, our characters feared that while flying away, something was going to reach out & attack the plane. An illusion might look cool but then it might not. A giant tentacle reaching out for the plane may or may not be a good idea.
The ending with them leaving all fucked up, could fit just fine for me, but I see hollywood making it grander. Oh well.
Still the story is spectacular in the mystery that surrounds the city. I think that's what we will all be looking forward to the most. What sucks is how much of it will remain true to HPL. I mean, if they actually mention all that background info about Cthulhu & his history from the stars. HOLY SHIT! It would definitely open up a huge new era in film making for hollywood for the next five to ten years. Look at what "Taxi driver" did to the 70's vigilantism issue. Or Mad Max for the 80's apocalypse fear. lol The info in this book would blow public's minds away.
Hail Cthulhu!

Hm, it's strange. Could Lovecraft's stories be coming to life?

HPL has a lot of movies out. But not on this scale. Its about time we got some real exposure. The preview for the movie has to be one of the worst Ive ever seen. But you can still tell the movie will be good.
If they actually mention Cthulhu's name( which from a producers point of view would be quite an investment) it will usher in a storm of interest. Anyone working on the film who's smart would know the ramifications of such an action. If Del Toro does mention it, Brovo. We will see a mass influx of initiates. Bad ass I'd say.

How many Cultists have read At the Mountains of Madness? On page #72, line 25, I found something interesting.
When the Old ones/Elder things built their city, it was 300 miles from a range of massive mountains that contained an "Object" that they feared("the denizens of that city had themselves known the clutch of oppressive terror;" & "recoiling affrightedly from some object".
As the mountains neared the city,(due to continental drift) this object was washed out & carried with the river straight into Elder downtown.
Here the river empties into the "Abyss" where the Elder things are drawn to build their new home due to the freezing temperatures. Strange the object that they feared is where they build their new home? Ultimately they end up revering the mountains that this object comes from. And the mountains slowly push there way up against the city. Maybe drawn to the object?
My theory is that the object is a device Cthulhu is looking for & was willing to war for. It came to earth long before any of them did & is of immense power.
2/6/11 I just finished "The Haunter in the Dark" & the black, sphere stone in the story can't be the same object. The haunter doesn't seem nearly as powerful as Cthulhu so I don't think the Elder things would worship it( as told in ITMOMadness). It could be a peace of the object though.

Well, I take back what I said about the new movie coming out. It looks like we will be seeing the film through the eyes of the "Lake party" instead of our hero & Danforth. Which is rad because the other Lake party had a lot more of an adventure in exploring the city.
A lot of mystery surrounded that group, so it will be nice to see it from their perspective. Should be pretty sweet.
