This wasnt easy, there is no "clear" description as to what it is. But having recently aquired the Cthulhu Mythos encyclopedia, the best I can come up with is its like a black hole. A dark void from witch nothing but chaos exsists. so rather then an image of the creature, I did it more like a repersantation and......oh, take a look, youll get the idea. I kid you not, it is the spin or twirl that reminds me of these symbols. Your Azathoth, has the same twirl. This was created by me during a shower trance. And this was created by Hower (Aka Frater Kraken of the EOD)Both symbolize Azathoth. Here is the thread where we realized that we had more or less come up with the same thing. Howlers version is the oldest though. Mine MAY have been a subconscious copy, or thats what i tell myself anyway. Now that i see your Azathoth, i again wonder. cocthulhu.proboards105.com/index.cgi?board=all&action=display&thread=1696&page=1Its strange, but we all seem to agree that there is an twist or twirl around an axis. I dont let it get to me, but it IS rather cool that we all identify Azathoth as a twirl.

It dose fit quite well. hmmm atom smashing....like that thing the swiss are trying to do with that 17 mile ring......now im really worried. Mars is looking really nice right now ^^;

I too was looking for imagery to connect to Azathoth. I named the grotto here in VA: Azathoth 1919.
Upon my research, I discovered that the first time Azathoth appears in Lovecraft's diaries is the year 1919. It is speculated that Azathoth is a fusion of Azazel, and Thoth.
The imagery, would be Thoth's ibis head, on the body of Azazel, a goat-like desert dwelling creature.
It's a fusion of Earth and Air symbolism.
While we seem grounded to the earth (By Azazel), we seek flight (Thoth).
How did they conclude this image in the Cthulhu encyclopedia?
