Has anyone here seen or read "The Mist" by Stephen King. I just saw the film a couple of days ago, and it is a very Lovecraftian theme. I havent read the novel. The movie is the kind of movie you only see once, because once people have seen it there isnt really any "unknowns" left, and the movie thrives on these "unknowns". I enjoyed the movie, and was just wondering if anyone here had also layed eyes upon it, or knew the story from the books. I cant really tell anything about the story without taking away from the unkowns. But i recommend it as a one time experience. Fear changes everythingFor once, Stephen King kinda amazed me. I never thought he would. Good job on the ending Stephen! Oh yeah btw, heres a trailervideo.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-US&vid=a55c82fb-d56c-4330-9823-b3241a821e36

I was doing some reading about King, and found out he has written at least one other Lovecraftian story (probably made numorous). This is what wiki says about the short story "Crouch End" by Stephen King.
From the wiki: Crouch End is a horror story by Stephen King, originally published in New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos (1980), and republished in a slightly different version in King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes collection (1993). It contains distinct references to the horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft.

i watched it after it first came out on DVD... remember mocking it by saying, "so lame you might just commit suicide" (you'd have to watch it to fully get that joke).
while some items are really cool, the movie overall did not impress me. too many unrealistic elements. and when are they going to realize that CGI creatures are not scary. at all! they look like cartoons. didn't filmmakers learn their lesson from George Lucas' rancor-sized blunder? computer generated images are the antithesis of great horror/scifi special effects.
anyways, i've heard that the original short story is much better.

VS That is why i wont watch spiderman or Hulk movies.. i have videogames with better, more realistic creatures than those movies.. I agree with you.. the animatronic models from the ORIGIONAL Starwars movies and Alien movies look ALOT more realistic.. I WAS disapointed on what they did to Yoda!

I also watched the new Batman some time ago, that was also a total CGI nightmare, but i expect that from ALL movies today without exception. In my mind, the days of cool stuff like Terminator and such is gone forever. I havent seen a movie i really cared for since i was a kid, and i cant imagine i shall again.
Even the new land of the dead/dawn of the dead/and so on, suck ass. Dumb stories that dont add up. Silly figures that i cant relate to, and effects that make me want to go snuff someone myself just to show people what its supposed to look like. ;D
Oh yeah, i looooved the new Rambo after seeing that though.
I can understand Rambo. ;D

I watched "The Mist" a while back, and it was pretty crappy, the book went into more detail and starts earlier, and as for the end of the movie, Stephen King really likes screwing over his main characters at the end. I was hoping that the fanatical religious woman was going to survive.

haha, ironic me finding this post. My boyfriend bought me the movie last night. I'm a pretty big fan of Steven King's work, and I actually really enjoyed the movie. I have yet to read the book though. It's for sure on my list.

I like how the story plays with human nature and reminds us just how sheepish vermin we can be as a race. Our nature is perverse and degenerate when in this form. We are not even beasts, we are monsters (blasphemic anomalities of nature). ;D I havent read any new King books, i have only read "pet cemetary" and "Desperation" and such old classics. I ended up discarting King along with Koontz when i was a child because it was just TOO hollywood minded for me. I am more of a Stoker and Poe kinda guy. The heavy filmatization of his books ruined it for me, having seen so many of his movies i was always able to pin point how the story would go along, because it was the same pattern every time. Like a hollywood movie, written down into book form.

But remember the ancient, Kingu, whos blood flows though us pretty much represents self-destruction and self-limitation.. least that's what i've heard..

I was hoping that the fanatical religious woman was going to survive. dude, that ending took BALLS. as soon as i saw it i was like "alright, this director played fucking hardball over this for SURE". and true enough, Frank Darabont said he'd only agree to make the movie if the ending in the screenplay was kept. not your typical hollywood movie. or ending. i thought this flick was very refreshing. its not always sunshine after the rain.

took balls or sucked balls? ;D sorry, i had to.
yeah, the ending was extreme, but everything leading up to the last few minutes didn't hold together. at least, not in my opinion.
take a look at John Carpenter's The Thing. great beginning, middle, and end. and that ending was not only ballsy, but ambiguous and ten times more frightening than the whole Mist movie put together.

oh man its been so long since ive seen that i totally forgot what happens in it!
how about that other Russell/Carpenter flick? you know... fucking BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA!!!
lol i grew up on that, goonies, and monster squad.
annnnnnnnd i totally have kurt russell's face from BTILC tattooed on my leg. underneath it says "It's All In The Reflexes".
epic.
but yeah im totally watching the thing again soon. speaking of lovecraftian horror, anyone ever seen the japanese film Uzumaki? soooo lovecraftian it hurts. im not one for this ongoing all things japanese-horror (and subsequent SHITTY fucking U.S. remakes), but i like that one. and suicide club. and versus. check all those out.
now the koreans... they make some good fucking movies. best in east asia in my opinion. old boy, hansel and gretel... koreans get down behind the lens for sure.
thoughts?

cool. i love Big Trouble in Little China as well. just like Prince of Darkness, Assault on Precinct 13, Escape from New York, and In the Mouth of Madness. Monster Squad is another good one.
your Kurt Russell tattoo sounds awesome. personally, i'm not into Asian horror... that's just me.

VS yeah man me not so much either... my favorite is late 70's early 80's italian. argento, fulci, i forget his name (roggero d something or something) but of course cannibal holocaust... the shit coming out of italy in those years is still untopped in my opinion. what do you think?

The mist was alright aout an 5/10, and that five goes entirely to the gore and monsters. The ending was... less then satisfying, but it wasn't a let down because most of the movie was kinda shitty. they needed better actors, and better charectors for that matter.

yes, i must agree with that. everything from Zombie to Cannibal Ferox to Suspiria! wish they still made movies like that. Italy around the 1970's must have been a great time to be a filmmaker!
you would love my DVD collection...

Who cant identify with Frankenstein? ;D They are making a new one or rather they alrady have, i kept finding pictures from it when i was looking for the old movie poster. Here the new poster I like the old poster better, why not just make a sequel, death race 2500 or something like that. ;D hmmm....death race....sorta like homosapiens? ;D

Death race(New one) was fine, Id own it. But they left out some stuff. You knew the public watched the race, but they didn't show a single observer:( Remember the feeling you got from the "Running Man" with the crowed cheering. They should have added that." And with out further adieu. Its time to start RUNNING!!! Que dramatic 80's electro music. Love that part.
"The Mist" was a one time see. Lots of dynamics not taken advantage of. The black guy should have been more important. His fate came without him learning any real lesson. And we liked him. The director pushed the whole religious vs realist thing & its fine that religion won, but not after making it look so bad. We were definitely rooting for the realists. They could have cleared it up with a few more jokes. But it was OK.

I didn't learn my lesson the first time, so I watched it again. I have never heard such shitty dialog in all my life, although "Blade Master "might still be up there.
List of things wrong with this film: #1Why does our hero say "don't go back there, I heard a noise". When(if he was so shook up) could have just said the truth"something fucking monstrous just tried to rip the metal door down in back, everyone come look!". #2Why is the crowd portrayed as total sheep. #3The cute, innocent, cashier chic buys it WTF! #4The black attorney dude(the only person we do like)buys it. #5The annoyingly loud & dramatic Dead Can Dance montage song. #6Our hero's wife dies, & he can barely muster up one tear. #7Our hero kills his own son, laughable. #8The best acting finally comes when the hero can't kill himself lol. #8After all is said & done the religious people won.
This film wanted to be a video game where you battle & try to jump over the tentacles in the loading dock, dodge acid webbing while obtaining medicine in the pharmacy, & politically survive the religious freaks while trying to make it to your car. Where are my keys?!
Cheats to the game allow you to swing an axe better, be more convincing to others, & find the extra bullets the store clerk always seemed to have. Thank God it had Cthulhu monsters in it that eat the stupid people.
Awake!
