Do you guys do any poppet work? I try to use as much sympathetic magic as I can. Something that has a DNA connection to the person you're casting a spell on, from experience, acts as a lens. Focusing the power and intent on the subject at hand. Add in something that reminds you of the person and it adds in more power and focus.
So I find poppet work to be quite powerful in both of those respect.
I wrote up this "moderate magician" tutorial on cloth poppets.
First off, what is a poppet?
A poppet, for lack of a better description, is a voodoo doll from popular culture. A poppet is used in what is called "sympathetic magic". Sympathetic magic is when one thing represents another. The poppet represents the person in which you'd like to do the magic on, in other words. Poppets work exceptionally well in various forms of magic. Healing, love or attraction spells, mind control spells, banishing rituals and they can sometimes be used as a sigil in chaos magick
---------------------------
I personally prefer cloth poppets. Cloth poppets take a bit of the home economics skill so are more difficult to create compared to wax poppets.
A. Acquire cloth. For the best effect, cloth from the person that you're looking to operate the sympathetic magick on would work best. If not, almost any cloth will work for the poppet.
B. Acquire items with a spiritual connection. Hair, nails, blood, semen, scabs, or anything else containing their DNA work the best. A photo in conjunction tot he DNA also increases the power. While a photo alone would work, something with a DNA connection adds the most power.
C.(Optional) Acquire herbs that have something to do with the magic that you're looking to work if your poppet is single use magic specific.
D.Draw out the shape that you'd like. If it's a Dog, use a dog shape, human, use a human shape, etc. The key here is to draw that shape slightly larger than you'd like. Then copy that same shape on another piece of cloth.
E. Start sewing the shape inside out. Stop about 3/4ths of the way around and turn the shape inside out. Now place the DNA and/or Photo within the doll. It's best to have the semen / blood or any liquid DNA on a cotton swab or paper swab. Stuff the doll with cotton balls. Natural fibers work best. Sew the doll up the rest of the way
F. Using a Sharpie, charcoal, or a charcoal pen add personal details. Scars, eyes, nose, as much personal detail that you can add to make it more realistic.
G. (Optional) Dress the doll in clothing that the person usually wears. Doll shops are a good source, but hand crafted works best.
H. Now, preform a banishing ritual. (Cast a circle, etc, depending on your belief system). Like servitors, any wayward spirits can cause problems during the life birthing process.
I. Now command the poppet to live. Call him or her by name. The name of the person that you created. Believe that the poppet that you created is that person. Picture a spiritual cord connecting this new life with the life of the person that it connects. By your will, this doll is something more. Know, believe and will. Feel the emotions that his person brings in you. Fill it full of energy to bring it to life.
J. Close down the ritual.
K. Protect this poppet. What happens to it is spiritually connected to the person that he represents.
Warnings: This tutorial assumes that you have at least moderate magical knowledge. Also that you are aware of any danger associated with magical usage. Creation of this particular poppet will cause significant drain on you. Preparation is your best friend.

i've made a few puppets that were magical entities/servitors, but hadn't tried the traditional voodoo aspect.
the sheer creepiness of puppets probably adds to the flavor.

It can be a bit creepy if you know what you're doing with a needle and thread.
I was a home-ec major in high school. Also, my mother always told me that a man needs to take care of himself and not depend on women.
So I learned how to sew and sew well. Same with knitting & cross stitching. The only thing I use it for is magical work. I'd feel for the poor person that saw my doll collection. It would be startling.
I make dolls for everyone I hang around with often. People are always so careless with their own DNA ^_^

my mother taught me how to sew a little. although, a doll can be made without such skills. just take a big piece of cloth, put a tennis ball in the middle and wrap it round, then tie some twine so that it becomes the neck and the ball underneath the cloth is the head. twist some cloth appendages, use more twine, paint a face or other markings, and there you have it. a non-sewn cloth puppet.
let the creepiness begin!

Thats a great method. I have got this "blank" doll laying round. I made it from tin foil wrapped in cloth i bought in Egypt and then tied together with whatever string bits i could find. I generally dont voodoorize my surroundings though, i believe that punishment should be thoroughly earned. I would love to see a sewn doll.

Damn that looks nice. I do have a neat poppet that came to me in a vision last week that's a prototype. I just scanned it.

I used to have a penchant for corrupting baby dolls. Using a permanent marker, I would draw symbols all over them, and draw pseudo-Corpse-Paint on their faces in black. Of course, I'd have to use a red one to make lots of blood dripping from the mouth. I never thought of using them for magic or ritual, but you all got me thinking of them again, so I may give it a shot to see what I can come up with

VSHehe I remember in highschool, in that one class where you would have to take care of some baby doll that cried and stuff, a few people destroyed their doll. One that I know made his doll look something like a zombie Pinhead when he was done.. called it Livingdeadbaby (one word). Naturally, he failed the class.. but it was priceless to see the look on the Teacher's face!

Personally, poppets freak me out. And I wouldn't know what to use one for apart from hurting people.

Poppet work, is more formally called sympathetic magic. I think the term 'sympathetic' throws the whole thing off and it needs to be more appropriately defined to match the purpose.
Sympathetic communicates that you identify with, by experience. Empathic communicates that you can 'imagine' what it would be like, not really coming from a place of personal experience.
Say for instance you wanted doom to come to an enemy, the doll (as the pathway) represents your enemy, you can 'imagine' all of the destruction you would like to come to it. This could be defined as empathic magic.
In the case of compassion rituals, where you are the doll representative pathway, that could be more along the lines of sympathetic. That energy can come from a place of experience, a healthy outlet to vent pain and anquish and that comes from a place you can relate to.
The doll can also be used to represent a person you love and care about, and in that case it could be sympathetic but it is often more empathic.

I know this post it a bit old and I don’t know what kind of response if any that I’ll get form anyone but I’ve wanted to put my two cents in for a longish while.
Currently I’m constructing a mass amount of cloth Ushabiti figures that are to be reused. When finished I’ll have two complete sets ranging in colors including bags to house them in and a much smaller bag to keep herbs and random things in for each different using. That bag will also be reused after the contents are emptied were I think they ought to go. The reason that I’m constructing two sets is so that my lover can practice with them as well, it will be a secret gift that she’ll receive shortly in the near time ahead of us. I bet she’ll be tickled black pink’n’blue when she is given the token of gratitude because she’s been trying to make cloth ones her self but sows horribly bad!
Yeah I’ve used a few wax Ushabiti (that’s a Tameran word b.t.w.) figures from time to time and got nice results such as in this one case that I’m going to tell you of. I carved and sculpted one form a candle, I even use a hair dryer to smooth the surface of the doll.
Anyways it was for a dear friend of mine that I more then just care for. Sadly she can’t be taken serious about her feelings about me, it’s been so many years to have past, she was my first girlfriend and is my best friend from child hood.
It was about a year after she had her third kid and was trying to lose weight but she could exercise after that pregnancy because her time is spoken for.
Diet and pills haven’t worked out for her in the past so I asked her for a peace of hair that I later embedded into the doll, she wasn’t easy with the question but she knows that I’d never want to hurt her (heck I’d like to be a dad to her children if she’d let me) so anyways she gave it to me. The conclusion of the spell work ended in her losing a large amount of weight in a short but long time span of three months.
I’d asked her to tell me how much she recently lost to better help determine what would be healthy for her before I’d go to relight the doll’s wick. I stopped after she was happy with what happened (218 lbs. to 140 in three months) then buried the reaming left over’s of the candle in her yard underneath her bedroom window. This was the longest spell operation that I’ve done.
"The woman that I spoke of is one of the few friends that I’ve been so most open with about witchcraft" but doesn’t like some of the things that she‘s watched me do with it. Her mother taught her Reiki as a kid so she’s a bit more receptive to the fact and oddly enough her mom was the one that taught me to use tarot cards. I say that odd because she’s a supposed christian woman. Her mother’s spiritual résumé consists of her being a Reiki master of several years but that’s enough said about her mom.

Poppets will never go out of style, and will always have use. These are the small hand-sew versions I make. This variation has a workable design: The doll is hollow, which contains a scroll. There is also a small bag attached. The scroll is for magical operations, and the bag to hold magical items like crystals, herbs, sigils, or what ever. This type is for likeness, so in essence you make the doll of yourself to look like you. This was a custom job. The owner of the doll advised me that he hand painted his own personal sigil on it, used the scroll and the bag - it's a working poppet.

wah Cora Sahn, can i say you are a Puppet Master? The empty space to add charging/programming items is a great idea.
I never tryed to work with dolls, you inspirate me to do so!
HAhah last year i was living in a loft with psytrance scene friends, after few parties some happyhardcore crew was squating our place, i took a stuffed yellow rabit, drawed big black "X" on its eyes and fixed it on the wall with a nine inches nail trough its head, writing bellow: a good candyraver is a dead one.
maybe it was not very magickal, but it did created discoimfort for these people to be there.... I know im not nice sometimes. Whatever.

In fact it was mostly a symbolic form of comunication, and also a medium to exorcise my anger
We could also say that every symbolic act done according to the will and desire is magical
Many people do magic in there everyday life and don`t even know that...
the magicians are different only for they study to understand how this work and practice in order to master it. ...And sometimes explore their spirituality trough it.
