The Simon Necronomicon is the first one I've ever used (pretty much the only one I've used), and I've chosen to continue to use it because of its nostalgic value. I'm sort of partial to it. I know all of the discrepancies about it, its criticisms, how it could much more appropriately have been named "the Bastard Necronomicon," with no loss to its literary value, but I would like to know the opinions of others here on the matter. How magickally and/or cosmologically sound is it? As far as I'm concerned, despite all of the ill I've heard about it, I consider it THE Necronomicon.

The end of "Gates of the Necronomicon" is calendar pages for those interested in doing gate-walking. The rest of the book covers connections to the celestial gate, Taoism, the I Ching, and goes over the Conjuration of the Fire God, the Conjuration of the Watcher, the Invocation of your patron god and goddess, and how to perform the ritual for gatewalking. It says nothing about the Book of Fifty Names or the Urilia Text. The companion book "The Necronomicon Spell Book" does tell how to use the Book of Fifty Names. As for the Urilia Text, you will have to see my posts as nyarlathotep2009 on how to use the Urilia Text in order to make use of that.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. To me, the only Necronomicon is the Simon Necronomicon. I first picked it up in a little Gothic store called Raven, and I was mesmerized by the concepts within. I also agree that reading it gives a certain nostalgic sense. I enjoy it's fairly simple magical instructions. The Simon Necronomicon is THE Necronomicon.

I own it and have read it. I can't find many of the materials needed to do the walkings though. The closest thing I can come to is calling forth my BANDAR. Very interesting concepts though, and I've heard it is very workable.

You should know that you do not really need the seven metals in order to do gatewalking. A friend of mine told me that most people just use paper that has the seal on it which has been blessed by the Zonei. These people also draw the gate out on the floor so that when they walk around the gate so many times its easier to astral project into the gate.

I dont really like the simonomicon. I read lovecraft years before finding simons book and was really disappointed that it mostly dealt with mesopotamian style neopaganism. To me the Necronomicon is an astral source of gnosis concerning the great old ones / outer gods / ancient ones. You wont find it in any bookstore but have to discover it for yourself by lucid dreaming and astral work. This gnosis is primarily channeled through the inspired writings of HP Lovecraft. His stories can be used as astral gateways to reach the real Necronomicon. Hope I dont offend any one by not agreeing on the value of Simons book. However, I did like Gates of the Necronomicon - it was very enlightening about "when the stars are right" stellar mythos stuff.

I agree that the true Necronomicon will not be found in a bookstore. It is beyond. And it is truly maddening. I still however, enjoy the printed books and the pdf's for what they are, great works. Nothing less.

I read the Simon, and Dead Names; the whole story really just turned me off. What a load of CRAP! I thought to myself. I had this guy contact me about an underground organization dedicated to validating it as the only TRUE Necronomicon. He asked me if I was a 'Gate Walker'. Apparently it involves revealing secrets about the OTO and Aleister Crowley. Normally I would jump in and read up on anything involving Crowley, but the whole thing is just 'hype' to create capitalism. In my opinion, if you buy into the whole story about Simon, the need for his secrecy and the story about how he came to know the Necronomicon, it just seems to me that it's the Barnum Effect in action.
That's just me. I know lots of cultists identify with the Simon version, as the 'true' Necronomicon - but I reject it entirely.
If anyone wants me to put you in touch with this guy, let me know. He's looking for more Simon supporters.
