Hey... was wondering if anyone had any info on where one would go to find out stuff about light magic, as opposed to dark magic - is dark magic = chaos magic? or is chaos magic neutral and can be watever you wnt it to be?.. is that how light and dark magic is made? chaos magic being used for 'evil' making it dark magic, and chaos magic being used for 'good' making it light magic? In any case, as I tend to like balance a lot I don't wanna overload on dark magic, well rather I just wanna make sure I don't exclude any light magic just cuz there's mainly dark magic available... (assuming that chaos = dark .. but as noted that might not be the case..) thx a bunch

Chaos magick cannot be labeled. personally I feel the same way about all Magick.
Take Azathoth For an example of chaos magick, A blind an insane god/force. It doesn't judge or care for what its use as it is blind.

Any magic is neutral. Wat makes that magic "Dark" or "light"(I call it White) is yo own actions. Chaos magic is a totally neutral kind of magic, U can use this for evil or good. Chaos magic never can be called light magic or dark magic,is always neutral. As a wizard, I need 2 study all kinds of magic, I studied White magic 3 years of my life, neutral N alchemy 2 years N dark magic Im a beginner (5 months)... Look for some Cabalah books. Cabalah (fo rly) isnt magic, isnt religion, but It shows some trues about the world N give 2 U some (awesome) powers. Look for some books of Enochian magic, books of John Dee N others of Eliphas Levi. Or simply find a master of White Magic.

Some would also define it after the source of power called. Jews can perform "white" magic without sinning if their powers are called from God or angels, but pagan practices calling other gods or forces would be seen as black magic, and Kabbal can be used for divination but not lets say astrology. I'm giving that as an example, but I think it would be the same with any religion: white magic is yours, black magic is the others'. Not that I approve, but it's probably behind many judgements.

If you follow the path of light the intent is to give up you self to a Higher power. Islam, Christianity and Buddhism would be examples. Dark is diametrically opposed the aim is not to surrender to a higher power but to deify yourself . eg Satanism The techniques used by both are almost identical. What is different is the intent. Light your aim is to become a part of a single united source with no giving up your personality. Dark is conscious attempt gain the will to achieve immortality. Before you all start calling me a LOON I do not mean physical immortality. Everything dies, what I mean is that by an act of WILL the personality survives after the mortal coil is shrugged off . Was Chtulhu not a being who achieved immortality by magic? Essentialy the light and dark is the choice between SURRENDER or STRENGTH Jedi or Sith NWO or Anarchy Chaos is a school of magic where no particular tradition is followed. If you feel the need you take a pinch of Wicca a little Barrett mix it up with a whole Bunch of Simon and call up Rod , Jane and Freddy. Despite this freedom of expression Chaos has become strangely codified. It is neither light or dark thats left to you. Dark magic is regarded as evil because you deny God, and as Venger points out in Cthulhu Cult you can bless as well as curse with it.

Take a look at any traditional Shamanic system and you will see chaos magic in action.
Chaos magic is in itself neither light nor dark. It is. I find it refreshing. Its about what works and abandoning a set system of thought. It asks the practitioner to release himself from the mundane way of thought as well as his fears. If one is frightened of experimenting with magic it is not the path for you.
All Shamanic magic, which once again I say encompasses chaos magic.....(chaos magic is urban or modern shamanism) requires one to experiment constantly and modify methodology in an effort to improve ones magical ability.
Without experimentation any system stagnates.....chaos magic works.....but just because it appears easy and simple to do, does not divorce the Magus from his responsibility to Self to continually raise the bar.
You can go out and create a sigil in minutes....jack off on it and walk away....that is Chaos magic....but you will get out of it exactly the amount of energy that you put into your working.
I think that Chaos magic has such a bad rap in the magical community because it is thought of as "fly it by the seat of your pants magic". I won't say that I have not done this "fly by" method before...but I have a lot of experience and years of practice in meditative techniques that allow me to focus my Will with a bit less effort than I did years ago.
Newbies tend to think that they can short cut or go around the exercises that build Will are then disappointed at their results.
All magic is neither light nor dark....good nor evil. It just is....it is our own personal ethics that decide that for us and the answer is different for everyone. Since Chaos magic does allow the Mage to curse and affect others will....then certain groups within the pagan community have already made an ethics call there. They think Chaos magic is bad....but in reality....they are only arguing for their own limitations.
I want none!
