Do any of you here practice the ancient Runic magick of Northern Europe? Or any other similar system in the world, although Elder Futhark seems to be the most commonly used Runic alphabet in the "occult circles". I have only recently started on this path and begun studying their mysteries, and today my first set of runes will be complete. I'd rather not, at least yet, communicate any of my first scrying results since they're, well, of somewhat secret nature. But if any of you have Worked, or currently Work, with them, I would be very interested in hearing about your viewpoints into this old art, and it's possible relation(s) to the Cult of Cthulhu. Thanks! Oh, and here is an excellent blog of the Finnish Rune-Gild member & author of several related books Ensio Kataja, mainly concerned with guess-what: wihaz.wordpress.com/...and here is his former blog: ensiokataja.blogspot.com/...and for the Finnish-speaking Cultists (are there any here except me?), a blog-correspondence on Runes between Kataja and Tapio Kotkavuori: katajakotkavuori.blogspot.com/

I believe that the ways of the runes was almost lost and so now it is highly occult/hidden. I do not know if any true words have ever been published on rune magic. I think that one must search ones core, ones spiritual roots to use the runes for magic. I believe that runes are tied to (our) nature and so, if you search you will find. All you need is the runes. Your respected secrecy on the subject leads me to wonder if you are not already on the right path with the rune magic. HIL ODIN! DEN ENØJEDE KONGE! IA! IA! EDIT: I only use the runes as a magical alphabet at this moment. But my use is far from the core of the source of the rune magic. I use a the newer Futhark rune alphabets combines with a few modifications to enable me to write with a full alphabet. Writing in runes feels very different that writing with this ,the latin, alphabet, it feels much more natural. More ancient. LAST EDIT: Oh yeah i forgot, Welcome to the forum. Suomi? Does that mean you live near the mountains and forests? So very, very last EDIT: Here is a recent thread from this forum about runestones if you are interested in such. cocthulhu.proboards105.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1195991848

Thanks for the welcome! And yeah, Suomi, for good or ill. Denmark? I agree that another people's words cannot truly initiate you to the mysteries of Runes (or anything for that matter), but the right words from people who have years and years of experience on the path can help the beginner in their journey. I am at the very beginning right now, I haven't even memorized the names and meanings of all the runes yet, much less can I write in runic script. But I learned to write and think in Japanese (not at any advanced level, a few hundred kanji or so) so I should be able to do so in Futhark too with a bit of dedication although this is a very different matter... Did not the All-Father start teaching what he mysteries he learned while hanging on Yggdrasill as soon as he got down? So too should we try to teach and enlighten each other to the best of our abilities when possible, so the Cult would grow stronger! Ia Cthulhu! Ia Väinämöinen! (Edit: yeah, I noticed you're from Danmark... it says so on your profile ) Edit II: there ain't no real mountains in Finland, some rocky cliffs and arctic hills in Lapland though. But plenty of forest! Although I can't say the majority of it is even remotely ancient because of our very efficient lumber industry... Edit III: Ordered three books on the subject. Northern Mysteries & Magick by Freya Aswynn, Runecaster's Handbook by Edred Thorsson and Riimujen viisaus by Ensio Kataja. Those should prove valuable.

True, but i am of the mind that the occult should only be offered to those who seek. Yeah, the world is too small to be left alone.

Again I should have selected my words more carefully... and those who seek, generally tend to find someone or something to teach them. But if there were none to write the books, or no members in the CoC forum to talk to, no great heroes or gods to tell the mythological stories about, just because everybody would keep everything to themselves... well, I'm glad it isn't like that.

I fully agree, the fire must be kept burning.
I am just a humle seeker myself, but there are folks out there who are like walking dictionaries of serious magic. But i guess, those are the kind of folks you never meet in normal places, ;D

I haven't done any real Working with my runes yet, but when I was doing the ceremonies related to their making, I asked the Gods for wisdom and guidance.
I think I have received exactly that.
Gentle breeze my mind revives longing eyes gaze into the sky high above two ravens fly Can this not be a sign for me? High one are you guarding me?
Hidden face with many names one-eyed master of disguise unknown you wander for few to see mystery-man, are you watching me? I seek, I yearn, will you answer me?
Come Odin, come wise Odin Keeper of thought and memory seeker of shadows, seeker of truth my thirst for life I offer to you
Come Odin, come one-eyed Odin Lord of battle and self-sacrifice wounded king raise the spirit in me your guidance shall be my victory
I seek your thoughts, you seek my kind shaman, you met the feminine side ancient secrets, ecstasy cries Master of runes, will you show me? My seeker divine, will you join with me?
Come Odin, come wise Odin Keeper of thought and memory seeker of shadows, seeker of truth my thirst for life I offer to you
Come Odin, come one-eyed Odin Lord of battle and self-sacrifice wounded king raise the spirit in me your guidance shall be my victory
You have died in their hearts, you have died in their souls But I, I have always remembered
Come Odin, come wise Odin Keeper of thought and memory seeker of shadows, seeker of truth my thirst for life I offer to you
Come Odin, come one-eyed Odin Lord of battle and self-sacrifice wounded king raise the spirit in me your guidance shall be my victory
(Hagalaz' Runedance - Seeker Divine)
Ask and ye shall receive.

One of my German Friends introduced me to the Uthark system. Anyone here ever used it. I gave it a try in a few workings and I got great results. I know it is not traditional but, it works. So what is your opinion? My Father is from Hungary but he is Somi speaking. My Mother is First nations Canadian Maliseet but the Norse were some of our first trade partners. So we have runes here on stones and such in Maine and Nova Scotia.I would love to learn more espesualy to do with runes and Orgone energy work. Anyone skilled at that?

The Way of Woden, although best expressed in terms of the Germanic tradition to which it belongs and out of which it grows, nevertheless can be universalized in a sense. One does not need to use the name of Woden or the symbolism of the Runes to gain the initiatory benefits the archetype and paradigm of development can offer. The structures involved are unique and might be applied independently of the symbols. In fact I prefer it to be the case with most individuals who are not committed to the way of Woden that they not use the symbols of that Way if they are not committed to it. However, learning the principles of the Way and applying them apart from the symbols can be a source of great reward for those who are unwilling, or unable due to prior commitments in life, to Give themSelves not only to themSelves, but also to the goals of the Great Tradition.

I actually have been getting a lot more out of Freya Aswynns book than the interpretation written by Flowers.
I think that any working that uses devices of shamanic origin needs to have a strong dose of intuition applied. These people learned to use the runes thousands of years ago though experimentation.
"Have you tested them?"
There's a line full of promise! Yes I will happily and respectfully experiment with them.
I am interested in specifically Galdr and Seidr.
I was previously unaware of the singing origins of magic in Seidr practice. According to my sources you sing to create the circle and to project your magics into the ether.
Cool as shit really. I liiiiike that method as I have been using song on an intuitive level for ritual for years.

I intoned Odin's name the other day and used the first two runes. I learned to sing them off of Freya Aswynns website. Within 24 hours I was visited by two astral ravens and the next day as I was hiking on the mountain near my home I stumbled across a horse skeleton. One of the bone fragments looks just like a rattle that I saw in a dream I had 4 years ago. I had a viking looking woman come to me and show me a dance and a rattle. When I awoke I drew a picture of the rattle that she wanted me to make. It is the exact same shape of the bone I took from the skeleton. I have the piece I need to make my rattle! I also retrieved the entire head and some of the vertebrae. I will return soon to retrieve the rest of the skeleton. It will make many rune staves! Jaz.

The runes already present in the Kort'thsalis symbol (that I know of):
Perthro Kenaz Isa Dagaz Ehwaz Mannaz Sowilo Eihwaz Nauthiz Wunjo (reverse) Raidho (reverse) Thurisaz (reverse) Laguz
What a crazy symbol. You can probably spot more if you look for them, some of those can be reversed and a bit twisted but there nonetheless...

I recommend you read some Freya Aswynn and Edred Thorsson, madguten. I think you'll like that stuff. And wihaz.wordpress.com is very good too. You already use the runes a lot, even though you may not know their "official" names or meanings. They're still the same thing I think. I have a feeling they might be, when understood properly, at least as powerful as any sigils we craft or use. They're the building blocks of our cosmos so to speak. Aswynn has a great theory about this which she explains in her book "Northern Mysteries & Magick".

They are both wonderful teachers on the subject.....do you know who Thorrson is? He is Stephen Flowers from the good ol Temple of Set! Hee hee hee! (perhaps that was already mentioned) Anything written by either of them is awesome! I am still following my Wyrd. It led me to my first ever professional rune reading (ie: for money) that I have ever done!!! It was also one of the hardest reads I ever did as It was completely cold. No foreknowledge of the problem at hand...just had the client hold the bag and ask the runes his question silently and boy oh boy did he get his answer....it was not what he wanted to hear. But it was really accurate and really pertained to the question at hand as well as his entire situation. He ended up a bit freaked out that I knew so much about him from looking at 4 runes. Yay! I think the bind rune is a good idea. I personally agree with Freya about Hagal. It is a rune of destruction and change so it has a bad rep, but it is the rune of the witch or magic worker. So is it not just as the left hand path is? Misunderstood and misinterpreted consistently throughout the years? Ok....so Venger, Did you put futhark into your Meta Sigil or was it a happy accident? Either way, much coolness there. Jaz. Ia Odin! Ia Cthulhu!!!

Designed that bindrune today, let's see what comes. It has two Algiz runes (the right one upside-down) from which sprout the two "thorns" of the Thurisaz (the other one pointing to the left and the other right), and the two are connected by the middle line of Hagalaz. To top it off, this can be drawn with SEVEN strokes. In old German gravestones the two Algiz runes can often be found, next to the birth and death dates. Awesome!!!!! I have not made a bind rune yet only sigils. Your work is inspiring me.

A very interesting site about the Nine Worlds, it's basically a travel guide www.cauldronfarm.com/nine/index.htmlAlso did an Yggdrasill reading on the 21st day (spring equinox + full moon), which Aswynn describes in her book... the results: Asgard - Algiz Muspelheim - Dagaz Vanaheim - Ehwaz Svartalfheim - Jera Ljossalfheim - Inguz Midgard - Sowilo Jotunheim - Fehu Hel - Hagalaz Nifelhel - Thurisaz (reversed) It's kind of strange that most of the runes ended up in their "appropriate" places, like Hagalaz in Hel, Dagaz in Muspelheim and Algiz in Asgard for example. I'd like to see this as a kind of "thumbs up" sign, that I'm going in the right direction in the right way... The Thurisaz is a bit worrying, as Nifelhel is supposed to represent the deepest part of the subconscious from which problems originate. Dunno if the reversal really signifies anything. Might point to the fact that I may have lots of repressed (sexual?) feelings, the un-blocking of which could have a very beneficial effect. We'll see.

Here are the runes which can be used to access the Nine Worlds, and the rulers of the worlds, according to Aswynn: 1. Hagalaz - Hel - Hella 2. Isa - Jotunheim - Thrym & Utgard-Loki 3. Eihwaz - Swartalfheim - Modsognir 4. Dagaz - Muspelheim - Surt 5. Nauthiz - Nifelheim - Nidhogg 6. Jera - Midgard - Thor 7. Inguz - Vanaheim - Frey & Freyja 8. Sowulo - Lightalfheim - Frey & Freyja 9. Gyfu/Gebo - Asgard - Odin/Heimdal

The above sketch of the nine worlds kinda reminds me of the tree of life. I have heard that there was a lost Runic Kabbalah, which was very powerfull.
I also feel that to understand the runes better you have to go to the worlds they represent (on an astral level). By exploring the worlds and talking with the gods/rulers of each rune, much wisdom can be gained.
An interresting book i found was Donald Tyson's Soul Flight, which is pretty much a book on astral projection, but it had a nice section on runes.
One thing that is most interresting is where he says that Odin (the shaman) sacrificed himself to Odin (the god) and hung from the tree (of the world) for nine days. From which he "fell" (astral projected downwards) screaming to the roots of Yggdrasil (infernal realms) and recieved the runes.
In all the other forms he gives for astral projection you alway ascend to higher elemental/angelic realms, but the runes seem to be from the infernal realms.
I am in no way saying this is the truth, but for aesthetic value it meshes very well with the Cthulhu Paradigm.
