I just watched this one for the second time today... this is perhaps the best and most visually pleasing Lovecraft film I have seen to date, capturing nicely the message of our Cult and the hideous beauty of Lovecraft's vision. It has lots of darkly humorous scenes, but they make the whole somehow even more terrifying and realistic from my cultist perspective. This is a prophecy of things to come, not just some campy horror flick, my friends! I'm beginning to see a lot of fish-men, everywhere I go...
For those who have not seen this, it is a (very) loose adaptation of The Shadow over Innsmouth story, taking place in a coastal Spanish setting. Numerous references to other HPL stories as well if I'm not mistaken. Professional direction and writing that clearly show the creators know and respect Lovecraft (and the art of filmmaking) thoroughly, very solid acting and beautiful cinematography, along with chilling music and quite gorgeous special effects & costumes considering this is not a big budget Hollywood production.
In other words, I love this one! It may not be the greatest film ever, but a very special one nonetheless. Give it a second try if you disagree, for me it only got better with the second viewing and that usually is a sign of a good film. There's plenty of subtleties that go unnoticed on the first viewing, at least in my case they did.
And Macarena Gómez is so utterly gorgeous as Uxia that she alone makes this required watching for anyone who enjoys female beauty!
Five thumbs up! Oops, I think my robe just slipped... I mean TWO thumbs, I'm a normal human being after all...
