In one of the other threads, the phrase "R'lyeh sunk" stuck out in my head. Is there a correlation between R'lyeh & Atlantis? Are they one and the same? Was R'lyeh patterned after Atlantis or vice versa?

yes, many HPL scholars believe that R'lyeh was fashioned after the lost city of Atlantis. HPL borrowed from many different cultures, using their myths and folklore to enhance the multi-faceted nature of his stories.

In the Tyson Necronomicon, Atlantis had a role very similar to Innsmouth, and they used weapons similar (Or identical) to those of the Elder Things. There was some sort of war between the Deep Ones and the humans, however, and it sunk Atlantis.

Somewhere in your bible, Venger, it says: 'Then suddenly the lands of the pacific sank again, taking with them the frightful stone city of R'lyeh...' And the first thing to cross my mind when I read it was: He's talking about Atlantis. So yes I believe it to be one and the same.

There could also be several sunken lands. Regarding the Atlantis/R'lyeh simularities, i cant say that they cant be the same lands but i feel sceptic because in my mind R'lyeh is in the Pacific ocean and Atlantis in the Atlantic ocean (hence the Atlanti- name). But seeing how the possition, existance and histories of these lands are limited to mystery and wonder, dreams and fantasy, i cannot even begin to rule out any theory regarding the sunken lands. One thing is for sure; Civilizations can fall and islands can sink and what has fallen can rise again.

This is meant for High Priest Satanis only. It is not an ad, it is a statement. I sent unsolicited materials to darrick@cultofcthulhu.net regarding the black-letter John Dee edition of the Necronomicon which is solely dedicated to the Old Ones and the missing symbols from modern versions which I copied from foreign editions of the text. I currently have all the editions of the Necronomicon in my possession with the exception of the Tyson edition. The only one's I could not find have been lost to time which are the latin edition, greek edition, and arabic original. I thought that you might be interested in that information.

One other thing, the diagrams also contain two charts of planetary hours that show the relationship between the seven philosophical planets and the hours of the day.

Another curious note, has anyone read the Emerald Tablets of Thoth, the Atlantean? It runs along the same lines as the Necronomicon as far as "gates" goes and mentions a creature that has the skin of a snake, walks on two feet like a man, and has the appearance of some fish/human hybrid that was summoned using advanced black magick. The creatures according to Thoth could make themselves physically look like humans through the use of crystals although he didn't say how.

yep, i got it. thanks. will look it over sometime this week.
it is my belief that no published Necronomicon could ever hope to compete with what HPL had in mind. but that doesn't mean these books are useless. if the magician Wills it, then real sorcery can be done!
