It depends on which Necronomicon everyone is looking for. The one I work from is not in line with the current of the Cult of Cthulhu; that does not mean that there are not others that are.

The Necronomicon is real, in that it is made to manifest by drawing it out of you, your Gnosis. Any madman that takes his internal vision and puts it to paper, creates the Necronomicon himself. All versions are 'real', as belief is reality.

The necronomicon meme is an entity unto itself. Kind of like the Fraternas Saturni's GOTOS.

That is exactly it. Every version of the Necronomicon is part of the greater whole. Everyone who uses it creates another sentence, page, or chapter in the volume that lives & breathes with a life of its own. This has been my belief from the beginning & continues to grow stronger the longer I work with it. I can't wait until the one I am scribing sees print; my own small expression of gratitude for a work that has literally dominated the better portion of my life.

The necronomicon meme is an entity unto itself. Kind of like the Fraternas Saturni's GOTOS. This is true, to a degree. Many believe there is only ONE original Necronomicon, the very tome described in the Lovecraft fictions. The biggest perpetrator of this urban myth, is SIMON.

I don't believe that this was his intent, Cora'Sahn. In his book 'Dead Names', he adamantly states the contrary many times. The point is kind of moot as Simon's Nec has very little to do with the Mythos & that is what we are concerned with here in the CoC.

Dead Names was my favorite of all of his books on the subject. I understand his position on this, but this really doesn't matter much - its what the reader believes. He perpetrates the mystery, weirdness, and secrecy and this leads people to believe that HE has been exposed to the REAL one and only Necronomicon. He uses this to his advantage.
I don't feel its Moot, as Cultists draw from all sorts of mythos writers. I myself like to keep things in-line with HPL's stories, but this doesn't mean that cultists won't draw from Simon among other authors.

The Simon is the core of my personal practice, but I work with the Mythos as well. I only call it moot to avoid raising yet another debate on the boards as our illustrious Ipsissimus has made it clear what his position is with regards to the Nec & its place within the CoC; its one of the few things I try to respect, lol!
As a side note, I've been working on a tarot spread using Tyson's deck with the diagram from his '13 Gates' book as the model. My initial experiments have yielded good results though I am still deciphering the exact interactions between the various 'wards' of the 'city'.

Awake...the fuck up! It's my understanding, that VS agrees that the Nec is pulled out of the cultist, and is quite real as I have posited. This has always been my personal position, especially with regards to the role it plays in the CoC. Cultists often collaborate, adding to each other's personal Tomes (as well as any writing VS has published himself). To say that Simon's version is moot, makes little sense. I think cultists gain inspiration from many sources - other writers included.

Believe me, I don't feel Simon's is moot; it is the foundation of my practice. And if VS has altered his view of the work, then I've gained a greater measure of respect for him. I agree with this view of the Necronomicon as a living breathing entity that each one who touches it leaves their mark upon. My remarks were inspired by VS's statements from some time ago which stated that the CoC's works were an evolution of what was contained in the Simon thus rendering it irrelevant. I myself have found it to be anything but, but as I've stated before this is VS's show & out of respect, I generally don't broach the subject when I post here.

I understand. I believe this point of view has changed as recently as this year. We have discussed using various author's use of the mythos (Simon among them), as they are in use by individual cultists (obviously). As far as pointing to one holy book as the REAL Necronomicon, I believe he stands firm by his opinion on this matter.

As far as I've known Priestess Cora'Sahn's statement regarding the Necronomicon as coming from the cultist is correct. Using any of the published versions, though in some ways advantageous, is often as not limiting. Tyson's confesses itself as fiction and Simon's as mysterious as it is simply doesn't feel complete enough, dread enough, to be all that the name must by it's very unature require it to be.
