Now that we have 6 years under our belt, I felt it was high time to expand our ranks. Now don't be discouraged if you suddenly find yourself multiple steps from becoming a Priest of R'lyeh instead of just one or two degrees away. This just means advancement can be more rapid for those who really put everything into the Cult of Cthulhu.
Here are the new degrees, with path signifiers, also known as the Hierarchy of Madness...
Messenger of the Outer Angles: An introduction to the Cult. This degree describes the casual Cultist, those who support the CoC without wanting to get too involved with Viridian Magic, religious aspects, and administration. However, a Messenger may join a CoC Grotto. There is no questionnaire or application to be submitted before a Messenger of the Outer Angles is recognized.
This is the foundation or base of the ziggurat. Those who take the lowest risk receive the least reward. Messengers are encouraged to join in discussions, Grottoes, Temples, and other Cult affairs, but are not expected to do so.
There is no limit to the number of Messengers permitted.
Herald of the Old Gods: This is an active member of the Cult. They have read our doctrine, know what we’re about, and indentify with our cause. Heralds are assumed to have an interest in Viridian Sorcery, religious aspects, and administration. There is a three question application which must be approved by a Priest of R’lyeh or the High Priest before acceptance.
This degree represents the lower structure of the ziggurat. A Herald of the Old Gods may lead a Grotto and manage a Temple. Upon becoming a Herald, a magical Cult name is chosen.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 666.
Wizard of the Terrible Darkness: A disciplined and effective leader. This is a Cultist who has decided to become seriously involved in the Cult of Cthulhu. As an officer of the CoC, the duties and responsibilities are greater but so are the rewards. One cannot become a Wizard of the Terrible Darkness without the approval of the High Priest.
This degree represents the lower middle portion of the ziggurat. A 500 word essay must be submitted to the High Priest before a Wizard is accepted. A WotTD may also join the Council of Wizards, a managerial body of dedicated Cultists.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 333.
Seeker of S'ngac, the Violet Colored Gas: A Seeker desires to forge his own personal path within the Cthulhu Cult. A Wizard who has proven himself over and over again may attain this degree. At this point, Cultists can no longer apply for a position; they must be awarded it through outstanding efforts.
A Seeker represents the central portion of the ziggurat.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 111.
Oneironaut of the Frozen Wastes: An Oneironaut travels the dream lands and astral space. The varied dimensions of this universe and beyond are his domain. An Oneironaut explores alternatives to existing in this world.
This degree represents the ziggurat's upper middle.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 93.
Visionary of the Nigrescent Feast: A Visionary disposes of that which is unwanted. Through the use of Viridian Sorcery, he executes, assassinates, and destroys all obstacles, all hindrances, all opponents to the Cult's Awakening. Visionaries of the Nigrescent Feast have attained a position of power and influence not only in our earthly prison-world, but beyond.
This degree forms the upper portion of the ziggurat.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 32.
Priest of Unimagined Horrors: This is where the Priesthood begins. Cultists who have made it this far have joined the inner-circle and become a singularity of focus. A Priest of Unimagined Horrors has witnessed the depths which our path takes us. There is no going back at this point. The Priesthood is a dedicated body of Men, no longer puppets to the lesser gods of the earth.
The first degree of Priesthood represents the upper tier.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 23.
Priest of R'lyeh: A head officer of the Cult. Such a high degree of initiation requires a lifetime commitment to our Teaching. A Priest of R'lyeh is involved in bringing the Emerald Kingdom to earth. To attain this degree, one must pass a thorough examination determined by the High Priest.
A Priest of R’lyeh represents the ziggurat’s top or ceiling.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 9.
High Priest: The religion's current High Priest is Cult of Cthulhu founder and leader Venger As'Nas Satanis. He is responsible for making sure things run smoothly; he provides direction and assistance when needed.
This degree represents the sacrificial altar crouched upon the highest level of the ziggurat. Also known as the holy place from which to call upon the Ancient Ones.
The maximum number of individuals holding this degree at any one time shall be 3.
Ipsissimus: From a Work perspective, the Ipsissimus either has reached, or is fast approaching, the designation of Man Number 7. Also known as the priest behind the priest behind the priest. His thoughts, feelings, words, actions, and beliefs are almost beyond the comprehension of the profane. Ordinary man is blind and deaf to the deeper levels of his understanding. An Ipsissimus has the most freedom from limitations; he paradoxically lives in an uneasy balance between Universe A and Universe B.
The being who attains such an exalted rank becomes the Cthulhu Cult’s struggle personified… liberation from oppression, embodying the very bilious green, meta-progressive span of evolution, the folding of space and time, a gateway towards Godhood. Certain individuals may see the Ipsissimus transformed from instrument of the Great Old Ones to the systemic protocol integral to the self-developing organism that is man; upholding the covenant, a living God (or approximation of that preternatural state).
This degree is recognition for placing one’s religion above all else… up to and including his very life.
Only 1 individual shall hold this, the highest of all possible degrees.
Along with one's degree, a Cultist should also choose a path. There are three paths which indicate a particular persuasion, attunement, and bias. Such individual signifiers relate to either an Adversarial, Dreaming, or Esoteric path. If we can clearly see in what direction a Cultist is going, then his brothers and sisters are better able to understand that Cultist.
The Adversarial path relates to a Satanic current.
The Dreaming path relates to a strictly Lovecraftian current.
The Esoteric path relates to The Work or what is known as the Fourth Way and Gurdjieff Teaching.
As an example, if a Cultist attains the degree of Herald of the Old Gods who found us because of his interest in dreams, the Mythos, and desires to make progress in a primarily Lovecraftian paradigm, then he should use the title Dreaming Herald of the Old Gods. Likewise, a Seeker of S'ngac, the Violet Colored Gas who comes from a Satanic background should use the signifier Adversarial in his title like so, Adversarial Seeker of S'ngac, the Violet Colored Gas. After three months of attaining a new degree, a Cultist should choose one of the three paths, adding it to his title and consciousness.

I love the direction that the Cult is taking, I'm excited to be here to experience it all.
High Priest Satanis, I have a few questions:
How long would you like to see someone being a Herald of the Old Gods before applying to become a Wizard of the Terrible Darkness?
Are their some examples that you can give us to what you deem to be a 'disciplined and effective leader'? What would you like to see from Heralds of the Old Gods who wish to advance to become Wizards of the Terrible Darkness?
In what way can a Wizard of the Terrible Darkness prove him/herself to be able to be elevated to Seeker of S'ngac, the Violet Colored Gas?
Oneironaut of the Frozen Wastes description confuses me. Does a Cultist have to master astral projection and dream magic to achieve this rank? If not, what does a Seeker of S'ngac, the Violet Colored Gas have to do to be elevated?
Where do the honory ranks, such as Knight of the Chartreuse Void, fit within the new Cult system? Would they be 'ranked' above Heralds of the Old Gods? Above Wizards of the Terrible Darkness? On par with Priests of Unimagined Horrors?
Are the paths concrete? When someone declares a path are they then stuck as it were? Personally I come to the Cult of Cthulhu from a strong Satanic background, I'm attracted to the Cult due to its Lovecraftian roots, and I aspire to learn and live the Fourth Way. How would one such as I choose a path then?
Please don't view any of my questions contentiously - I only wish to learn the answers to I can plan my short, medium, and long term goals within the Cult.

I'm glad. Just thought that aspect of the CoC had been in stasis too long. Those are great questions, let me get right to them.
The best answer is whenever that Cultist or even prospective Cultist believes he is ready. For instance, some individuals have been active in the occult scene for years. So, I wouldn't have a problem seeing an immediate ascension to Wizard of the Terrible Darkness. However, there's nothing wrong with waiting a year before applying to become a Wizard. Longevity is key. No one wants to see a Cultist shoot up the ziggurat only to jump off the top like a lemming when they get bored or restless or self-destructive.
The degree of WotTD is an excellent proving ground to see just how much potential a Cultist has within our illustrious order.
A disciplined and effective leader should be assertive, patient, mature, diplomatic, easy going about the little things while being uncompromising about that which is essential, and able to consider multiple sides of an issue.
Initiative. Take matters into your own hands; be active. Don't wait for something to happen, make it happen! Also, if you have any special skills then let other Cultists know so they can make use of your unique talents.
The same efforts that allowed you to become a Wizard of the Terrible Darkness should allow you to ascend to Seeker of S'ngac, the Violet Colored Gas. Wizards who stand out, who impress those of a higher degree will eventually be asked to accept such a position. A Seeker needs to not just immerse themselves in our paradigm, but to create their own paradigmal strain. It wouldn't hurt to regularly publish a paper, article, or essay.
While each higher degree has a specialty, the farther one ascends the more prestige, influence, and power that Cultist will wield. Developments in astral projection and dream magic should be significant. An Oneironaut of the Frozen Wastes begins to receive communications from Universe B.
Concerning ascensions, it's risk versus reward. The more you put yourself out there, the more you give, sacrifice, and intentionally suffer, the better return you'll receive in energy. Energy can be manipulated in all sorts of ways; it is the currency of power. Risk big when possible and the Great Old Ones shall caress you with a favorable tentacle.
The honorary ranks are outside the degree system, which is why they can be given to non-Cultists. They denote accomplishment, but have no appreciable significance within the Hierarchy of Madness.
Very few things in the CoC are concrete. No, a Cultist is not stuck in one path. If a Cultist truly believes that his way lies in another direction than from where he started, then that Cultist should choose what best fits him. It is highly recommended that paths be "switched out" at the time of a Cultist's next ascension.
It is difficult to pursue one path, let alone two or three. All Cultists are part of an Adversarial, Dreaming, and Esoteric current because the CoC embodies this trinity. Nevertheless, a single road will get you farther than traveling two or three simultaneously.
I have to remain impartial and conscious of all three at once as High Priest. This triad of attention slows me down considerably. You will make more progress by narrowing your focus.
On naming a path, consider where you came from, where you are, and where you are going. If you have trouble deciding, then imagine where your efforts will take you in next few months. Each path means a specific type of work. Please take your time in choosing. As it is Lovecraft's birthday on August 20th, set that as your date to decide.
No, the degrees are for men and women equally. I just like sticking to the traditional masculine pronoun of he, him, his. Down the road, perhaps we could add something to denote certain feminine qualities...
On the contrary, these are the exact type of questions I was hoping for. Thanks for allowing me to clear things up.

This is truly amazing Master Satanis, When I read this thread earlier I got very excited, I finally feel like we are really going far with the CoC. I'm going to be a little crazy by saying this but since I'm a very big StarWars fan I must, I look at us as the Sith, and right hand paths the Jedi..But we really need this to grow and become Stronger. I am very enthusiastic about the new degree system. I feel it adds a lot more depth to the Cult, as well as something for members to greater strive towards. I'm excited to see where this will bring others within the Cult as well as the Cult itself.
I'm also very fond of the ziggurat model and believe it's ver befitting of this organization.

"Absolutely bad ass!" Lord Satanis is truly inspired. The coloring of rank helps me when Im looking at whats from management.
#1 Messenger: Perfect.
#2 Heralds: Perfect.
#3 Wizards: at this level I see more responsibility down the line. As the COC grows, this position might have a 'regional' off shoot that handles multiple temples in a given 'county'.
#4 Seeker: This is someone very qualified, who brings something very important to the COC table in regards to the COC philosophical paradigm. Probably the same level as a Wizard/Priest o.U.H, in regards to authority.
#5 Oneironaut: They handle the Astral & extra-dimensional shit. The time they spend in these other realms might make them a bit off beat. But their counsel is of utmost importance to any level of the COC.
#6 Visionary: This is the CIA/secret service aspect. Pretty straight forward enforcer type work. Not needed yet.
#7Priest o.U.H: Lots of responsibility is headed there way. I see a 'regional' off shoot at this point 'southern California'(from L.A. on down). Maybe a state representative.
#8 Priests o.R: Apostles.
#9 Is what is.
Having the cultist pick a path is very important. It allows us to know where that cultist is coming from in regards to his/her paradigm. The ranking allows for our differing talents to glorify the COC in different ways. Pretty sweet Master Satanis. Is my summation to general or callous, let me know? I enjoy delving into subjects:) In fact I would have liked to dive further.

With regards to the path that a Cultist must choose I am deeply considering the Lovecraftian current, or the Satanic one. I'm leaning more toward the Lovecraftian current since these days I've returned to Dark Paganism and honor a pantheon of Dark Gods and Goddesses including Lucifer and Lilith, Hecate and Anubis... So I guess I'm going to go with The Lovecraftian current... Hmm. I suppose I can always change it later.

Id like to put my focus in to Oneironaut. Ive astral projected a couple times & loved it. Id be realy good at it. Ive started to paint again, & want to do my room with Cthulhu type tapestries. The atmosphere would help with focus.
The key will be to hone in on Cthulhu himself. It would be pretty terrifying at first. Probably the first few times. But like Lord Satanis him self, its just a matter of confronting it within your self. The truth of it. But Oneironaut is my goal. The fourth Way is perfect for the preparation.

Know that the efforts, presentation, understanding, and real world results must be of consistently superlative quality before such a degree may be acquired. Absolutely Master Satanis. Im still learning the computer ways:(
That very night I dreamed of Cthulhu. I cant remember it completely, but it was quite surreal. I normally take the time to remember. But was rushed.
The dream was me angerly pushing past the investigative characters from the game. Doctor, mobster, scientist, all of them were there & they were in my way. They were trying to destroy Cthulhu & I was trying to run past them. As if to obtain something from Cthulhu. It was pretty rad.
Its possible I tapped into the cults akashic record + my own imagination fueled by the post I wrote. I might be able to access our cultists vibrational level (imagination level) instinctively. Hopefully.
Either way, keep sending all your prayers Cthulhu's way. If I dont find the Cthulhu stream Im looking for, at least I can sift through our combined imaginations & belief in Cthulhu. Could come across so pretty fantastic stuff.

Along with the Priests of R'lyeh, I'm working on an updated and expanded version of Cthulhu Cult, book I of our bible. Hopefully, it will be up on the website by August 20th.
In the meantime, Master Xeno and I have been working on a revised degree system.
Oneironaut of the Frozen Wastes: An Oneironaut travels the dream lands and astral space. The varied dimensions of this universe and beyond are his domain. An Oneironaut explores alternatives to existing in this world.
This degree represents the ziggurat's upper middle.

I believe this selection will prevent the "coloring book" appearance which some forum members feared. Cultists of a particular Grotto and those with an honorary title should consult me if they want to use some other hue.
As always, please post your thoughts, suggestions, and comments. This is a trial run or soft opening before the new Cthulhu Cult is unleashed upon the world.

So for higher ranks such as "priest of R'yleh" is there an age limit to attain that rank? Reason i ask is that in 3 days ill be 17 and priest of R'yleh is the rank i wish to achieve in the CoC. I dont care on how long it takes or how much i need to learn but that is a goal of mine and i know that it will take time but look how long the old ones have been waiting to return that is were my patience will be unlimited! Very interesting. This makes a great deal more sense than the original hierarchy. I think only having the five ranks initially made things too nebulous; stretching out the ascension process is guaranteed to produce a much better developed Cultist & priest. It also serves to better weed out those not prepared for the responsibilities of the upper echelons.
A question of minor note, you stated that one ascends through the ranks due to their effort & contribution to the CoC. Is there an internal system of education that will prepare the cultist for the increasing amount of esoteric responsibilities in the upper ranks?
I only state this to illuminate the fact that while dedication & effort to the greater glory of the Cult is an excellent & noteworthy pursuit, its not going to make one a Walker of the Outer Spheres or a Viridian Assassin. Is the development of the necessary skill sets the sole responsibility of the cultist, or do the resources exist within the Cult to assist in the process?
I am not assuming your exclusion as a resource, Lord Satanis, but your duties as High Priest would seem to make individual instruction rather difficult. It might be a good idea to create a formal mentorship program among the upper echelons to facilitate the ascension of those who desire it & are found acceptable to yourself & your immediate subordinates.

Obtaining a Priesthood degree would require a Cultist to be at least 18 years of age. Very interesting. This makes a great deal more sense than the original hierarchy. I wasn't referring to my own personal ascension. We already know that as long as the those requirements exist, I am likely to remain a Herald. However, am I to understand from your response that you are not interested in continuing the conversations we were having about requirements at the higher levels with me because of that? Because I won't pledge my personal loyalty to you, you are not interested in what leadership ideas and administrative qualities that I might bring into the CoC? Awake! Apsara Kamalli Esoteric Herald of the Old Gods Cult of Cthulhu I believe that was a misunderstanding. No, I didn't mean that I wasn't interested in hearing or pursuing your ideas. I welcome all suggestions from any and all Cultists. For now, those three things are all I'm working with, in the interests of keeping things minimalistic. But that doesn't mean I'm not open to other ideas.
I could also re-phrase the loyalty stipulation to something more esoteric and palatable such as a promise to trust in the Teacher or something to that effect... After all, even loyalty oaths can end in betrayal.

Thank you for clarifying. I understand your need to keep things minimalistic since you are essentially moderating the board on your own, as well as participating in the many other discussion groups you are involved in. I could also re-phrase the loyalty stipulation to something more esoteric and palatable such as a promise to trust in the Teacher or something to that effect... After all, even loyalty oaths can end in betrayal.
That sounds more like something I could understand and relate to. Lord Satanis, we share many of the same esoteric beliefs. It is very true that betrayal is always possible regardless of what is spoken otherwise, and at any time, I could have given you the lip service required in order to keep my WoTD title. But, that's not my style. In my opinion, pledging my undying personal loyalty is something I just don't feel is necessary to do to anyone other than myself, especially since the the idea of "loyalty" can have a subjective interpretation. For example, if you publicly disagree with me on an idea, you could view it as being loyal to me by assisting me to remain awakened. However, if I'm not in the right frame of mind to "listen" to what you are saying, and I react mechanically to your insight, I may consider this a betrayal of loyalty. The "right" answer is subjective and could fall somewhere in the middle of both options. However, the idea of loyalty almost seems to bring an unnecessary emotional side to it. This is just my humble opinion. How do the other cultists feel about that? Should someone that is interested in ascension within the organization be required to pledge their undying, personal loyalty to High Priest Satanis? Or, should the pledge be focused on the agreement that they are placing trust in the ideas and teachings of the Teacher, High Priest Satanis? Remember yourself, for the emerald kingdom is at hand! I know in other religions, they demand a verbal contract of loyalty. Its not unreasonable. But to call ones self a Cthulhu cultist? That's pretty specific. I wouldn't want to follow people in authority who weren't loyal by oath to Venger. So for leadership I say absolutely.
