Accepted Forms of ‘Individualism’
Modern societies are set-up to accommodate and appeal to not only the mass collective but also to individualism. But the forms that accepted ‘individualism’ takes are often a sheath to hide the workings of a mass psyche. It is the ‘allowed liberty’ that is provided to the modern person in pursuit of material gains as long as they remain within the parameters of their established society. Liberty, then, is an expression of mobility within a pre-described system: it does not denote liberty external to the system. Examples are the rock clichés that the mainstream media love to promote and adorn their front pages. Notables are the raging antics of destroying hotel rooms and throwing televisions out of the window, behaviour that later morphed into copycat corporate rock PR. In essence, such ‘rebels’ are allowed, and even encouraged, because their antics sell records. Rebelliousness in these forms is thus another contribution to a consumerist society, albeit through a different manner. And today there are many forms in which individualism is allowed to manifest as long as it plays within a pre-described system.

If one is uniquely individualized he will appear as a 'freak' in society or a 'rebellious rebel'of some sort. ONewoh defies the Status Quo of the times. But the 'indivdual' in the movies and TV do not work in real life- For to be a true indivdual, one cannot be concern about other's direct opinion, nor ifit 'sells' the next Coke. And if he or she is too much 'out of agreement' with the Status Quo he or she will be 'outcasted' and 'labled' negatively, to the point they are a ghost and don't exist anymore. If one is uniquely individualized he will appear as a 'freak' in society or a 'rebellious rebel'of some sort. Very rarely is he seen as a normal or super-normal person. A individual defies the Status Quo of the times. But the 'individual' in the movies and TV do not work in real life- For to be a true individual, one cannot be concern about other's direct opinion, nor what 'sells' the next Coke. And if he or she is too much 'out of agreement' with the Status Quo he or she will be 'outcasted' and 'labeled' negatively, even to the point they are a ghost and don't exist anymore. One is 'individualized' by choices and preferences, but he still must stay within the parameters of what is considered 'normal' or 'accepted dress and behavior'. A person is as indvidualized as he is private and alone. Any contact with another person or group of people will require some compromise of the individual. Brewster-Author of "Psychic-Clearing".

What I really liked about this Article is the Arrested Development section. Truly we must live on a prison planet.
