"The Work teaches that there are two Higher Centres in us, termed Higher Emotional Centre and Higher Intellectual Centre. These are distinct from the lower Emotional and Intellectual Centres. The two Higher Centres are fully developed and constantly working, but we do not hear them. Their vibrations are too fine. The lower centres, unless developed, are not tuned in to them. That is to say, we cannot hear the messages that come through them from higher levels of consciousness. Now we know that it is a principle in the Work-teaching that what is at a higher level perceives and comprehends what is at a lower level, but that what is at a lower level cannot perceive or comprehend what is at a higher level. We see the same thing in visible life, which reflects the invisible things of higher meanings. A stupid person cannot comprehend an intelligent person. The lower does not comprehend the higher. A monkey cannot comprehend a man. In the same way, we could not understand an awakened, Conscious Man, a Man No. 7. He would be quite different from us. The disciples could not understand Christ (who was "No. 8 Man"). We suppose a Conscious Man to be some sort of greater and more impressive ordinary man. We cannot at first easily realize that he is another kind of man - a completely NEW MAN."
~ Psychological Commentaries on the Teadching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, Volume 5 by Maurice Nicoll
Aside from "center" being spelled differently, what do you take away from the quoted passage... anything? What's new to you? What's familiar? Do you agree or disagree? Why? Can you relate this lesson fragment to your own life?

Since the key aim is to develop a crystallized 'I' which is the centers harmonized (and more permanent), this quote is offering reasoning as to why the lower emotional/intellectual center doesn't seem to be in harmony with the higher. There is a break in communication.
This reasoning may be the catalyst for attempting the exercises Gurdjieff offers as a way to complete the circuit. A possible solution to the problem.
One could certainly argue that Gurdjieff is misappropriating methods in use in psychology but I think the packaging is more appealing to those who choose the occult (semantics really).
Having studied various parables from the Hindus (which attempt to explain the human condition, and offer ways to exceed it), I can see the appeal to bringing the Eastern philosophies to the West. The problem is, much will get lost in translation.
In this case, calling the crystallization 'soul', is a concept that has been muddied by poor translation for thousands of years. People imagine a tangible ethereal body that inhabits our biological form as if its a thing that isn't really us...Our essence. This imagining can be the very thing that is preventing crystallization in the first place.
Perhaps, and this is just my opinion here, the idea that Old Ones are real beings in another realm is in use in the same way. This is why I prefer to use them as symbolic representations of what we are to become, ourselves realized. Using the ideas laid down by Lovecraft, man can not relate to them. Their form and language would drive him over the brink of insanity and into a world that doesn't make sense (filled with non-euclidean angles).
The parallels between the teachings of The Fourth Way and the Cthulhu Mythos have always been appealing to me for this reason.
The Enneagram and sigils used in various occult paradigms are accomplishing the same thing but perhaps with different key aims.
Self-deification, Power and Autonomy are the key aims of the LHP (as written by various occult writers) but I often wonder if they truly understand what that means exactly.
In this case, if you strive to become a divinity (much like the Mythos gods) then you have to have some point of reference to know that you've achieved it. Otherwise, the phrase is rendered meaningless. The Fourth Way offers some parameters to work within. The mythos provides the rich visualization to see yourself there.
{Great example by the way, using Christ and his Disciples. I couldn't agree more.}
One ocean, many boats.
"He is the unseen seer, the unheard hearer,....Other than he there is no seer, other than he there is no hearer,...He is your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal" -Brhadaranyaka Upanisha

Do you honestly think that what you call your 'self' is the real essence of who you are?
Cthulhu lays dead but dreaming...The fabricated reality it lives in, believing itself to be awake; it isn't until the sorcerers of this world jerk it awake, that it realizes it's been dead for aeons and it's pissed. Wouldn't you be? Shouldn't you be?

It seems to me, Nozick had it all wrong. While there are ample reasons not to plug-in, people do so without True Will. They don't know they've been assimilated. They are too busy having experiences for the sake of having them.
It's not as if we read a book and it scrubs programming with more programming. It does take effort on the part of the reader, even if the author can figure out a way to needle in his ideas.

I like "We suppose a Conscious Man to be some sort of greater and more impressive ordinary man. We cannot at first easily realize that he is another kind of man." We should not extrapolate !
For me the rest is familiar and I agree.
Why ? Because I experienced it. For 3 minutes, one full damned fucking year ago (hope this sentence is at least half correct ^^) But I know I can do it, I'll never give up and I'll awake again, by Cthulhu !

We must make efforts, otherwise we become apathetic and hollow. What efforts? It's highly individualized, which is why Venger created a mentorship with specific key aims in mind. It it his hope, that some of the more experienced cultists can guide initiates.
It is a struggle, but with the right method the Work can produce results.

You also have the benefit of using the forum, Social Network, and private email to discuss obstacles, record your efforts, and exchange ideas with the fellowship.

You might peruse our Collective Works area on the social network here: cultofcthulhu.wikidot.com/ It may help with getting a feel for the Fourth Way, if you haven't had opportunity to read any of the source books by Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, Nicholls, etc.
The link includes resources for initiates to dive in, to include external sites to Audio versions of the Lovecraft stories, and lectures.
Another useful resource is Venger's youtube page, which is also linked on the Social Network for ease of use.

Then of course the main website for other writing by VS
wwwcultofcthulhu.net
I would recommend utilizing a new thread for your postings, so we can converse there as well as get feedback from other members.
Feel free to ask questions. I know it's a lot of material. We do have threads dedicated to discussing each of the tomes if you care to chime in on those. Take it one subject at a time.

Diving right in is more important than one would guess. While preparation is helpful, don't let that become just another excuse. Start wherever you can, whenever you can. Why are you not living your dream life this very second? If your ideal self is far away, then there are specific reasons for this. Let's discuss the discrepancy before it's too late and your attention drifts to something else. So many sleepers get excited about the Cult of Cthulhu for a few days or weeks... only to become disenchanted when they realize that struggling to Awaken is a lot of work.
As Yrreiht mentioned, not everything can be extrapolated. When an idea or system or man has ascended to an entirely new Octave, then we cannot conceptualize things in the same way. A leap of faith (and consciousness) is required. Just as Dread Cthulhu is not just like us but better, Man #5 is of a different order than Man #4.
Anything else? Read the passage again. What else can you take from it? What else is obscured?

According to me, a conscious man will be mocked by 90% of the sleepers, because he is different.
There is a good new here : "The two Higher Centres are fully developed and constantly working, but we do not hear them. Their vibrations are too fine. The lower centres, unless developed, are not tuned in to them." That's means once you ear them, you got it !

CS That is a good and interesting question. Why do we focus on how others see us, how our fellow machines view the Work? It's a natural phenomenon. When something is different, it's put under a microscope. Divergence from the norm is disturbing, and disturbing things are noticeable. For a select few, encountering the eldritch is a shock to the system... necessitating deep analysis. For most, unfortunately, it's something to gawk at, to mock temporarily before numbing out to ordinary life.

"When the soul turns round, it finds its proper place and begins to exercise its proper functions inwardly, which have to do with the reception of meaning from Higher Centres. The Personality cannot receive messages from Higher Centres, and if it did, could not understand them because the language of Higher Centres has nothing of Time and Space in it, and is, therefore, not logical as we understand logic. It is not formatory. But the soul can receive messages and new meanings.
In the case of a man, the soul is female. In the case of a woman, it is male. A superficial shallow person's soul is not developed. All sorts of traps and pitfalls centre on these simple facts. One thing, at least, can be understood here, and that is that a man successful in external life cannot proceed straight on in the same way to developing a relationship to Higher Centres. Nor can a woman. With the man or the woman a new start has to be made - and in fact a reversal - and quite new ideas taken in and thought about, and quite new kinds of efforts made. But one of the great difficulties is to wrest the soul away from being identified with the things of life. When it is so identified it is the point of greatest intensity entering into the indentification and makes it difficult to break. When, through self-observation, which is observation of one's inner world, and other work, the soul is partly turned round away from the things of external life and its appetites and its commerce with inferior 'I's, it may begin to pick up meaning coming from higher levels and develop. If it remains glued to the senses as, say, to a person, this will not happen. It will be unable to change its direction. The person then lives and dies and misses the mark. He has not completed himself. But if a man or a woman becomes related both to the external and internal worlds aright they are not half men or half women any longer. They are completed. They are whole men and whole women.
When the rich young man asked how he could attain eternal life, Christ said: "If thou wouldst become complete sell what thou hast and follow me." (Matthew xix.21). Do you imagine this merely means that he had to walk about trailing in the dust after Christ? No, it meant he had to undergo a completely new development, in a new direction, inwardly, making passive all he had got so far by counting it of no value. He seems to have had a good opinion of himself."

VS Nice text, I like the word complete. It summarize a lot of things. Here we find our worst enemy, identification, and our best friend, self-observation. So my soul is female ? What does it means ? I'd like to know more about this, may be it is about completion, male + female = complete.

"For many years before I met this Work, I was Jung's pupil in Zurich. One of the useful things he taught was that we all cast a psychological shadow and that the beginning of the way to internal evolution lay in making the shadow gradually conscious.
The shadow is the part of us that we are not conscious of, but must - with pain to both pride and vanity, which is conscious suffering - eventually make conscious. It is absolutely necessary to face this shadow if we are serious. Of course, it alters our idea of ourselves very much. This shadow, which is in everyone, can make havoc in our lives, as long as we are unconscious of it. As a part of our Being that we do not acknowledge, it attracts much that seems incomprehensible in our Life, owing to our not accepting it.
A man without a shadow would be fully conscious to himself. He would have suffered usefully."

Wow ! this quote is a great one. Totally true, known by experience.
When we speak about self-observation, isn't it obvious, crystal-clear that self-observation must be honest and must include all of you ? Let's hope there are not too many of us here who prefer to ignore the shadow.
I saw my shadow, and I understood where it come from : education, influences & moral developing a personality. This shadow is on the part of us that our personality do not want because it's "bad".
Here again the LHP is making a powerful combination with the 4th way by inciting to reject the moral.
Then what is in the shadow is accepted, the buffers are exploding, the personality disintegrate, and the shadow dissipate. Then what was in the shadow either is taking its right place, either is transformed or disappear.
I would relate the work of facing the shadow with the work of getting rid of the buffers, in both cases the contradiction appears, painful but useful.
This can be related to the previous quote, it is also about completeness.
Hail Cthulhu !

I've studied Jung for years, the concluding statement is TRUTH.
There's a very simple and easy to read book I can recommend to bottom-line a lot of Jung's work. I'm not gonna lie, its a dry read but it's short and to the point.
It's called Dark-side of the light-chasers. www.amazon.com/Dark-Side-Light-Chasers/dp/1594485259/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326982641&sr=8-1
I was exposed to it a number of years ago, during a women's retreat. I found my knowledge of this subject exceeded this book, but it was useful to the other women who were just starting out with this type of study. We had a book study, and group discussion.
I think Jung's shadow work runs parallel with understanding the reactive mind (see Dianetics), in that when you see something ugly in another person, its really the ugly you identify in yourself. Instead of using a mirror, Jung uses a shadow because this is exactly what it is, the shadow you see casted as you chase the light (illumination & awareness).
It's actually the message, in my poem I wrote a few years ago called Reflections.
Sitting by the shore, gazing into the still water. I reach my right-hand within, reaching into myself. My reflection. With my left-hand I hold a scepter. My dominion. The wind blows through my hair, the moon above and reflected below. My reflection. Voices carry, I hear the whispers and the dread in the air. What I pull out of the water, out of myself… is you. You see yourself in me, a mirror. Your reflection. I am every person you have ever met. I am them, and I am you. Look at me, what do you see? Do my eyes make you fearful? I reach for you, you hesitate and step back. Are you afraid? What are you afraid of? I walk towards you, you step back. At the edge now, will you allow yourself to fall? What do you see? Do you see things in me, that are you? One step forward, you take a step back. Falling, falling, falling… Into my reflection.
This is something we should all work on, continually. Even being aware that you are 'reacting' from a place of shadow, doesn't mean our impulses have been cured. We often deny attributes we hold in our personality, that seem to be part of essence. For example, I can't stand being interrupted when I talk. BUT, I'm aware that I'm an interrupter. As much as I've combed it back, I still do it. It's that compulsion I have to say what I'm thinking right away, when I should allow the person to finish speaking and wait my turn to speak. My mind races, and I'm afraid I'll lose the thought by the time they finish (which sometimes occurs). So, I work at slowing my mind down a bit, and using self-disciplines to become a better listener. I've made strides in this area, but I still work at it. So, when someone interrupts me, and I immediately become irritated or enraged, its because I'm seeing the attribute of myself, in the person interrupting me.
I work at it.

Yes, indeed. We do need to face our shadow, the dark side within. Very succinct, wickedbutterfly666. Exalt!Accept the shadow, explode the buffers, and disintegrate the personality. I wish it was as easy as you describe, but yes... it sounds like that's the direction such things take. Even if that is so, then what of our shadow? How or why does it transform or dissipate, specifically, I mean?
How does this relate to Dread Cthulhu and the other Great Old Ones who are beyond good and evil?

Yes, and no. The Dark Passenger in the Dexter Series, is more so the 'story' that makes up Dexter's personality, than it is about the Dexter essence. In truth, I don't think Dexter's compulsion to kill is his natural essence, but something groomed in him by his father over a number of years. Behavioral modification is multi-leveled.
I've seen the 6th season yes. I've not read the book series so I'm assessing the Dexter dynamic exclusively by the show.
The shadow person does play a role in Dexter's persona but I don't think this is what the Dark Passenger is, exactly.
The shadow man comes in, when Dexter identifies with attributes he personally holds, in others. If you've noticed through the series, he's often disappointed. He lies to himself and believes he's seeking a mentor of sorts, a kindred, but he's really trying to understand his Dark Passenger, and his attributes of personality. He's been groomed to believe that his 'monster' is the product of having witnessed his mother hacked to death, and sitting in a blood until 'Daddy' came to the rescue. The early childhood memory is flashes at best, Dexter was young enough to have forgotten about it, his brother however - was certainly old enough to be traumatized by it to later become the ice-truck killer.
As for my personal obstacles, I know exactly where it all stems from - but as I stated just because you identify it, are aware of it, it doesn't mean your muscle memory doesn't need work. The stick, then, is catching myself in the moment or having it pointed out to me. I take criticism very well, in fact I'm a product of it.

Beautifully, well put truth.Darkness itself ,and the shadow within myself is the most potent truth I have ever had to swallow. There was a time not so long ago when I was drown ding in the suffering I myself created by ignoring the darkness within. There was a hideous monster after me and for years I was convinced that he in the end would ultimately win.Coupled with vicious anxiety attacks and ignorance I sought and sought solution.Having been taught that good deeds would ultimately prevail,I was willing to loose all for a higher purpose than myself, and I did again, and again, and again. One day as i drove to work I could hear a loathsome howling coming from my very being, barely audible to my ears as though there was someone inside of me screaming in rage like a tortured dog. This thing I was terrified of,and it didn't stop,it kept confronting me."You must stand up" was the notion I received.I realized after preforming my first dedication ceremony in blood that this dark thing I was terrified of was peace personified,I began to focus all energy during times of meditation on this darkness.I wasn't sure what to call it,I had read in some literature that there exists a black flame,so i worshiped it.Now after studying The Fourth Way,and self remembering, I see that the darkness was none other than my Dark Half seeking life, and I embrace it with anticipation of who he will invite to inhabit me.

Accept the shadow, explode the buffers, and disintegrate the personality.
Accepting the shadow and objectively & seriously observing it is like putting it in daylight, there is no shadow anymore. As it is not so easy, it is done progressively.
Now about the previously hidden things you are discovering, there is all what the personality didn't want to see (And that's why it's need a real will to progress on the Work). Among them, our dark side, the contradictions betweens the different "I"s, between the essence and the personality, maybe the essence itself, and the buffers.
But in daylight the buffers are not working and are "exploding" as soap bubbles, so the frictions appear, and they are painful. Eventually this situation, pain and contradictions, is intolerable and leads to the disintegration of the personality, and of the different "I"s.
What is left is the essence with all his aspect, the memory, the experience, the centers, nothing hidden and no moral system to force and to separate the "good" and the "evil". Now these two words are loosing sense as what is good is what is strong an working fine. No separation is possible in completion.
Here an awaken man is free, beyond good and evil, as the Ancient Ones !
Now is the moment of Awakening.

I don't think identifying it is enough, in fact it may cause further negative-identification (as espoused by Ouspensky). Self-examining doesn't always mean you are willing to 'accept' the shadow, after you've taken a long hard look at it. No, there is so much more to it.
Allow me to elaborate.
I come from a dysfunctional family. When I was a child, I really felt my sanity slipping away from me because I was seemingly helpless in my situation (at the mercy of crazy adults). I read a lot, it allowed my mind to escape into other realities that were more suitable for nurturing my own psyche in a healthy way. I preferred non-fiction to fiction, and often spent many hours in the library. It was the *only* place I was allowed to go, and was only a half-block walk from my house. When I felt bored with history, science, and philosophy, I'd delve into the psychology section. Incidentally, its where I found the Satanic Bible written by Anton LaVey. As young as I was (4th grade) I think it helped me realize that I was doing something for myself and I wasn't as helpless as I'd imagined. Knowledge is in fact power, but only if its used to reign. In my case, it took a bit more than 1)identifying my situation, 2)recognizing the shadow looming over my head as a by-product of my situation. and 3)knowing something had to be done. I took it up a notch by starting with an outline of what tools I had available to me, how I could use them, and what I could use them for. A midst my toolbox was the occult, so all of this was in the spirit of creating whole worlds for me to not only rule, but be made to manifest in some manner. I kept my outline in a notebook and when I felt I was slipping a way into insanity, I would check it. And ask myself: What have I got? What can I use RIGHT NOW? What I learned, was that even in the chaos of crazy, you can create shocks and sticks. If you can not manipulate the actual reality, you can have total control over perceived reality. It took years of practice, believe me when I say it wasn't a transformation I made over night.
The bottom line for me is this: I could have become a dysfunctional child, which grew into a dysfunction adult (following family tradition). I did not. Instead, I used my power to regain autonomy over myself and my situation. This was the catalyst for my emancipation at age 16.5 and complete release from the control over my person, the rest was also up to me. From there, I knocked the frame off of any perceived limitation placed upon me, either by individuals, systems of people, or circumstance. I Worked. I continue to Work. So, if my essence seems a bit forceful and radiates from me like the yog-sothery these noobs are trying to figure out how to master themselves - this is my story. I am not the story, but my story can help others understand why my essence can not be ignored. Does it need to be reigned back from time to time? Sure, it depends on the situation. I don't allow the perceptions of others to hold me back, but I'm aware enough to recognize good advice when I hear it. Sometimes it takes a shock to make me realize I need the advice, but I'm there. I'm far from finished in my task, but any person who feels helpless and their Will in shackles; can certainly liberate themselves. I lead by example.
RISE!
