I recommend everyone give this exercise a solid attempt...it does take courage to face your darkest dreams but the act of doing so not only builds awareness in the dream world but can assist in breaking down barriers of the habitual world we call "everyday life".
For those of you that aren't experienced in lucid dreaming or some form of dream magick I suggest you do some research on the subject to tap into your latent abilities to perform such feats for in order to do this exercise you will need to be able to not only become aware that you are dreaming while in the dream-state without slipping back into this "everyday life" dream-state but also be able to control your actions and think things into your dreams.
This exercise must come with a warning however...WARNING: NOT FOR THE WEAK-WILLED OR FAINT OF HEART OR ANYONE WHO BELIEVES THAT THEIR DREAMS CAN HARM THEM (AFTER ALL "BELIEF IS REALITY").
Once you find yourself in what you would define as a nightmare, be it whatever you define as a nightmare in your own personal dream categories, your first task is to make yourself aware that it isn't real and to hold back that relentless fear of whatever it is your dreaming of. Because, let's face it, if you define this dream as a nightmare that means it scares you and it's some darkly lit deep-rooted fear manifesting itself in your dream realm. At this point, you need to just keep your wits about you and focus all your intent on just being aware of the entity or situation that your fear is manifesting itself as and try to play the observer for a minute; analyze the fear as if it was bacteria under a microscope and you were a biology major.
Try to keep it in focus but don't let it draw a reaction from you, because it's just a dream, right?...maybe, we'll see...once you have your fear in your main line of sight one of three things is going to happen and each one is an acronym for FEAR
Possibility 1. Fading Evanescent Annoying Return
One way FEAR will manifest itself is by snapping you back like a rubberband to this false state of wakefulness...it's most commonly the case for those dreamers who are inexperienced at maintaining their focus in the dream-state and for those dreamers who are too attached to the illusion of the physical world. Your dream will swim out of focus, dissipate like vapor and leave you stranded and abandoned back here in the prison known as the physical world. The mind has not been prepared fully and so it retracts back to the familiar when faced with the unknown. This does not mean that you are incapable of accomplishing this task it just means that it will take more preparation and self-discipline. Keep trying and don't get discouraged.
Possibility 2. Fast Escape Across Realms
The second way FEAR will rear its ugly head is by causing an uncontrollable sense of dread that propels you to flee away from your nightmare. If in your mind you are conditioned to believe that the horrifying image can actually cause your injury or death than that fear will cause you to irrationally think yourself running away from the nightmare. Once you find yourself cornered this will probably end with you coming back to this prison of physicality, most likely visibly shaken and drenched in sweat. You will find yourself disoriented with your immediate return to this realm, and this should be a clue that this is not the true state we are meant to exist in. Once again this turn of events does not mean you should label yourself a failure because our darkest fears are not pieces of cake to overcome. It takes a very strong will and keeping the thought at the front of your mind that what you see is not the true form of what is there.
Possibility 3. Finally Enter Awake Reality
It is my personal belief that every fear held by a human not in a state of true "wakefulness" is attached to the illusion of mortality. It is this fear itself, I believe, which prevents us from escaping this prison; this habitual position of false physicality. The lesser gods want us to keep up the illusion and continue to fear death, because it keeps us in line walking to the slaughter with all the other sheep. We are their food, and would you want your food to become aware of it's ability to escape your stomach? The Elder gods want to help us escape but the lesser ones have put certain walls up to prevent their assisting us. One of these walls is the fear wall which is directly correlated to the illusion of mortality. When these beings try to communicate with us they can only do so at our deepest levels of subconscious which is where the fears are put steadily in place. It must be fully understood right now that DEATH IS AN ILLUSION AND ITS FLAWS CAN BE EXPLOITED AND ULTIMATELY OVERCOME. So the final possibility takes place when we realize that the entity or entities coming through to us or the situation we find ourselves in in our nightmares are just illusions caused by the activation of perimeter alarms in the wall of fear. When the Old Gods make attempts to wake us up they do so at deep levels of subconsciousness and they trigger the lesser gods defenses so that we fear them and don't embrace them as our brethren. The dreamer who can overcome this fear and welcome the thing he fears into his heart will overcome it, essentially overriding the alarm system and then true communication with the Elders can take place. I have discovered this through my own experience and talking with other dreamers and comparing situations and finally overcoming the state of fear myself everytime i find myself in a "nightmare" situation I trip the alarm and discover a wealth of information through the gate of nightmares which is a very important tool that I think we all should at least attempt to utilize. Afterall we can't wake this world up until we first wake ourselves up. Thank You my fellow Cultists for taking the time to read this.
