For those who wanted a basic primer on what magic is and how to do it... here you go!
Let's use this thread to discuss magic further, particularly Viridian Sorcery which is our own collective style of manifesting willed change.

May be that could be useful to show a ritual, and to comment every step, every state of mind.
But maybe this video is enough for beginners. By my own experience, making my own experiments and researches brings me probably more than what I could be told.
Yes... knowing what you REALLY want is important. By asking something I don't really want I got "burns", ouch! I practice little with various results, but "something" always happened.
Are there some subtle difference between gnosis and awakening ?
I wish to know a little more about the particularity of Viridian Sorcery.
Now is the moment of awakening!

Again, I appreciate this.
I feel like magic involves acting like a stage hypnotist, with the target being myself.

Again, I appreciate this. I feel like magic involves acting like a stage hypnotist, with the target being myself. This is accurate. Magic is self-hypnosis. I spell it MAGIC, and have never felt a need to spell it MAGICK. People might argue that there is a clear difference between stage magic and the magic used to enact one's will. I see no real difference. On stage, you are directing the audience to see a new reality, place yourself upon the stage and at the podium and you are shaping your own reality. Ordinary man may find himself drawn to magic to force the will of another, not considering the magic he may perform upon himself. Extraordinary man is drawn to magic to shape himself, and by proxy those around him.

@ P/O/R - Not to come across as judgemental but I don't feel that you have truly grasped what magick is and labelling it as self-hypnosis is an incredibly bold statement to make.
Magick is, by definition: Creating change in the material world with the use of only ones will. Self-hypnosis or the shifting of ones' singular paradigm can be integrated within said statement but that is not a "real" explanation of said phenomena.
For the beginner of occult work, I would advise on exploring the 2 main paths of magick: the internal and the external. The internal can be illustrated within a system of chaos magick for example, under the premise that your subconscious creates reality and you are manipulating that to affect a change within your life.
The second and far more dangerous and therefore more effective is the external, whereby the use of external forces assist you in completing your set aim. The use of the Goetia or enochian language here prevail.
For all magickal practice learn: The Star Ruby and Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.
Fun will abound. Results may vary : )

An interesting and very broken description of manipulation (also, known as magic(k)). Human beings never cease to surprise me; though you are capable of some small feats, in regards to manipulation of realms and vibrations though the energy of your emotion, intellect or will; the ladder two which are vagabonds of will. Magic is the manipulation of subjective reality: the means by which you do this is irrelevant. In the end, no energy or matter is destroyed or created, only transformed. It is a basic law of the universe. Understand that most of the time, the results of manipulation are inadvertent because the user knows not what they do. As if time and space are facets of existence to be toyed with -- they work perfectly as they are! What magicians should be doing, is working to keep the balance until the Old Ones return to remake it...

@ P/O/R - Not to come across as judgemental but I don't feel that you have truly grasped what magick is and labelling it as self-hypnosis is an incredibly bold statement to make. The apologetic approach to this critique does't appeal to my pallet. 'Magic' involves altering personal reality, sense of self, and discovery of True will vs. what people seem to call 'Free Will'. Our will is never free, and anyone that believes that it is, is being foolish.
The idea that de-mystifying magic is 'bold' in the face of personal belief, and reality is intimidating isn't it? The idea that any thing I could convey here could break down the walls of your own delusions is a tell. The magic must first occur in the mind, as all things exist in the mind, in order for the subject to perceive them. In fact, you must 'imagine' yourself manifesting your will, before you ever lift a hand to force said change in the material world. It starts in your personal reality, and then this resonates outward. It certainly can be explained, and what some would call 'phenomena' are causal events. A recent example I've given is the use of though-forms to obtain something as mundane as a decent parking spot. I call to my dashboard deities, and they respond in kind with that oh so perfect spot. Is this really phenomena? Do I really need to break down the pathology here? This portion of your statement certainly supports my position. What you are calling 'internal' and 'external' is a semantics issue, much like invocation and evocation. The only real danger, is to the occultist that allows his insanity to use him, rather than him using that insanity to his benefit.
Any claim that a person can pull magic out of the sky like dancing penguins should be put to the test. In recent days I've been threatened with every form of 'black magic' under the sun, and I always respond with: BRING IT. Give me your best fucking shot. And you know what? Nothing ever happens. I'm sure you know why.

Interesting.... because I find that everyone is always trying to change me, and so that is normal among the many. It also kind of hints to why I expect people who say they are magicians and understand magic, to show me how they actually do for themselves instead of watching them trying to get others to do for them. I have been trying to inspect my expectations it's been a trip. I have really entangled myself in some hairy wasteful things. It has taken me five confusing years to figure out some of these little things that seem so basic with how you put it.
Don't worry. Be happy. Make efforts.

One clairvoyant, namely Betty Shine succeeded in doing magic; she could turn water bright blue, cut 'clouds' in the sky with mind power and predict people's future. However, she saw this as a completely natural gift and never used occult terms in what she described as 'Mind Power'. She asserted that it was mind energy that was indestructable, surviving after physical death, Clairvoyancy tends to be a rarer gift, and she attributes hers to a childhood accident where she was knocked unconscious. This triggered latent psychic powers. Her books include, 'Mind to Mind', 'Mind Waves' and 'Mind Magic'. She stressed that all powers should be used solely to heal others, as the law of Spiritual Return would come into play for those who tried to harm. Good observation. But what are you trying to point out? Awake!

Betty Shine was a British clairvoyant and healer, who wrote several books including, 'Mind to Mind', 'Mind Magic' and 'Mind Waves'(Corgi books/Bantam Press:1989-1993). She asserted that the Mind was indestructible and everlasting, surviving after physical death. Therefore, people cannot 'die'; this was her main message. She encouraged visualisation exercises to increase Mind power. Activating the IMAGINATION is the KEY to expanding our mind energy. Doing so allows us to link to 'Universal Mind'; the is the collection of past minds, strengthened with knowledge, talent and spiritual values. Tapping into this increases our intuition. We should work at building up pictures in our own mind; imagining sunsets, sandy beaches etc. She developed several exercises here. Another key concept was that of 'Universal Law'. This was a spiritual 'law of return'; it dictates that every action directed towards another person, good or bad, will eventually return to the first individual, in the fullness of time. This should discourage practitioners of 'black' magic, as there is no escaping Universal Law. Generally, it means treating thy neighbour as one would like to be treated. She stressed the importance of the animal kingdom, in that every creature is part of the Spiritual Kingdom, and has its spiritual counterpart there. Any form of killing, she stresses, is against all Spiritual laws.

I was indicating that there are different types of 'magic' practitioners about, with different philosophies. Also that all magic should be ethical, and we shouldn't harm others. Can you provide me with a practical example of *how* magic harms others? Example with a follow through result?

I'm all for harming others... if they deserve to be harmed. Magic is one of the best tools for destruction because our will is mitigated by the Great Old Ones. Most people who irritate us aren't worth the bother. However, there are always going to be a few humans who should be disposed of.

the spiritual law of return is bullshit IMO. It implies that the universe has some sought of moralistic issue with what we do. A negative action which one might take is only negative due to the perception of it being as such. These concepts originate from the idea of karma and are a hold over within the mind of a lot of people.
This type of spiritual return will only effect those whom perceive it to be effecting them. Which is to say it's completely subjective. I suspect people have a natural incline towards these ideas because it justifies their passive lack of control. It ultimately is another mechanism within the universe that keeps us asleep.
Truly karma is only the law of cause and effect and the dutiful cultist is master of such laws. We are the ones whom make this universe, we are the ones whom control these paradigms and we are the ones whom doll out karmic justice to others and ourselves. Consider that karma operates on principals of duality and the universe as whole also operates on dualistic principals. The consider duality is an illusion of the mind to help in understanding events in relationship to each other.
Karma is a part of the machine and submission to it weakness.

Implying that there is any inherent moral code which applies to magic seems kinda off to me. As for cause and effect, I don't really see how. Receiving an equal return off the magic you work sounds like a botched spell, not a fundamental rule.

The law of 'cause and effect' is the same as Spiritual return. You can't just play by your own rules.
hahaha.... please
the law of cause and effect is not the same as this notion of spiritual return. Cause and effect stands as a mundane understanding about the mechanics of basic particle groupings. The law of spiritual return is something you've been told about and just decided to start believing in. You probably feel you've seen evidence of it but the fact is that it's completely subjective.
There are no black and white magicians there are only magicians. There is no law or moral code beyond what we decide and create for ourselves. If you're constantly trying to attack or drive people away with magic then of course there will be repercussions, that is not a cosmic code of morals that is cause and effect.
You say "of course there is a moral code" then I ask what evidence is there for this objective universal moral disposition?

In Betty Shine's writings, which I was referring to, she simply says, "There is a universal law that dictates that whatever we give out will be returned in full, often many times over. I have also been taught that love unites, hate destroys." (Mind to Mind). Ex Satanist Doreen Irvine, in her book 'Set Free to serve Christ', described how a girl's innocuous visit to a hypnotist resulted in depression, irritability and a change in personality. Only after confronting evil influences around this girl, was she freed of this affliction. Also, simple dabbling with magical paraphernalia like ouija boards can lead to upset and fear by the practitioners, when death threats are spelt out through the planchette. Such do-it-yourself Spirituality kits can be harmful, opening doors to rogue spirit activity which are difficult to shut.
Perhaps I need to clarify my question.
Can you provide me with a specific example, in which 'magic' has harmed a person, and the effects of said harm?
These generalized ideas referred to are just paying lip-service to the possibilities in psychology. I am looking for a specific example. Have you personally witnessed magic doing harm?
