In my mind, magik is simply realizing that nothing exists, and therefore everything is malleable. It is utilizing this principle while not thinking about affecting "reality" (which does not exist) which is so hard.
I don't know if this makes any sense to anyone else...often I find it difficult to share my views as they are usually paradoxical, and make no sense when given a voice, but they work for me.
For example, some people talk of Ascension; the trick is not to leave everything behind and evolve, it is to simply realize that there IS nothing TO leave behind.

It seems a powerful paradigm. Skepticism is bullet proof. Neither black magic can affect it. But it can be dangerous sometimes.

everyone's posted great answers.
i especially liked the newcomer's response, evilcheesewhiz.
i think it's fair to say that 'nothing exists'... nothing of substance anyways. we exist in what i call: Lesser Reality, a place which tries to hinder our Awakening, ascension, becoming, evolution, progress... whatever one wants to call it.
however, there is a small fragment of Greater Reality within us which comes from the Black Essence Outside!
perhaps this is what creates the paradox? in any case higher knowledge, gnosis seems paradoxical when mixed with ordinary logic/reason. in Quantum Physics, how can superposition, entanglement, and non-locality be true? multiple dimensions? or something we can't even begin to understand...?

To create magick is to impose your will upon reality. When you are able to bring about change through the power of thought alone then you are practicing magick. It can not be taught. It can not be learned. And coming into your magickal abilities is generally besought with the feeling of madness.

I'm gonna give the smart-ass answer, coz all the points I would have made otherwise have been raised already Magick is whatever you choose believe it to be, just like anything else!

Personally, I only use one kind of magick... the kind that works! (That, of course, being anything that my energies feel like utilizing the pathways of at the time.) After all, ceremony, traditions, and religion in general are all only a "programming language" for the human flow of essence. A computer will run Windows, DOS, Linux, etc. It's all designed to work around what the user is comfortable with and can understand. Same with magick. I have been known to practice Wicca, Asatru, Voodoun, necromancy, shamanism, as well as assisting in ceremonies ranging from Christian to Satanist, Hindu to Kabbalist, and of course straight up energy work, just as much as I practice my magick using Mythos terminology and deities. Perhaps if there is a place to post pictures, I may share a picture of my altar to the mighty lord Cthulhu, which is one of five separate permanent altars in my home. Good answer Chaoticum, I have always liked the OS analogy.. Personally, I have to admit that I have my preferences though_ I guess you could say I'm happy using different distros, but would stick to Linux, (or Unix at a pinch), and stay the Hell away from Bill Gates... or at least the paradigmal equivalents of this

In my opinion, trying to define magic is like trying to define art. What counts as art? Art encompasses all forms of, well, anything. Hunting is an art, rock climbing is an art, writing is an art.
With magic, the same thing applies. Magic overlaps and incorporates so many other things such as psychology, science, fate theory, and psychic ability that it's hard to say what's magic and what isn't.
Whenever I do magic I always notice a lot of change and synchronicity. In my opinion, magic is therefore the art of manipulating the threads of reality and fate, however, the universe is using you just as much as you're using it. Magic has a mind of it's own.

yes, rather than finding a consensus, i think the goal is to share our individual magical definitions with each other.
like art, no one is right or wrong... it's all a matter of opinion.

Interesting magical definitions:
"....there is nothing supernatural about occult science; it is merely a branch of knowledge that has not been generally taken up, and which has this peculiarity, that its professors do not hasten to publish their results." ---Dion Fortune, "The Scented Poppies", The Secrets of Dr. Taverner
"...MAGICK is merely to be and to do. I should add: 'to suffer.' For Magick is the verb; and it is part of the Training to use the passive voice. This is, however, a matter of Intuition rather than of Magick in its ordinary sense. It is not my fault if being is suffering, and doing is desperate!" ---Aleister Crowley, MITAP (xxii-xxiii)

VSI agree. I think it is all a matter of perspective. No one ritual ever comes out the same for everyone, because we aren't all the same person. What we get out of majick is what each person is capable of putting into it.
